    That's as an adjective... *ahem*

I suppose even if Carson was the epitome of Gentlemenness, spending time with influences such as the rather Hetero Sheppard; he's bound to pick up a few mannerism and ways; the fist bump is just one of them.

I rolled my eyes at that one and instantly knew it was a bad episode.

Ah... so here is your assumption that all those who don't act in a specific manner regarding women are infact pre-pubescents who have never had sex or a long term girlfriend? Correct?

News flash. Not the case. Sure some people act like that, I quite agree. But I, and some other people I know, do not. I wouldn't have batted an eye lid if it had been McKay instead of Beckett, though it does demonstrate a lack of respect on behalf of Shep as he's military, I'm realistic enough to know that in the forces, that, and WORSE occurs. I've had to put up with colleagues of mine making such comments about women who are on the squadron, some quite derogatory, it happens. Sure.

BUT WE DONT ALL DO IT. And I just simply found it out of character for Beckett, who despite the fact he OBVIOUSLY likes girls, I did not imagine to be the kid of guy who'd do that.

Why is that such a problem for you?

I'll be a little more clear.

The fist bump was horribly out of character for both Shep and Beckett. It's all been said on here already but the reason it's out of character is because they're both professionals and the bump was clearly related to the all female team. Like a 'Way-hay, we're in there. Phwaaaarrr!" About as inappropriate as it gets in today's equal opportunities world. Shep might as well have gone up to them and honked out the Atlantis theme while squeezing their boobs while Beckett laughed in the background before slapping John a big high 10 and a 'Hoo-ya!'.

It was a poor decision on the part of whoever came up with it. But the reason it doesn't seem out of place is, as I mentioned earlier, the whole episode is filled with poor decisions. AND the episode made a point of the all female team by having the camera lingering on them at the start of the episode.

You can try and work the bump into Shep and Becketts' characters but you're clutching at straws, my friends.

I found the fist bump (or Respek Knuckles if you're an adult swim watcher) a little perplexing, practically. I knew it meant that someone was going to get their flirt on, presumably Carson, and that made me roll my eyes. And they didn't disappoint--all that Carson/Porter flirting was the part of the story I found most horrifying.

I guess it implied that they were lucky to be hanging out with a bunch of hot, military chicks? Was it their chance for some one on one time to maybe find a hookup? Would they have had the same reaction if only 2 of them were hot, military women? I don't know, because it was a perplexing thing for them to do. Way to objectify and sexualize your colleagues. I mean what did they care? Sheppard can't even get with them because of his position. But I guess he can look at them and appreciate their assets, right? That doesn't sound like Sheppard or Carson to me.

But it was ultimately harmless and made for a laugh. I can't get too upset about that in the grand scheme of things.

Some of you have said it was sexist. I must ask how so?

Sexism is treating people of the opposite sex differently that those of you own. At no point did I see Sheppard or Beckett treating any member of the female team as if they were incapable of performing their jobs.

If you consider showing your admiration of beautiful women privately to another gentleman by means of a playful fist bump sexist, then you the person in question have a serious problem distinguishing a a compliment from a sexist action and I pity any person who may suffer from your misjudgement

Well, by your own definition, they kind of did act in a sexist manner. You don't have to discriminate or treat as inferior although that definitely counts. You simply treat someone, according to dictionary.com, with "attitudes or behaviors based on traditional stereotypes of sexual roles." Even if it's just treating the opposite sex differently than your own, then that's what they did. They wouldn't have done that for an all male team. They did it specifically because they were women who I guess they considered attractive.

Personally, I wasn't necessarily offended. I just thought it was silly and inappropriate.

And who knows Beckett's character better than the actor who plays him?

I thought it was funny, and it was just the two of them joking around, there was no indication they were planning on chatting them up (well beckett did but that was while getting to know Porter) but to me it was a bit of playful joking on behalf of them, it also helped to show how it was a laid back escort mission

Women are different to men. Clearly.

And if Sheppard and Carson were both gay; and they came across an attractive male team and bumped fists; would that have been sexist? (Possibly hypocritically so, but still, it can happen).

I'm not sure sexist is the right word. I think childish possibly, but not sexist.

Yeah, I agree with you there. But there's nothing wrong with being childish; Sheppard's character occasionally acts , in a sense of the word, childishly. This is just another example of that; only with Carson picking it up from Sheppard's infectious personality too; which one does around friends and colleges.

Well it depends on the level, like I said, a lot of my male colleagues are really degrading to the females on my squadron and it's just not on, they'd do a similar thing. It's not sexist, but they ARE objectifying their female colleagues. And sometimes, depending on the level, it's just plain rude.

I really wouldn't have minded in this scene if it wasn't Beckett, and that's just because I thought he was a lot more... mild mannered? If that makes sense, a Scottish gentleman.

I suppose some of Sheppard's mannerism have rubbed off on Carson; if you're exposed; either voluntarily or otherwise to people like Sheppard; you're bound to be altered to become more like them; especially after 3~5 years of being with them.
