7 Do I have to pay to see Sanctuary?

The first four webisodes will be available free of charge. We will be charging for viewing subsequent shows that will be available as individual purchases or bundled

I don't think it is off at all...I mean I think it is ok that we have to pay for it. I mean it would be the same as if we would rent a dvd or buy a dvd eh...I mean it is a totally different concept.
I mean it is like buying music online...yes you also have to pay for it. And I don't mind it at all...
I mean if you watch it on TV you also pay for it, not directly, but you have to pay the company that aires it so...now you just go directly.

But when I click on "watch now" on the sanctuary site I just get a blank black screen with no sign that anything's happening. As long as I can download it and play it, I'm happy, but I do remain confused.

Thanks for the tip about checking the add/remove files area/ Flash 9 with Active-X is listed but has no file size. At all. Not even zero. Nanda. <sigh>

        The site says it's downloaded...

Do you have Norton Internet Security suse? Because that has been the problem for many people. If you do, disable it for 5 mins then go to watch the file.

Nope. We pay for shows normally, either directly for cable/subscription TV or through advertising for free to air TV. So long as the price is reasonable (I'm using a season pass to SG-1 on iTunes as a rough equivalent) I'll gladly pay upfront for a high quality download. The way I figure it is, that I'd eventually be buying a DVD if I like the series so I'd rather pay up front directly to the people making the show and enjoy the show probably a year (or 2 or 3) before it would have gotten to TV here in Aus.

As for paying for the show, it sounds like we'd be in effect buying a copy if we download it. Is that correct? In that case I don't mind paying.

That is correct. Once you buy it, you can do with it what you like (within reason of course). Play it on any device you desire, burn it to DVD, etc. Just no reposting online.

So it would like buying a dvd eh...what is cool

I like the concept about that actually. And also the fact that we first can see if we like it or not...and then if we do we can buy it

I also have no problem paying for Sanctuary as Eve said we would pay in one way or another anyway and the more people that buy the webisodes, the more popular Sanctuary becomes the more "seasons" we'll see hopefully by paying we show support to the "show" in a practical way too and its great that everyone can see it at the same time

yeah, i just hope its not too much! i'll probably end up forking out the money anyways 'cos i'm desperate to see the show!!! he he! i'm not really fussed about paying for it, its just that i'm not used to paying to watch stuff on the internet, lol. i'm gonna have to buy a new computer or delete come files tho cos i dont think the downloads will fit on my computer!

Anyone wanna take a guess at how much we think it'll be per webisode??? (i'll start saving up now! he he!)

It's a great idea, and I hope it will be released on DVD, I really can't afford to buy it twice and buying over the internet is too problematic- not enough hard drive space, my moniter sucks, etc. Hopefully the DVD release won't be too delayed, because I would like to support this project.

If we don't pay for it, then how are they going to afford to make new episodes? Unfortunately, making a series like this doesn't come cheaply. If Sanctuary is anything like Stargate SG-1, it will cost approximately two million dollars an episode and the money has to come somewhere. So, either we are charged a small fee per view/season or they flood the show with advertising, which I personally would rather do without. It's actually one of the perks I find rather appealing about Sanctuary. However, they may be able to find unique ways to advertise products in order to lessen the costs eventually. Say like in one scene, we might see Ashley drinking a can of diet Pepsi, or all the computers in Helen's office will be Dell. Who knows. Maybe they will eventually set up the site where you can watch the show for free, but then you have to watch paid advertisements throughout the episode or you can pay per episode/season and just download the episode/stream the episode without any commercials. I'm sure everyone at Sanctuary is looking at every angle possible to distribute the show in the most cost effective way so as to keep their new viewers happy.

I think I've heard people say that ITunes is like 1.99 per episode, or you can buy a season pass (which probably gives you a cheaper per episode cost) I know that either Dan or Damien said that they would be offering season passes. Each episode of Sanctuary will consist of 4 webisodes, at least for the pilot, which will be 8 webisodes total (a 2 hour pilot). The first hour of the pilot will be free.

I'm willing to pay. I'd rather pay the artist than the cable company or unknown advertisers. I would even consider donating a bit for them to be able to continue perfecting their show (like we'll need to with millions of interested customers hehe). Not that I have that much to donate, but I believe in the cast and crew and the idea of direct- to -customer media.

Sounds crazy, I know, but I like the entire team. I like paying artists (including the hard-working profit-sharing crew!!) directly for their work. I am grateful for their hard work and creativity. I believe the final Sanctuary product will be excellent because those behind the product strive for excellence.

Just like I support the local childrens' theater, my daughters' dance group, etc... I like being a part of creative stuff.

No advertisers means the ad execs/ market analysts/ Neilsen numbers are not interpreting who I am and what I like - I pay the artist directly for the product, the artist gets feedback directly from the customer, and we all live happily ever after (and there are no commercials).

Even cooler, as fans, we may get to participate a little in the creative process!

If we like it, the show is funded and continues - YAY!!

I think if you blend fan participation, a great show, online innovation - voilê, the perfect entertainment storm.

                              I'm totally excited!

Words have tremendous power. The right words spoken by the right people at the right times can lift up communities, transform lives, mend relationships, break hearts—even topple empires.
