Hark! It is I, Scary Kitty, Guardian of Fandom Timelines! Returned from battle with the dreaded pre-Thanksgiving hordes!

Not, of course, replacing her -- FH would never forgive me if I suggested otherwise -- but you know what I mean.

Judging from S4-5 being John's dark period, I'm inclined to say no. Then again, I doubt he would've talked to a shrink much, anyways.
Yeah, he does have those problems with talking about his feelings. Just ask Teyla.

Sparky is on screen. Therefore, it is canon. Elizabeth is still out there. And John WILL bring her home.

I knew I forgot to comment on something. It was about replacing Kate. The Legacy books do have a new psychologist, and she is suddenly John's BFF. Now how OOC is that? But from what I hear, the departure from canon in those books is epic.

Now if a bunch of people tell you (yes, I'm looking at you MentallyUnstableFox) that your fic was good and that you should write more, and if they are people who also write good fics, then you know you are good. But if you really want an honest opinion, you have to ask a respected writer and/or beta in private to give you advice. Nobody wants to hurt a writer's feelings or discourage them from enjoying fandom, so all of us tend to be very very tactful with new writers.

I like the way Fox cautiously asked for reviews and didn't have an unrealistic ego about her abilities. We were all happy to welcome her to the Sparky writing community.
You are entitled to your opinion.

But i still think we should praise new writers like Mentally unstable fox for their courage in being able to post their fics in a place like this thread.

I agree that not everyone is talented to write, but i think everyone should give it a try if they are willing to do so. We need to start somewhere, and even if we might not be good at first, i think with the reviews from others we might end up improving the little beginners mistakes. But i do have to recognise that some writers are really talented, where others are not! Not everyone is able to write a good fic.

I agree that sometimes it is hard to review properly when you are trying not to hurt someone. I mean i am terrible with reviews, i hardly ever give them, i rather comment what i am feeling while reading a fic than actually write a review, i admit that i am not good at reviewing.

So what you are saying is that only other writers should review fics?

By the way, may i ask what you think about those who only have ideas and aren't good at writing them, you think it is acceptable to give the ideas to other writers, or not really?

So he actually says things that don't make sense to the show? That's funny, LOL!

No! I now have to decide between Sateda and Princess Bride in an hour... The world shall meet its end.
I would be nervous too, that's why i think you are awesome because you actually had the courage to do so, i admire that!

I have the same feeling, Southern Red!

I already do, Brie! Now even when i hear it in another shows, i can't stand it! And yes, it is so unpleasant to hear it on the early seasons of SGA, after knowing what we know now, i know exactly what you mean.

          Look what I found on the Online Urban Dictionary;

          5. Sparky
Nickname for the pairing (ship) John Sheppard/Elizabeth Weir in Stargate Atlantis.
suppously named after the sparks between them

          'I wrote a Sparky fic'
          'I made a Sparky icon'
'This episode was full of Sparky moments'

Sure it's wrong on how Sparky was named Sparky but it made me chuckle when I saw it.

Not self proclaimed, but duly elected by the SGA-R planning committee. LOL It was due to the fact that I taught writing and English and copyedit for people in RL. The SGA-R writers and I have been around the "comma needed" and "no comma needed" circle a number of times. Yet they still haven't learned. I just can't help breaking out the red pen of doom sometimes.

And also, I have a bit of knowledge of US military matters due to my Marine, Mr. SR, and a herd of military friends.
Oh, I try. I really do. But I fail. I hate commas. *hangs head*

But I love her Red Pen of Doom (henceforth referred to the SRRPoD. She makes me look so grammatically stunning after the beatdown. Even if she likes to attack my power punctuation--the dash.

I think somehow you missed my point because I said exactly what you are saying. I said that everyone should try writing fanfic. I said people sometimes don't give honest reviews because they are reluctant to hurt someone's feelings. And I complemented MentallyUnstableFox profusely for being brave to put her fic on the thread and for being a good writer. What did I say that you disagree with?

If you get a good review, with or without constructive criticism from someone that you know is a good writer, that should tell you your writing is also good. But, of course, anyone is welcome to review fics. I said that perhaps it is better if feedback is given in private, rather than on a public forum. Like the beta process, it works better not to do all the back and forth of editing in public. And of course it is acceptable to give your ideas to others. We do that here all the time. Everything goes in fanfic writing. There are no rules except to be polite, tactful and respectful.

