SGA - One Big Umbrella: Kate Hewlett Interview:

Umbrella Talk with playwright Kate Hewlett

Welcome back to Umbrella Talk! We kick off our 2009 Umbrella Talk series with playwright and actor Kate Hewlett. Kate's play Humans Anonymous is playing this week at Toronto's Next Stage Festival. Kate tells us what theatrical project she's dying to write next, who she'd like the academics to compare her to 50 years from now and who inspires her---a person who has motivation, courage and is open to change.

A little more about Kate Hewlett

Kate, a National Theatre School and Queens University graduate, is an actor and a playwright. Her plays include Humans Anonymous and The Swearing Jar. Kate was also a member of Tarragon Theatre's Playwrights unit in 2007 and is an associate artist with Unspun Theatre. Selected theatre acting credits include Noble Parasites, Don't Wake Me, Head- Smashed-In and Unity (1918). Selected television and film acting credits include Stargate: Atlantis, Last New Year (feature), Psych and A Dog's Breakfast (feature).

      A brief excerpt:

      Umbrella Talk with Kate Hewlett

How do you deal with praise? With criticism?

After my first episode of Stargate Atlantis aired (I was a guest star in a few episodes) I spent hours -- literally, hours -- reading all of the online comments about my performance. The Stargate fans are loyal and lovely, so it took a long time to find a really cruel one, but when I did...I was finally able to stop looking. I needed to read the worst possible criticism in order to get over my fear of it. Now, I am less affected by reviews, praise, criticism or feedback. The most important thing is the audience reaction, and the experience itself. Reviews are only important because they affect audience turnout.

          From a GateCon e-mail announcement:

Gatecon Update - DVD and Next Convention

          Gatecon 2008 DVD's - Delay

There have been some delays in getting the Richard Dean Andersons footage approved for inclusion in our Gatecon 2008 DVD's.

At this stage we are hoping to have the footage approved and the DVD's ready for shipping by mid to late February.

          We apologise for the delay.

Next Convention will be in 2010

After careful consideration of the current financial markets, and a desire to spend time with our own families this summer, the owners of Gatecon would like to announce that GATECON 10 will be held back in Vancouver in the summer of 2010.

We hope this will give everyone time to save up and come join the family for another fabulous event.

Our thanks and good wishes to all of you! See you in Vangroovy!!

SG1/SGA - Guest Cast in 'Alien Trespass':

            At SciFi Wire:

(Please follow the link for the complete article.)

X-Files' R.W. Goodwin mines classic '50s sci-fi for Alien Trespass

R.W. Goodwin—a former producer, writer and director on The X-Files—has taken his love for 1950s sci-fi films and invested it into Alien Trespass, an independent movie made as if it were a rediscovered remnant from the Red Scare glory days.

Goodwin produced and directed Alien Trespass, which is set in 1957 and begins when a fiery object from space crashes into a mountaintop in the California desert. Out of the flying saucer escapes a murderous creature: the Ghota, which is bent on destroying all life forms on the planet. A benevolent alien from the spaceship, Urp, inhabits the body of Ted Lewis (Eric McCormack), a local astronomer, who with the help of Tammy (Jenni Baird), a waitress from the local diner, sets out to save mankind.

Goodwin screened a featurette for Alien Trespass last Sunday to an audience at the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention, then sat down with SCI FI Wire for an exclusive interview in which he talked about the artistic and technical challenges of making the movie. He also discussed finding the right folks to help him bring '50s sci-fi back to life. Following is an edited version of our interview.

            ~~**~~**

Filmed in British Columbia, Canada, this movie includes some familiar faces: Robert Patrick (SGA's Col. Sumner), Tom McBeath (SG1's Col. Oakville-raised actor keen on Keanu Reeves

By Tina Depko, Oakville Beaver Staff

                    Jan 14, 2009

Many Canadian actors struggle to find enough work, but not David Richmond-Peck.

The Oakville native, who now calls Vancouver home, has been on a roll the past few years.

One of his recent accomplishments is a small role in the Keanu Reeves blockbuster, The Day the Earth Stood Still, which is currently playing in theatres.

Richmond-Peck said working with Reeves, one of his idols, was a dream come true.

... He’s also played small roles in bigger projects, such as the superhero film Fantastic Four, Steven Spielberg’s epic miniseries Into the West, the sci-fi series Stargate Atlantis and the popular series about Superman’s younger days, Smallville.

... For information on Richmond-Peck, go online to www.infinitemotionpictures.com/richmondpeck .

                          excerpt:

Human Anonymous defies its cute-sounding premise of finding love and
connection in our present day (the photo that accompanies the description is
almost incorrect) and instead is an intelligent and witty look at breaking free from our normal choices in an effort to truly connect with our own lives. The show is funny without being silly or cliched, and while some of the writing is akin to television, I don't mean that in a bad way, and instead found the play to be smart and deftly poignant and accurate.

After two successful seasons of Burn Notice, the Miami set spy series makes its return to the USA Network airwaves on January 22. Back on the job as lead character Michael Weston's semi-retired double agent Sam Axe, cult legend Bruce Campbell is looking forward to more fun in the sun with actors Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, and Sharon Gless as the Burn Notice cast readies for another season of covert ops, with a few new suprises and the return of Tricia Helfer's villainous Carla back in the fold ...

                              One Of Life's Little Lessons

My childhood home could be compared to a military compound: we were totally self reliant. We grew all our own food. My mother made pasta noodles by hand in our fallout shelter like basement and baked bread every second Sunday which she kept frozen for years in our caravan-sized deep freeze. Our front yard contained two huge crabapple trees whose blossoms of beautiful white flowers attracted every known kind of bee, which, in turn, gave our yard a kind of low humming drone that sounded like living next to a space heater that never cycled off. Every second season the trees would rain down hard, green, rock-like pellets that would knock one unconscious if one weren't careful. Our backyard, which was about a half acre, was home to an enormous vegetable garden; the sides of the house lined with raspberry bushes ...
