my point was, write lt/captain vega....and don't worry about that pesky gender stuff

time will tell if they will do that or if the focus of her character will be her gender

      About that...

      Spoiler:
Vega leads her own team, so she will not be joining Shep's. Rachel had her baby waaay back in October, so she should be ready for work.

Nope. They like them busty characters

Ford has so much potential but TPTB have made it clear. Mallozzi even said that blowing up on the hive ship was pretty much 'closure'. But the end of The Hive seemed to leave the door open. But again Ford aint got no boobs

Alicia Vega is a sexier name (imo)

No, that was why Keller got boosted to regular and we didn't get Carson back full-time. TPTB should've never offed Weir. Or at least been charitable and ask Torri to come back full-time. Thier loss

Oh great. So it seems she's replacing Lorne now! This cannot be happening! Carson, Elizabeth, Kate, not possibly Lorne now! I always thought Lorne led the secondary team, I could be wrong but as this character steps up it seems Lorne will have to take a step down.

            from Joe's blog
Jason writes: “Will the new Captain Vega character take away screen time from Major Lorne..?”

Answer: No. The introduction of the Vega character had nothing to do with lessening the onscreen presence of any existing characters (regulars or recurring) and everything to do with a genuine desire to expand our roster of familiar faces.

Unfortunately, as is proven by Ronon, having the character is still not enough to concentrate about the character. And the way in which Ronon is written really emphasises it - he's also written mainly for his assets (only in this case, shooting, kicking, beating up and, erm, more shooting) - and physical assets, i.e armporn. Much like the SG1 guys' sleeveless shirts in season 7.

Huh, adn I actually liked Ford, because of his geeky unmuscular approach to things in season 1. I liked season 2's Super!Ford much much less (er, not at all...).
Pinky, are you thinking what I'm thinking?

i agree, it isn't just females that fall 'victim' to stereotyping. ronon is a lot like Teal'c in that he's 'silent alien muscle'

It just irks a bit more because, ratio wise, there are so few female characters, thus so few chances to have something approaching a real female on teh show, to then see that opportunity to write someone/something a bit more real and have it wasted time and time again.

I had no issue with ford, i kinda catagorize him like i do Lorne...one of the better characters of the show simply because they AREN'T a focus. they're not forced into the hewo role, or the geeky scientist role, or the silent muscle role, thus they are allowed to be people first and roles second

will they treat vega like Lorne and allow her to simply be or is she there to even out the male/female ratio since - now that sam is gone - we only have two token female characters.

i'm cynical, i'm sure there was a honest desire to add mor background characters, however i'm sure that the decision to make Vega Alica and not Allen was made with the fact in mind that a female character left and was replaced by a male, thus they need to add a female to avoid some of the crit about 'manning' the show. (and how can joe toy with that ship that he likes to tease people with if he only has two females (keller and teyla) to six males (carson, rodney, shep, lorne, ronon, zelenka)?

gotta avoid that slash don't ya know

Nah, tbh I think introducing "Alicia Vega" is a halfarsed attempt at having an "ethnic" character on the show.

a female ethnic, two birds with one stone

or maybe actually having a non-white that ISN'T an alien

Well it looks like she's pretty hot, so I wouldn't get my hopes up for her not being portrayed as a sex symbol. She's also been on Atlantis before.

IIRC it is said that she doesn't get a team at first and actually asks why she's there or something like that. She could very easily be a JQ, but then stay on as a regular after Teyla is found

Bit of a chip on your shoulder, eh?

And JDS, if the only thing she's good for is a sex symbol as you say she will be, why weren't her breasts falling out of her shirt the first time she showed up?

Massive cleavage is not a prerequisite for sex-symbol status.

*agrees* It does have its similarities, I suppose, with the "all blacks are Jaffa" situation in SG1. Sigh.
Thing is, the writers are stil capable of writing a proper female cahracter, IMO, even the quality has dropped horribly since Carter's "golden years" on SG1 (for me, seasons 3-6 mainly). Just liek there was a period they wrote a proper part for Teal'c (5-8), ebfore taking it all away from hkm again and returning him to the Silent Alien Muscle. I have to admit that all through Midway - and Ark of Truth, too - I kept on feeling Teal'c's out of character. Hwe was in character, I suppose, for Teal'c of season 1 or 2. But it's like they went and ignored all the character development he reached in later years. But they did write him properly once, just like they did Carter or Weir or still do male characters that aren't meant to be 100% heroes 100% of the time like Rodney.
But back to Vega and writing proepr characters, I'm getting the feeling frmo the snippets used for the character's introduction this isn't going to happen. It sounds like the stereotypical "woman in military" situation.

I had no issue with ford, i kinda catagorize him like i do Lorne...one of the better characters of the show simply because they AREN'T a focus. they're not forced into the hewo role, or the geeky scientist role, or the silent muscle role, thus they are allowed to be people first and roles second
Once again, agreed. I'm also thinking of the ironic way the role of Carson changed between season 1 and 2...
Pinky, are you thinking what I'm thinking?