That's why the red pen of doom only comes out in emails, never here. *waves to Eri*

This is the first part of a larger story that I began many months ago, when I was just venturing into the world of fanfiction. It is actually not completed - my plan was to have four or five separate parts/chapters, and I only have the first and last parts written. As for the middle parts, I have a general sense of the plotline, but I'm struggling on how to write it, as creative writing is not my forte at all.

I do have a couple of specific questions that I'd like to ask, but for now, I would really appreciate any feedback I can get from you guys. I accept both praise and criticism and also any tips on how I can improve my writing. Since I have never done creative writing before, my first attempt in writing fanfiction is a series of missing scenes from "The Return, Part 1." This is supposed to be a team fic, though I plan on throwing in bits of Sparky here and there. Everything follows canon, and I've tried to make up for my lack of creativity by nailing characterizations.

So... please read. I hope you guys enjoy what I have so far, and I would greatly appreciate any comments and/or suggestions you guys have.

My current working title is simply "Missing Scenes: 3.10 The Return, Part 1."

                  Spoiler:
John stepped out of the Gate with Rodney and Carson beside him and nodded his head at the general waiting for them at the end of the ramp.

“General O’Neill.” John shook his hand.

“Colonel Sheppard, Doctor McKay, Doctor Beckett.” General O’Neill acknowledged each of the men in turn. “Welcome back to Earth.”

“You’ll understand, sir, when I say that Earth is the last place in the universe that we want to be in now,” John replied dryly. “I would say last place on Earth, but...”

General O’Neill gave him a wry smile. “Ah, is Doctor Weir still on the other side?” he asked.

John turned his head and looked around him, only noticing just then that Elizabeth wasn’t with them. “Um... yeah, she should be coming through any minute now...” John said hesitantly, puzzled. He frowned. “Funny, she should have been with us.”

Seconds later, the event horizon rippled as one more figure emerged from the Gate. Elizabeth made her way down the ramp, a silver Atlantis briefcase in one hand.

“General O’Neill.” Elizabeth smiled and shook his hand. “It’s good to see you.”

“Good to see you, too, Doctor,” General O’Neill replied. “Is that everyone?”

Elizabeth hesitated for a moment before responding. “Yeah. Everyone’s through.”

General O’Neill nodded before glancing up to the control room, signaling to the technician there to shut down the Gate. As the wormhole disengaged, he turned back to the foursome.

“Uh, there’s breakfast in the commissary, if you guys didn’t eat already before leaving,” he quickly mentioned.

Elizabeth smiled. “Thank you, Jack. We’d best head over to the infirmary first, though, and get ourselves checked over.”

General O’Neill nodded, and with a final glance at the team, he walked away.

“Well, I don’t know about you guys,” Rodney piped up, “but dinner seems like ages ago, so let’s get this check-up out and over with, shall we?” With that, he headed off to the infirmary with Carson close behind. John was about to follow them, but he stopped and turned around when he realized that Elizabeth was still standing at the end of ramp, gazing at the closed Stargate.

“Elizabeth? You coming?” John studied her, wondering if she heard him at all, and he was about call her again when she turned around.

“Yeah. I’m coming.” She forced a smile. “Let’s go.”

She brushed past John, and after a brief moment of hesitation, followed her to the infirmary.

The four of them filled their plates from the buffet and found a table near the corner of the commissary. John tried to keep the discussion alive, and with Rodney and Carson joining in, the meal wasn’t awkwardly eaten in silence. However, John noticed that Elizabeth was unusually quiet during the entire meal. Back on Atlantis, she only ate with them occasionally, but when she did, she was usually very active in the conversation. That morning, though, her attention was completely focused on her plate as she half-heartedly picked at her scrambled eggs and hash browns, not seeming to have much of an appetite. John caught her more than once staring off into the distance, though he didn’t know what she was staring at. It then occurred to him that there were no windows or balconies here at the SGC that led to the outside world. And even if there were, there was no ocean.

There were no briefings or meetings to attend that morning, as General O’Neill and Mr. Woolsey had already debriefed the SGC and IOA on the situation in Atlantis days before. Within the hour, the team had finished their breakfast, and Elizabeth and Rodney had arranged for taxis to come pick them up: Elizabeth’s to her apartment block, and Rodney’s to the airport, where he had to catch a flight to Nevada. John and Carson accompanied them up to the surface to see them off, and Rodney’s ride arrived all too soon.

“Well, I guess this is it, then.” Rodney shifted on his feet uncomfortably as the driver loaded what bags he had into the trunk.

“Yeah,” John replied. Silence fell over the four.

“Just so we’re clear, this isn’t goodbye forever, right?” Rodney quickly asked. “Because I’d hate to think that after all we’ve been through together in the past two years -- ”

“We’ll keep in touch,” John interrupted.

