    You're welcome.
I tell you Teal'c, hockey is the coolest game on Earth!

Did you not say it is played on ice, O'Neill?

We just discovered the other week that the family made a major boob during the funerals of both Grandad and Grandma. Had anyone realised at the time, someone from the RNZAF could have attended and spoken about their service during WWII, what their medals etc meant, and had The Last Post played. It didn't occur to anyone at the time unfortunately, but it was discovered ex post facto at the funeral of one of their mutual friends.

      My reaction. Meh.

I have actually never watched the original movie and won't see the new one either. *shrugs*

Actually, my main reaction is to question why Hollywood can't think of any original ideas anymore?
It's because everything has happened before, and will happen again.

Ugh, I am really really trying to get the next episode done. This one was going to be my baby, but I have zero motivation to work on it thanks to the SGA muses going AWOL and RL stuff distracting me. And I'm afraid if I just try to force it out, it's gonna be crap and darnit, Elizabeth deserves better than that. Believe me, I'm just as frustrated as you all are.

I'm sorry you missed out on that. Over here the specific branch of service (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines) will send a detail to do a graveside service. The funeral director set it all up for us. The Army sent a group of soldiers who played Taps, folded the flag that was on his casket and presented it to my son with a little speech of thanks for my Dad's service "from a grateful nation." If you're not in tears by that point, you will be before it's over. I remember following the hearse on the way to the cemetery through the small town I grew up in. You could clearly see the flag-draped casket in the back. All along the way, people stopped in their yards, took their hats off and put their hands over their hearts. If he were still alive, my dad would be 96 this year. So many of our WWII vets are gone, with thousands dying every day. Only the youngest who served are still with us now.

That sounds like a really beautiful moment. And yes, we're losing so much every time we lose one of our WWII vets. There's so much history slipping away that future generations won't know.

I saw an on the street interview recently in which a number of young people on a college campus didn't know who Adolf Hitler was. That's only the tip of the iceberg, I'm afraid.

That's just shocking. And yet the cynic in me is completely unsurprised.

                Spoiler:

                Title: Aquarius
                Rating: G
                Characters/Pairing: Kate Heightmeyer/John Sheppard
                Words: 323

John tiptoed into the room, trying his very best to stay as quiet as possible. He’d left his combat boots at the door, having only just returned from a three-day mission, just in time for her birthday. He didn’t want her to think he’d forgotten second year in a row. Not this year.

She was still asleep, sprawled across the bed. It was a surprise she didn’t kick him out the way she always moved around in her sleep. The more room she had, the more she obviously made good use of it. He watched her sleep for a few minutes longer, taking the time to drop his things as quietly as possible.

When she stirred, he sat down on the edge of their bed, leaning towards her. She woke to the dipping of the bed, and smiled a sleepy smile when she saw him.

                “You’re back?”

“Surprise,” he grinned. “And happy birthday!”

He held a little box out to her, which she took from him. She sat up a little, leaning against the pillows, carefully opening her present. Inside was a small, round silver pendant, wavy lines edged into it.

                “Aquarius, right?”

“Yes,” she replied, admiring the pendant. “Thank you.”

John leaned even more forward, “So what do I get for not forgetting your birthday?”

“Well,” she started, putting the box and pendant aside, “I imagine Teyla threatened you with a can of whoop-ass if you were to forget... again.”

“Her exact words are best not repeated,” he winced at the memory when Teyla had explained to him in great and painful detail what she would do to him if he were to forget Kate’s birthday again.

“But since you haven’t, let me remind you what happens when you don’t forget.”

She pulled him down, and kissed him full on, and somewhere in his subconscious brain a permanent reminder was being placed on her birthday. He wasn’t going to forget, ever again.

                    Challenge #35

I am drawing a line in the sand.....or rather the art......actually.....YOU are drawing the line! For this week, in your artwork, draw a vertical line in your artwork, dividing it. It can be straight down the middle, cutting it in half equally, or maybe off to one side or the other. You can do one piece of art and just draw a line through it, or do separate artwork on each side of the line. You decide......it must just contain a vertical line. The 'line" can be a brush, or any color line, or whatever.........

If you are doing fan fic, your story must contain two 'pickup lines'.

Entries are due to me by noon your time Monday June 16.

Wow, there has been some awesome artwork in the past two weeks... always amazed at what people manage to do.

                        **//**

Concerning young folk not knowing about what happened in our past, I'm not surprised they don't know their history anymore. They generally don't care about it either... My cousin is a History/Dutch teacher, and I have to say I'm thoroughly ashamed when I see the textbooks they use in class when it concerns History.

Our history is primarily European history, with large chunks of Middle-Eastern civilizations. So, that's Egypt, Greece, Rome, medieval, industrial revolution, and a side dish of American history. Although, a small bit of American history when I mostly remember our teacher pulling her hair when she tried to explain the presidential elections and most of the class was like "Say what now?" ... so we re-enacted one such election instead. That was fun.

Anyhow, it's not just our young folk who don't know anymore. Two years ago, a friend and I visited the Westhoek (more commonly known as Flander's Fields) and we would attend The Last Post underneath the Menin Gate at Ypres. When my coworkers asked me what I was going to do on my trip, I mentioned this and that we were going to visit the In Flander's Fields museum, and a lot of the Commonwealth cemeteries and the German one near Passendale. One of them gave me this blank stare and asked me what that was The Last Post... I nearly fell off my chair out of utter shock.

So, it's not just here then. I don't know if that's sad or reassuring. And don't get me started on History books. Any recent ones I've seen have made me shudder. There are more ways to get information than ever with all the cable channels and so forth, yet young people are less informed than ever. But I'm willing to bet they can name all the Kardasians and know who Honey Boo Boo is. I may hurl.
