But the great part about Sam disobeying regulations by going through that gate with Orlin - that's something I've always liked seeing in her character. On the one hand, she's so above board; so keen and upstanding an officer (give she's been a General's daughter and a straight 'A' student throughout all her academia, that's not surprising) but to see those rare moments when she's goes completely against all protocol to do something she believes is right, I think those have always been empowering moments for her character. Much as when she followed Jack and the rest of SG-1 through the Stargate to save Earth, despite the fact that the Pentagon was about to shut down the entire Gate program. Wow, loved that too.
Disobeying orders; or more to the point, figuring out that there are bigger issues than always obeying them has been a part of Sam's "growing up" process, I think. Both as an officer and as a person. A lot of catalysts came into play, Jack's irreverant influence for one, but also the fact that I think it's always been inside of her to be a rebel - she's just been supressing it so long and hard - it makes her character a lot more layered to think there's something of a "Starbuck" hidden inside of her somewhere. Itching to get out and wreak havoc on the 'system'. Ha. Sorry for the BSG analogy, but I figured it was the best picture I could draw for the moment!
Anyway I'm rambling again. But Sam has precious few visible flaws on the surface of her character, and I like peeling her apart for that reason. She's a fun onion.
Mineeeeeeeee!
