I did want to say, however...thanks for letting me come here and hang out with all of you... I’ve had a blast and made some wonderful friends and its been great being able to have a group of people with which to share our shipper highs and lows and frustrations and joys, pics and fics and vids and captions and dissection every shippy scene and wearing of those magical rose-colored shippy glasses that allow us to see ship even where others might not! Its funny you should think about this song this way. I heard this song a thousand times over the summer because the girls that work for me at the waterpark loved the song. And every time I heard it, it always made me think of Sam & Jack!

I like your distinction of hiding feelings v. repressing them, and I think you're right about the differences between Jack and Sam on this count. I guess I wouldn't consider Sam oblivious, though...but perhaps it's just cuz I take a different view of the examples you mention. In Affinity, I don't think she was being obtuse...or insensitive...I honestly think she was giving Jack a chance to step in and stop her...to see if he still cared anything for her at all, because I still think she was convinced that he no longer felt about her the way he had when they made their confessions back in D&C.

As for the catalyst that changed Jack's mind...well, I'm probably way off here, but I can't help notice that the last thing Sam says before Kerry interrupts them is "if I don't tell you now, I may never...." I think that word "never" is key...cuz if there's anything that would linger in Jack's thoughts it's the image "never" creates. Suddenly a future without Sam in it looks very bleak indeed. It's a huge dose of reality when he considers the ramifications of her leaving his life that way. Realizing this, IMHO, is where he makes his decision. And the opposite of "never" is "always"...which, of course, comes a few scenes later. Thankfully!

As for suffering...I think they both did...very much...in different ways. Which is why we have the Cavern of Angst, after all!

I definitely agree with this. It's a commonly used plot device in television and movies: Woman is unsure if the man she really cares for returns her feelings, so she starts a relationship with someone else. When guy2 wants to make the relationship more serious, woman realizes she still has feelings for guy1. However, she's still not sure where she stands with him, so she approaches him and gives him what is in her mind the perfect opportunity to step up and say something, and guy1 says nothing. Woman thinks this means he doesn't care and moves on with guy2. Meanwhile, guy1 is now sure that woman doesn't care, because she couldn't be involved with another man if she did. (Slight variation: guy1 is bitter that woman has moved on when they both know there's something between them.)

The problem with this is that most honorable guys won't say something if they think the woman is happy. They're not gonna purposely break up her relationship. And in most cases, would a woman want a man who would try to break up her relationship? No. So the whole reasoning on the woman's part is... not quite rational.

As for what changed his mind, I think you're right on. I also think that maybe, just maybe, the fact that she was showing doubts about her relationship with Pete made him think that maybe, just maybe Pete wasn't making her as happy as he, Jack could.

Yes, you are probably right about that. But it's still the same- she heard rumors. Otherwise how would she know specifically about the Air Force- there are a lot of things that could be the problem. She happened to know the right one.

Or it could just be that she was incredibly astute. She saw them together and instantly realized she'd walked in on a personal conversation, so she's no slouch in the intuition department. It wouldn't take much thinking to realize there's only one reason two people who've known each other for 8 years would never have gotten together if they wanted to. (My grammar there was absolutely mangled, but please tell me you got what I was trying to say...)

I actually was looking for a short thing to write after the last two novellas I wrote, so that might be a fun one. Because I really think Jack did blow it. Like APA said about Threads- it could have been the end of the line for them. That's the only time I have ever actually been mad at Jack. (Well, that and the end of the Season 3 Episode which shall not be named.)

I'll second the motion for you to write this fic. It'd be a great what-if story.

And I'll also second your comment on Amy's story! Please keep going.

I hope you're including yourself in that, since I didn't even get that until you pointed it out.

I had fun watching 2010 this afternoon. Oh, the Angst!! I picked up a lot that I hadn't on the first run, so it was pretty awesome.

The whole cabin scene is full of angst, from the moment she throws out her comment about "this being the place you were always threatening to drag me to." Without doing it consciously, she added the personal element to the conversation. Jack wanted to take Sam to the cabin... not Carter. The thing is, after 10 years, he's convinced himself that he doesn't love her anymore. He's got this mask on, he's not just hiding his feelings (as someone pointed out earlier), he's in complete denial. He's angry, but he's convinced himself that his anger is related to everyone ignoring what he said, not because she ignored what he said, because she married someone else.

That changes when she tells him that she can't have children anymore. There's a flash of emotion on his face, it's the old Jack, the one who more than anything wanted to keep Sam from being hurt. In that moment he realizes that he still loves her... and that makes him even bitterer. Even after all the ways she betrayed him, he still loves her, still hurts with her.

