Maybe their intintion was to explore that very fact?

If indeed they plan to explore a bad relationship and why it fails, then yes, I'll agree with their intent if it's revealed as such. Chloe has already done two fairly big trust betrayals already, and hasn't learned much. If they were on Earth, I'd hazard Scott would have left her by now; but they are on the ship, where there isn't as many fish in the sea. Odds are he knows that, if he leaves Chloe with everyone knowing that he left James, he won't be getting any for as long as he's on the ship.

Well, maybe from Park (and it looks like he's recently learned that Park puts out to almost any marine).
