Stargate Universe's premiere episode, 'Air', charts the arrival of the humans on Destiny. Their journey is precipitated by an attack on the secret base they are using to investigate the problem of how to dial a special gate address. Fortunately that problem is solved in the nick of time by a science team comprised of the obsessive Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle) and video game geek Eli Wallace (David Blue). When the base's stargate is identified as the only viable means of escape, Rush decides to dial the mysterious address rather than another stargate on Earth. The survivors from the base race through without knowing where they will emerge. On the other side they find that they have avoided death at the hands of their alien attackers only to face the probability of asphyxiation (hence, the episode title) due to Destiny’s failing life support systems.

Stargate Universe' travels to dark side // PHOTOS and VIDEO

      EXCERPT:
The suspense is tangible in part because none of these are established characters in a longterm series; anyone could die at any time (and in the first few hours, several of them do). Effects are above average, sets are impressive, and the acting is solid.

          THE PROVINCE
          THE FULL STARGATE

By Glen Schaefer Fri, Sep 25 2009

EXCERPT: Robert Carlyle turns down the distorted guitar rock blaring from a stereo in his trailer and drops his wiry frame on a couch.

The Scots actor who’s played everything from dancing steel worker (The Full Monty) to Bond villain (The World is Not Enough) to Hitler (The Rise of Evil) says he’s taking his most out-there career turn yet on the Vancouver set of the new science fiction series Stargate Universe, this day filming epsiode 18 of 20.

“I was very flattered when they came to me, but it seeemed kind of left field for me,” says Carlyle of his first meeting with Brad Wright and Rob Cooper, the Canadian writer-producers responsible for the sci-fi franchise that includes 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 and five of Stargate: Atlantis.

            THE PROVINCE
            Light-years from home

By Glen Schaefer Fri, Sep 25 2009

Ming-na and Louis Ferriera are in a tense stare-down in front of the cameras on Stargate Universe’s Victorian-inspired spaceship set.

It’s an argument between Ming-na’s human resources officer and Ferreira’s army colonel over some aspect of life for 80 people stranded on an alien craft a gazillion light-years from home. The director calls “cut,” the tension melts and Ming-na lets out a huge guffaw. It seems the effects gadget that shoots spooky steam through the corridor was leaking just behind her head.

“We have the most dedicated cast members, I think because many of us are theatre trained,” she says. “Usually when something goes haywire or there’s a bump or or a noise, one or the other actor will break out of the moment. But this cast, we almost challenge each other to see who can stay focussed. This scene was pretty intense between me and Louis, but it sounded like five people were peeing behind us. We just eye-balled each other until I walked off and them I let it go.”

              Close shave for Lou

By Glen Schaefer Fri, Sep 25 2009

Lou Diamond Phillips is keeping military hours this day on the Stargate Universe set. He was at Burnaby’s Bridge Studios before 7 a.m. to get his hair clipped regulation-style, after a couple of days off.

Phillips plays an Earth-bound military colonel on the new series, the guy who was supposed to have jumped across space to check out a huge alien spacecraft. When a series of calamities leaves a more random group of 80 people stranded on that ship, Lou’s gung-ho soldier uses an alien-made communications device that enables long-distance mind-switching, to take over other people’s bodies and throw his weight around the galaxy.

“He still sees himself to be the leader of this group of people and that’s where his frustration comes in,” says Phillips, catching some early-fall sunshine outside the dimly-lit soundstage set. “He keeps trying to get back on the ship to retake command, basically trying to be a hero.”

Digital Spy Interview: Robert Carlyle ('Stargate Universe')

The Stargate franchise suffered a double blow in recent years, with both SG-1 and spinoff Atlantis meeting their (arguably premature) ends. But now fans have something new to look forward to: a brand new spinoff, Stargate Universe! The latest instalment follows the adventures of a present-day team, stranded in a far corner of the universe on board the Ancient spaceship Destiny. Leading the cast is Trainspotting's Robert Carlyle, who plays the brilliant-but-twisted scientist Dr. Nicholas Rush. We hooked up with

Stargate Universe (SyFy, 9:00 PM) will add to the popular franchise. A portion of an upcoming episode was filmed in Alamogordo, New Mexico. I went to Alamogordo in sixth grade for space camp. This can't be a simple coincidence.

The Stargate brand has been kicking around for 14 years now and Syfy seems unwilling to let it die. To wit, the latest extension, which his stocked with new stars (Robert Carlyle, Lou Diamond Phillips, Ming-na) and old sci-fi troupes (the fat and funny whiz kid, the tortured scientist). Hopefully the story itself, which finds a band of alien-attack victims jumping blindly through a stargate and landing on a mysterious spaceship billions of light years from earth, will eventually transcend this premiere’s BSG-lite-ness.
