we do not know if the Church scene was a flashback or a hallucination. also, it was said the girl was 16 or 17, not he himself

Whether a memory or hallucination, it is implied that Scott's mistake and then him leaving the church is what let the priest down and drove him to drink. Hence, he was 16 as well.

aww that scene in the church was so good. BJS is such a good actor, to be able to portray that scene so wonderfully. other actors can slip up when dealing with religious instances in their characters, but Brian has embraced it in his. well done!
