Star Trek beamed to International Space Station

Insert your own "boldly going" and "where no one has gone before" joke here: Paramount beamed a copy of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek to NASA's Mission Control in Houston, which then uplinked the movie to the International Space Station, where astronaut Michael Barrat and two crewmates will watch it while orbiting 220 miles above Earth

President Barack Obama Praises J.J. Abrams Star Trek Movie

In a 30-minute interview aboard Air Force One en route from Washington to Phoenix last Wednesday, U.S. President Barack Obama talked with NEWSWEEK's Jon Meacham about Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, Pakistan, Dick Cheney - and J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie. Here is an excerpt of the extensive interview.

And the last movie you saw?

Now, movies I've been doing OK [with] because it turns out we got this nice theater on the ground floor of my house ... So Star Trek, we saw this weekend, which I thought was good. Everybody was saying I was Spock, so I figured I should check it out and-[the president makes the Vulcan salute with his hand].

        Very good.

        Yes, absolutely.

Did you watch that when you were growing up?

I used to love Star Trek. You know, Star Trek was ahead of its time. There was a whole-the special effects weren't real good, but the storylines were always evocative, you know, there was a little commentary and a little pop philosophy for a 10-year-old to absorb.

Angels may also have had its wings clipped slightly by J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, which dropped a slim 46% in its second weekend—presumably thanks to good word of mouth about the well-reviewed film. A $43 million weekend haul means that the space saga has already reaped $147.6 million, making it the year's fourth highest-grossing movie after just eleven days in theaters.

Roberto Orci on Writing Star Trek, Fans and Star Wars Influence

Was it daunting to try to write a script to please all hardcore Star Trek fans, or did you just go into the project wanting to write a movie that all people would enjoy?

There have been 40 years of people investing and learning about Star Trek and I didn't want to disrespect that or pretend that it never happened. So in a way the movie is both a sequel from Spock's point of view and for new fans it's an imagination of how these classic characters come back.

You and Kurtzman have both admitted to being huge Star Wars fans. How did the Star Wars saga influence your writing for Star Trek?

A New Hope is very much like an origins story. But we also looked at Superman, Godfather II and other movies that took their time to set up a character before he sets off on a journey. Doing that for Kirk and Spock was a way to introduce them. But we were also after just the way Star Wars made us feel as kids. We were more in search of a feeling than perhaps any specific archetype; that feeling of momentum and inevitability of something.

Fifth place belonged to the stalwart Star Trek which continues to earn despite already being in theaters for a month. The J.J. Abrams-directed movie has now crossed the $200 million mark -- dropping only 44% this frame, it proves it's still got more earning power left.

Meanwhile, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian took fourth place with $14.6 million, a solid 40% drop for a $127.3 three-week total. Star Trek continued its fantastic run, dropping just 33% with $8.4 million for fifth place and $222 million overall. Sam Raimi's horror-fest disappointed again, dropping 54% for a 7th place finish of $7.3 mil, bringing in $28.5 million in two weeks. And Angels & Demons -- which slipped to 8th with $6.5 million in U.S. box office for a $116 million stateside total -- broke past $400 million in global earnings, making it the highest grossing film worldwide for 2009.

Its interesting to see that, while being the highest grossing film of 2009 so far in the US, its not the highest internationally of 2009 so far.

it may be cooling off but the film did remarkably better then anyone expected. it's budget IIRC was 150 million. so it's already surpassed that and more
