My whole family are weird. Even by my standards.

You contemplated a lot more than that! You took one look at him and started asking questions like 'Is he married?' and 'But is he happily married?'

And you were soooooo disappointed that he didn't take his shirt off

I cannot deny any of that. For one crazy weekend I was in love. I nearly asked him whether he could confirm or deny the rumour I heard in the dealer's room about his penchant for shirt removal but I just forgot to stick my hand up. Plus I didn't want to look like a desperate mad woman in a room full of people asking mostly sensible questions.

Ah, but you were only thinking what a lot of others were thinking but weren't brave enough to ask

And I will never be able to hear the word 'Zombie' again without thinking of Dan

Well whaddyknow - Britain actually has a politician with a brain!

Yes folks, Nick Clegg has shown some intelligence - he's put a stop to the government's ridiculous plan to allow a higher ratio of children to minders because he's figured out that not only wood that not reduce the cost of childcare for the parents, but it wood reduce the quality and safety aspects of said childcare. Yay!

Don't know why I bother trying to sleep. Coughing so much it is almost impossible!

However, Jumble, I'm glad to hear that there is still some intelligent life still among the politicians (no matter how limited!)

We will see the extent of intelligence among politicians in Texas. The legislature has passed a bill unanimously in both houses, to allow a few high-performing school districts to opt-out of the incessant state-mandated testing and develop their own diagnostics. Now we shall see how much the governor is under the thumb of the multi-billion dollar testing industry if he vetoes it.

Have you been to see your doctor? A cough like that might bear a little investigation

That's not fair - but then, neither is the SATS system we have here

I saw that and did a little cheer. Clegg has earned back some of the respect I lost for him of late. It was an obviously flawed scheme. If they want to reduce the cost of childcare, they need to subsidise it more (and not just for people claiming tax credits - for everyone) and they need to make it more available and flexible. Moreover, they need to start accepting that, actually, it's ok for a mum (or a dad) to stay at home and actually raise their child, rather than this incessant pressure to be a working parent. I am very lucky to be in a position where I can - just about - afford to not work. I would love to work a few hours a week but in order to make it financially viable I really can only afford to go full time. I don't want to go full time because I don't need to but I'd be worse off working part time. If childcare were cheaper and more flexible then I'd be able to work the hours I want to work.

Oh we have something (sort of) similar in the UK with Academy status schools and free schools. Actually allowing schools to teach children the way they want to appears to be a new concept to most.

I'll second that Laurie. No point suffering if you don't have to. You've been poorly several days now; if you're not getting any better then I would see a doctor. *huggles*

Yep, we've won that one But there are other aspects of the Childcare Reform that still have to be dealt with - for example, making it mandatory for nurseries to only employ people with X amount of GCSE's or NVQs will mean fewer people will be qualified on those counts and those that are will expect more money, thereby forcing the nurseries to charge more

As for flexibility, Childminders are very flexible and only charge for the hours they work with each child, whereas nurseries charge either a full day or half day regardless of whether each child attends for fewer hours. Staying even 15 minutes past the specific half day hours means parents have to pay for the full day They also charge for 51 weeks of the year, regardless of attendance.

All parents are entitled to have £243 per month paid tax-free for childcare, but there are many employers that simply don't apply this tax-relief - totally wrong! Child Tax Credits have reduced the childcare subsidy from 80% to 70%, which puts further strain on lower paid families and often means that it's just not worth parents going out to work no matter how much they want to

Just got back from seeing my doctor - he's been my doctor for over 10 years and until today I never knew what the 'M' initial was for....... but today I noticed he has a new name plaque on his door and yes, you've guessed it, his name is Martin!

So I got the results of all those tests I did last week.....

                      (spoilered for boringness)

                      Spoiler:
The results show that I definitely have Rheumatoid Arthritis, which was no surprise. They've also identified two alien antibodies in my blood that are attacking my healthy cells. One has the RA marker, but the other is so far unidentified. So I have to go see a Rheumatic Specialist to see what's going on and what can be done about it, if anything It'll probably take about a month to get an appointment, so in the meantime it's more drugs and just being careful.

                      Fun, huh?

He's probably having his casual racism removed at last.

Ah seriously, no it's not great at that age but I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

Good - and bad - news on the test front, Jumble. Knowing what it is gives you some place to start but it's probably not making you feel wonderful right now. I hope the appointment comes through quickly though; nothing worse than waiting for these things. Glad the doc's name gave you a little smile. I have no idea what my GP's first name is... probably "Liability" now I think about it.

Oh he is. Utterly utterly gorgeous and very charming. I got an extra pic from him because he mucked about in the first one (but actually I loved that one the most). He was very funny and entertaining in the talks. I did contemplate changing my Woohoo name to "The Other-Dan Loving Woohoo" at one point.
                                I totally understand that!

I'll second that notion that you should get checked out llp. I'm off to the doctor myself tomorrow to confirm if I have pneumonia or not.