Despite himself though, he can't help but asking her what will happen if they succeed in sending the message back, if they make the last ten years never happen. They both know he's asking one thing: if our opinions on the Aschen hadn't driven us apart, would things have been different between us? She can't tell him what he wants to hear.

This is when he gets really mean, and I just figured out why. She's asking him to change the past with no guarantee that it'll mean changing the thing that hurt him the most. Remember what he said to Malaki in WoO? He couldn't go back and watch Charlie die again, as much as he wanted to see him one more time. Now here's Sam asking him to go back and watch her get married to another man all over again. He'd just gotten to a point where he could convince himself that he didn't care anymore, and she's asking him to relive it all over again. No wonder he got angry! Yes, he does prefer things the way they are right now--because he's put himself in a place where no one can ever hurt him again. She's asking him to give that power up, to give it back to her when she already abused it once.

Of course, we all know that he changes his mind... so what kind of thinking did he do off camera, after she left him?

I just had my second day at my new job... it's intense! Yesterday was orientation and a Whakatau (an official welcome with the existing employees singing at us and giving speeches in Maori, Samoan and English ). Today was the first day of training... woah. After 2 weeks of intense training, 2 weeks of coaching and then another 3 months of being a noob with ongoing assessments, I will be a fully trained quitline adviser and help people with their efforts to quit smoking permanently. We spent some time on the floor observing the phone calls and chatting to the quitline advisers (my twin sister is in the 3 month noob stage).

I'm so tired. I think I'm going to love working here... everyone is awesome! And the training isn't just manuals and power point presentations either, it rocks! When we split into teams for exercises it does get a bit competitive (read: violent) though I have a skinned elbow, a deep scratch up the other arm from a table corner and carpet burn on my knees. I also seem to have pulled something in my back when I slammed into a wall as my body was twisting (we had to race across the room to hit a metal buzzer, which we broke). I think my team won that one... I hope we did.

It's awesome having a proper adult job

And not really on topic here, but I have to share it with the family! Along with Spacegirlnz and my twin sister, I managed to get one of the last 3 tickets to have dinner with Teryl in April! Only 8 tickets were available so it will be cozy We are waiting to hear if Amanda_Tapping_Fan managed to get her booking in on time

i never used to like it, i'm not one for Ballards until i went driving with my friend who loves them and she wouldn't let me chagne the song so now i love it. I think it suits them cus they are so far apart but they are so together, Although Sam's not in New York and Jack doesn't play a guitar

I have to say that I have loved this chatter about poets names...we had a dog called Major and 2 fish called Malakai and Teal'c.
Hubby's cuz from down south has a dog called Bra'tac...they were gonna name him Teal'c but found it too hard to call out...and I tried it and I have to agree...Teal'c isn't easy...even though it seems so!!
My dad's chihuahua is called Sam...but it's a boy...they used to have another dog called Jack but he's up in puppy heaven...you'd be surprised how many people have Jack's and Sam's as pets names!!
If I should get a cat I'd name it Schrodinger...or Moggy!!
I have to admit however that Thor and Martouf are kinda growing on me!!!

Funny thing is the first time I heard it was when someone made a Sam Carter vid with that song...it was taken off YT when YT did that whole clean up of all the MGM stuff...you remember when they did that?? That was ages ago...anyway...that was the first time I heard that song...and I fell in love with it there and then...and not just because it was a Sam Carter vid but rather coz it's just a great song!!

We spent some time on the floor observing the phone calls and chatting to the quitline advisers (my twin sister is in the 3 month noob stage).
I'm so tired. I think I'm going to love working here... everyone is awesome! And the training isn't just manuals and power point presentations either, it rocks! When we split into teams for exercises it does get a bit competitive (read: violent) though I have a skinned elbow, a deep scratch up the other arm from a table corner and carpet burn on my knees. I also seem to have pulled something in my back when I slammed into a wall as my body was twisting (we had to race across the room to hit a metal buzzer, which we broke). I think my team won that one... I hope we did.

Your training sounds most bizarre!! I hope the actual job is a lot safer than that...in my job, I get zatted daily...and sometimes the zats are so bad you can actually see the blue flash of the static electricity...and boy does it smack you.

Good morning Ship Family! Lots of good discussion on the Kerry situation last night! Makes a nice read while waiting for kids to get ready for school.

IMO, Kerry is one smart lady. Well, she'd have to be to be heading up an investigation about the trust. I think with a combination of whispers she might have heard at the SGC (really, I think there must have been an airman or two that would make sure to say something where she would overhear) plus what she saw on the porch at Jack's. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
