Sam's life takes a turn in an unexpected direction when she's faced with an unplanned pregnancy. The decision to keep the baby and raise it on her own will alter her life forever. Relationships are put to the test, especially the one between her and Jack. She doesn't know what to expect from him and he surprises her at every turn.

You go to "Manage Stories" and click on "For Love of the Game". No one was there who was not military or in some way briefed on the program. You can't know about the program without being tokd it's history of how it came about which means Jack, Sam, Daniel and Teal'c being main features in any briefing.
And even if he had not been in command or retired, being on the #1 flagship team, having been the first person thru the gate (a la Neil Armstrong), turning Earth's enemy's #1 general into an ally, saving the planet numerous times - I would think that not knowing who he is would be the equivalent of anyone affiliated with Starfleet not knowing who Capt.
