SLR is Single Lens Reflex - the more professional style of camera with interchangeable lenses etc instead of what are called "compact" cameras where the lense etc is built in. SLR's are much more "manual" (in that you can alter the settings in lots of different ways and have much more control over how the resulting photograph appears) whereas compacts are often referred to as "point and click" because they are mostly automatic and you don't need to (or even can't) alter the settings. Compacts are designed more for fun, candid photography whereas SLRs are more for professional or artistic photography.
Compact camera:
compact cameras are also known as PHS cameras (PHS for "push here, stupid")
I love SLRs as you can set the appeture, shutter speed, etc. Ah, sigh, but at $2K, cough cough, don't think so!