                  Rodney stopped. “Right,” he said.

“Rodney.” Elizabeth paused for a moment before continuing. “It’s -- it’s been wonderful, having you our team,” she finally managed to say.

Rodney gave a small nod, then looked at Carson, who just sorrowfully smiled at him.

The taxi was waiting. Seeing that there was no more that he could say, Rodney settled himself into the taxi and shut the door. His friends watched as the taxi left and drove off into the distance.

They waited in a heavy silence for Elizabeth’s ride to arrive. When another taxi pulled over to the curb a few minutes later, Elizabeth sighed deeply.

“Hey, at least you’re still staying in town,” John said, trying to be optimistic. “And you can always come by just to visit, seeing as how your apartment is only twenty minutes away from here. It doesn’t have to be work-related.”

Elizabeth gave him a small smile but didn’t respond.

“You know, this feels so weird,” John suddenly said. Elizabeth arched an eyebrow, prompting him to continue. “Being back on Earth, I mean,” John explained, “and going our separate ways. Soon, it’s just going to feel like the last two years never happened.”

Elizabeth flinched at those last words, and John cursed himself. Good one, John! Remind her of the time she was infected with nanites just as you say goodbye.

“Sorry,” he quickly apologized, and Carson reached out and patted her on the shoulder.

Without another word, Elizabeth climbed into the taxi. She didn’t look back as it left in the opposite direction Rodney’s had gone.

John let out a heavy sigh. “You think she’ll be ok?” he asked Carson.

Carson, too, gave a sigh of resignation. “I don’t know,” he admitted, a hint of worry in his reply. “I’m sure that given some time, she’ll be all right. But this has certainly hit her the hardest.”

John just nodded, not responding, and the two men stood together in a heavy silence.

“Come on,” Carson finally said after a long moment. “We’d best get back.” Reluctantly, John trudged after Carson back to the SGC, not looking back at the point down the road where the taxi had already vanished from their view.
I liked it! I always like the fics who will show us certain scenes we didn't see in the show, after "fixing fics", these ones are my favourite. But anyway, i would like to know when you will be showing us the continuation of this one. I look forward for it!

                  Spoiler:
Oh and if you mentioned "You guys" a lot of times, like i think SR mentioned, i didn't notice, i only remember it being said once.

Oh and yes, i can see Elizabeth's behaviour before my eyes while reading this one. You capture her reaction quite well.
And i can so see this small scene there too, i can even almost hear them here:
“Just so we’re clear, this isn’t goodbye forever, right?” Rodney quickly asked. “Because I’d hate to think that after all we’ve been through together in the past two years -- ”

“We’ll keep in touch,” John interrupted.

                  Rodney stopped. “Right,” he said.

Keep up with the good writing!

I agree. And i believe that maybe the writers of the show needed to consult Kate as well, since their ideas were mostly nonsense, they were definitely in need of serious counselling!

It seemed they were only able to achieve the characters true potential only when they were about to kill them. It was really quite disappointing.

The trauma of losing Elizabeth, teh events of "Doppelganger", more Elizabeth trauma, Teyla's kidnapping ... it would seem irresponsible of TPTW (RL or show) to not provide a replacement for Kate. Not, of course, replacing her -- FH would never forgive me if I suggested otherwise -- but you know what I mean.

You did? I could understand you complemented Mentally Unstable Fox, but i probably misunderstood you there, when you were actually encouraging people to write. I am not sure now, but i guess the fact you mentioned that first writers should ask for advice from beta and other writers first, made me understand that you were probably saying they shouldn't publish their fics before being reviewed by other betas or writers first.

That's kind of weird, cause the thing is, I always considered John to be Kate's most difficult patient (next to Ronon I imagine). So, on that notion, I would dare to guess they weren't BFF's.

Yes, encouraging new writers to explore their ability to write is never a bad thing, but they shouldn't be afraid to go and ask for help. Even the best have beta's to help them with their stories.

Look at SGA-R -> in my opinion it has some of the best writers employed in the fandom (and I'm not saying this because I'm biased - it's the truth) but they still rely on the help of betas who check for spelling errors, grammatical errors, continuity, characterization, storytelling, fact checking...

Plotbunnies are constantly given up for adoption. There's even a thread in the fanfic-section here where you can give bunnies away.

Good luck! However, chances are I either wrote it myself or I read it already. I'm not sure about the AO3-archive, but I've read them all on ff.net, and on the het-rec communities on LJ as well, the femslash communities too...

There's a good reason why I mentioned it - it's rare and it will only get worse.
