With all 8 guns firing simultaneously, it's capable of taking down a Shivan Cain-class cruiser in under a minute (heck, possibly even a half minute) alone. As a comparison, during the First Great War, it took several minutes of combined firepower from several fighters and multiple missile volleys (unless you used Tsunami bombs) in order to bring down a Cain-class.
Of course, there's also the Devastator-class bomber from Wing Commander V which is even deadlier in terms of sheer firepower, but is a whole lot less manouverable and extremely susceptible to extremely fast-moving fighters. The new alien enemies in that instalment were shown to have near-impenetrable hulls on all their vessels to current Confederation technology (which by the 3rd instalment was quite easily capable of overcoming almost anything the Kilrathi, the original antagonists, had) and so rapid advancements were made in terms of offensive and defensive technologies.
The Devastator bomber was absolutely ridiculous as it fired a massive, slow-moving ball of energy if you activated and fired all its guns simultaneously (as compared to other fighters, which would just fire all its different beam weapons separately). Nine shots was all it took to down any alien capital ship, including the massive 20+ kilometer long Dreadnought as compared to nearly a couple of dozen torpedos (and most regular energy weapons equipped on lower-end fighters dealt practically zilch damage to cap ship's hulls). Needless to say, any fighter which was the unfortunate recipient of such a shot was instantly KOed.
