I love this show. The actor that play Dyson and Anna Silk have great chemistry. Kenzi is even starting to grow on me. I am ecstatic to have a nice adult show to watch.

            A Review of Lost Girl

I powered through season two this weekend. Lost Girl is no masterwork, but it's superior to the tweenie fantasy crap churned out today (Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, et. al.). Lost Girl delivers a fantasy world without feeling like a children's story. If you're thinking of watching but aren't sure, here's a breif description:

The fae (supernatural) world exists under the radar of human society. It includes a diverse set of creatures, with new kinds occasionally introduced to us. An uneasy peace exists between a light (roughly good) and dark (mostly bad) faction of the fae. The politics within the light faction, where we spend most of our time, are themselves complex.

The protagonist, Bo, is a succubus who was an orphan raised by humans and knew nothing of the fae until the series begins. In traditional mythologies, a succubus is a demon that kills its victims. In Lost Girl, a succubus is just one of the many naturally occurring creatures that humans would label "supernatural." In the Lost Girl fae-verse, a succubus needs the sexual chi/energy of others to thrive, but killing is a matter of choice rather than necessity (so long as the succubus is in control of her powers). Bo, raised as a human, doesn't want to hurt anyone.

Now that Bo and the fae PTB are aware of each other, Bo is pressured to choose a side. Independents aren't permitted, but Bo doesn't want to swear allegiance to anyone. She just wants to live her life, protect her friends, and remain true to her self and her values. Because she's powerful and because both sides want her, she's given time to decide.

Those are the circumstances in which the stories take place. Bo is a lone, undeclared fae with a human best friend. Together, they hang a shingle as private eyes for the fae community. Bo can travel through both light and dark territory, mingling with both sides. She and her friend, Kenzie, are uniquely suited to resolving politically tricky cases.

There's much more. Bo befriends a couple of light-fae homicide detectives (of course). There's an enigmatic little bartender who is much greater than he appears to be, and who mentors Bo. A doctor fae-specialist has her own mysterious back-story. There are questions about Bo's lineage and what other (non-succubus) powers she may have inherited.

Lost Girl's comedic moments are frequent but don't undermine the drama's integrity. It's a drama with a sense of humor.

            Potential negatives, for some people:
            • Kenzie, a hyperactive motor mouth, was irritating to me for a while, but she mellows some in season two, possibly because of adjustments in writing and direction. She even becomes occasionally charming.
            • I've read complaints about the sex, but folks, the main character is a succubus. Don't watch this show if casual sex is an issue for you. With that said, no naughty bits are shown. Side-boob is as risqué as this show gets. On the porno-meter, Lost Girl is somewhere between broadcast television and Showtime/HBO.
            • Production values. Don't expect a feature film's visual effects, or even anything approaching Game of Thrones. Lost Girl is about the story-telling, not the eye candy. When they do include special or visual effects, however, those effects are generally satisfyingly done. Also, the budget for effects in season two appears to have increased.

The series begins weakly, IMO, but it soon weaves a tapestry that grows richer and more complex with each episode. Lost Girl finds its stride well before the first season ends. If you enjoy fantasy, then Lost Girl is a safe bet. And since the first season is only thirteen episodes, you needn't risk a large amount of time.

Season two is twenty-two episodes, and IMHO it's better than season one. The latter part of the season follows a story arc in which the survival of all fae is threatened. Bo is a key to defeating the threat, but she must do so by harnessing her considerable dormant powers without going "darkside" because of them. You'll see some Tolkien-esque paralells here.

Season three has already been commissioned. I'll be there when it arrives.

I am a fan of the show. There are some episodes which tend to drop below the bar, but but even SG-1 had episodes like "Seth".

The show is very well cast, both in the main cast as well as the recurring characters.

              regards,
              G.

Mmm, yeah. It's weird. That thread is supposedly just a news item announcing a SyFy pickup, but it has more posts then this one with its wider topic of all news/discussion/speculation.

The second season is better than the first but it seriously had it's share of preoblems. The writing was sloppy and uncoridianted to put it gently. The show taught me to keep my standards pretty low and try to appreciate the series for being fun.
"First Weir, then Samantha Carter, and now, you! It's a pity you humans die or get reassigned so easily, or I might have a sense of satisfaction now!"

*You got the touch! You got the poweeeeer!*

                    "Arise, Woolseyus Prime."

                    "Elizabeth..."

I guess only those in Canada saw the premier show, An Evening at the Clubhouse, before the first episode of the fourth series. It was interesting. I've always maintained that one of the things this show has going for it is the chemistry of the cast. Last year they had a preview show, too. The difference between the two was interesting. This year, it seemed as if Trick was mostly on the outside looking in whereas last year, he was one of the group.

Of course I have no idea of what's going on, but I'm betting that Trick's role or his future in the show will change somehow in the 4th series. Also, they introduced Anna Silk's new baby. Her being pregnant last year impacted her role in the show and not in a good way, IMO. It appears as if the character Hale will be back in the mix a bit more this year, too.

Without being spoilery, the first 3 episodes are pretty much typical Lost Girl. In fact, if you watched the 3rd series, then you know that Bo really is a Lost Girl.

My only complaint with this show is that after the first series, they really play to what the audience wants to see, to a fault. Everybody loves Kenzie and her fast talking vibe so they just build it in, even when it doesn't really fit. Long time viewers probably pick up on it, heck, it's pretty hard not to!

Regardless, I'm happy to see it back. I don't know if it's been given a full season order or not, but hopefully it will be. I'm not sure yet exactly what the big bad is going to be this year, but I remain optimistic it will be entertaining. Guess SyFy will start airing it in the US in January.
