X-Men Origins Inspired by Source Material

Comic book fans are highly critical of comic book-inspired movies, so how will X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE stack up? Director Gavin Hood backs his film by referencing two of the most popular Wolverine stories in Marvel Comics history.

Gavin Hood, director of the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie from 20th Century Fox, was aware of the criticism aimed at him by fans, so he used two of the most acclaimed stories in Marvel Comics' Wolverine mythos for inspiration. In a recent interview with Wizard magazine, Hood director said:

"The two [comics] that most inform our movie are the Origin story and the Weapon X [story]. But I think we [could have spent] and entire movie just on that first Origin series, so I think that it would be fair to say that our movie's inspired by those two series rather than absolutely true to them."

When dealing with a character that has lived an exceedingly long life, the healthy use of flashback sequences is essential. When asked what criteria was used to select the important moments in Wolverine's development, Hood said:

"We needed to move [Wolverine] through from about 1860 when he's born as James Howlett through the late '70s, early '80s, when our story principally takes place. So it's certainly not an endless "Logan Through Time" story by no means. We had a story set in the not too distant past...so the bulk of our story...happens between him and his brother and Striker. But we do meet him in the roginal moment of getting his claws, which I thought was exciting."

Producer denies Wolverine rumors, talks about leak

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner denied to SCI FI Wire Internet rumors that her husband, Superman director Richard Donner, assumed the director's chair from Gavin Hood during production on the upcoming prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine, though he helped out.

Shuler Donner also talked about the March 31 leak of an unfinished workprint of the movie online and other matters during an exclusive telephone interview last week. Wolverine opens on May 1. The following are edited excerpts from the interview.

I hope you are going to watch it to the cinema, too
I don´t know, but to watch an unfinished product seems very wrong to me. But it´s me I´ll wait
I saw a clip from Wolverine in Jay Leno yesterday and it was so great. I can´t wait to see it on the opening weekend next week.

Remember that leaked workprint of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which Fox maintained was an early version of the movie? Ain't It Cool News is reporting that the leaked version is in fact identical to the final release version of the movie, sans finished visual effects and other technical tweaks: "It's obvious that Fox is trying their darndest to keep this news from getting out, because it will eliminate most of the motivation for people who have seen the workprint to pay for a ticket."

I am not a part of "let´s hate Fox" club but I expected this. The only person, who I would believe saying this, is Hugh Jackman and he said nothing about it. He said the leaked version is as "a ferrari without painting" which is actually "movie without CGI and original score".
So I am really not that suprised and I think Rothman obviously has no idea about movies they are doing.
And I don´t think this hurt the movie too much. People who saw the workprint and didn´t like it, will ignore the finished version anyway. And those who liked it, will go to see it with finished effects.
I can´t imagine how it must feel - it´s like to watch two completely different movies cos music is doing A LOT.
And there is one lesson in this - never watch workprint. I mean, I love movies and watch a stolen version of an unfinished movie...I just couldn´t do that.
