however, this release will be test. it's a jacked up price but if it doesn't sell, it's an indicator that the market isn't in the US for ongoing Who.
BBC themselves said it that they're only releasing it in the US to try and offset illegal downloading or copying and shipping of video from countries that have it to countries that don't.
Personally, I think the the mention of being in negotiation with SCIFI or anybody else to carry Who is a smoke screen and all they're doing is trying to recoup losses from not having the show in the US market for initial broadcast and downloading.
Hopefully I'm wrong on that, but I've heard nothing since the release of the Eccleston run to indicate that any US carrier is really interested in Who. Even PBS, the longtime carrier didn't want to pick it up.Comment

The only thing this all shows was that the BBC has absolutely no understanding of the US market. They could have gotten Doctor Who onto a US network like Sci-Fi by offering a bargain price for series 1, subject to renegotiation if it did well. They could have created a backdoor market with the DVD release, if they hit that magic $45 "blind buy" price. They chose not to. They like to come up with one pricing the shop to all markets equally, which to my mind is just flat out lazy.
