Soooo, just to show how far off base you can go when using a tut, I present my own short attention span workings.

I started with this wonderful tut that I'd been wanting to try:

I was asked by a few people to create a tutorial for this piece that I made:

Now, I am not good at tutorials, so PLEASE ask if you have any questions!! I will be more than happy to explain further, or point you in the direction of help. So, I re-made the banner and wrote down everything that I did. The result was slightly different, but I was excited that it came out as close as it did.

Program I Use: Photoshop CS4 (but it is translatable to earlier versions)

It is long and has a few images, but I made the images really low quality, so you shouldn't have a problem loading them.

Spoiler:

1. Create New Project (File > New) Dimensions: 160x690

2. Insert these images: One Two Three (File > Place) and resize

3. Select any one of the images and duplicate it (Ctr+J) With the duplicated image selected, go to Filter > Other > High Pass. Set the radius to 0.3px - OK - Change blending mode to Overlay. Select both layers (using Ctr) and got to Layers>Merge Layers - Do this for all three images.

4. Choose a dark color (like from Helen's jacket - #2a0815 - or John's jacket - #181528 - in the middle image). Change background to this color.

5. Download this action and apply it to the project (make sure that all the images get below the changes)

6. Apply Layer Mask to each image and use this set of brushes to soften the edges. If you have Elements, you do not have to option to do Layer Masks. However, you can still download the brushes and use them as an eraser to soften the edges. For the two outside images, I used cloud brush #887 @ 100px and for the middle larger image I used the name brush, but @ 200px.

7. Create a new layer beneath the images yet on top of the background. Using the same cloud brush, use the colors on the edges of the images to choose colors and blend them into the background.

8. Create a new layer on top of the images yet below the action. Using the same brush choose a lighter color and add some highlights that go around and over the images a little.

9. Change the opacity of the two outside images so that the focus is on the middle image (Opacity 50% - if you have the option, I also changed the Fill to 70%)

Of course, you can apply your own text. I used Jane Austen and Decker for fonts.

I stopped here until I can figure out what to do for text....again. (Yes, knowing when to stop futzing with something is a problem.)


I guess these could be challenge entries although they don't explain why I fangurl Amanda/Helen/Sam other than because she's gorgeous inside and out.

I've tried figuring out why I like SGA so much, and it comes back to several things. So, because I did nothing today but sit in front of my computer, here's my first two entries into the Why I Love Stargate: Atlantis.





(These were also made for another challenge o the Carson Beckett thread of a totally different website. The challenge stated that we could only use one pic of Carson, no matter how many times we duplicated it.)

Do not advert Sil out of vidding!!!! She's basically my only source of vids atm!!!!!!!
Which doesn't mean you can't do both Sil!!!! Cause I very much like what you made especially since you don't make lots of stuff in PS. Keep at it!

Why I Love...Angst! I love creating an angsty feel with my artwork, this sig is one of my faves. I've got loads with dark, grungy textures (which I also love ), but this one is more subtle. *angsty sigh*

I never know when to stop tweaking. I have gone back to siggys I made months or even years ago and still try and tweak. I end up with about 6 different versions of sigs sometimes because I can't stop tweaking.

I like where your tweaking went! Pretty sigs.

I felt like that too! I have a brand new sig to prove it!



And for the record, I am proud to say that it is the first sig I've made completly with PS. I've had it for the past six months or so, but when you've been using another editing software for the last 5 years, change is hard. So, while I started using PS, I was hopping between my old software and PS. This week, because of this thread, I decided to take the plunge and understand it once and for all. And I love my new sig, so I can't wait to learn more.

It could be an entry to this week's challenge, but I hadn't read about the challenge when I did it, so I don't know if it counts. (It could probably, but I want to do something else! Hehe! Or I could just submit it along with anything I create this week.)
