O'Neill becomes the unwilling receptacle for a library of alien knowledge, and ends up at an unlikely meeting with the Asgard.

Why do the asgard have webbed hands???
For all the pollution woes on Earth, will the Human race end up taking those problems into space in the future?

Why wouldn't they? Maybe the Asgard used to be an amphibious race.

This episode and "A Matter of Time" guarenteed that I'd love this show forever

Good episode, but no linguist worth his or her salt (and especially not Daniel Jackson, who is supposed to be a near genius-level speaker of 23+ languages) would have had to scurry off to the dictionary like a high-school student to look up an Ancient word resembling the Latin "locus".
Totally unbelievable and a bad mistake by the writers.

We have webbed hands. Well, semi-webbed. If you look between your toes and fingers, you'll see what resembles webbings. We probably used to have webbed hands back in the day a few million years ago.

This episode remains my absolute favorite episode mostly because this was the episode that opened me to Stargate SG-1's true potential. At that time Stargate was just a tv series that i enjoyed watching but never took seriously.

Along comes 'The Fifth Race' and everything changes. The change in Jack's Character that happens gradually and a sense of desperation in the team to try and find out whats happening to him. But its the ending that sells me every time, from the revelation of passing the 7th chevron and the gate keeps dialling to the Asgards statement of humanity becoming the 'Fifth Race' and that the episode isn't about the Asgard but is actually about Humanity itself.

                    Hands down, best episode ever!!

Is it just me or are the main characters acting a bit dumber than usual?

                          First, in the room.

"Well there's nonething here, besides a large clear outlined circle on the floor. Lets go home."

Or when O'Neill gets grabbed by the Ancient Claws, the rest of SG-1 just standing there, not reacting in any way besides just giving a disconcerning look.

And in the rest of the episode, everyone is treating O'Neill as somebody with a mental handicap or retarded, and never taking him seriously until the end.

That is a good point about them not trying to get it off. However at the time they had no idea what it was what if them moving toward it caused it to hurt jack. They were confused i can't say i would have done any better.

My favourite episode out of all episodes of SG-1. 'The Fifth Race' holds the essence of StarGate.

The friendship moments between Jack and Daniel were so powerful.

The only nit pick I have is: Daniel did not know the meaning of 'locus'? I only did GCSE Latin and I know the definition of that word! Believe me, it was rather unbelieveable that Daniel could translate the rest of the sentence but not that rather easy word! Just glares out wheneevr that part unfolds, otherwise surperb acting, directing and storytelling.

                              Friends forever.

                              You hold great potential.

Ancients, Furlings: The Four Race Alliance.

You know that meaning of life stuff?

                              Nods head

I think we're going to be okay.

The man who opened the way.

The man who led the way.

"It will take you a million light years from home. But will it bring you back?" Stargate the movie

A mystery ... a secret ... a threshold ... to the future. Stargte the movie

The perfect SG-1 team: Colonel Jack, Daniel, Major Ferretti and Jonas

Yeah I never got why he needed the dictionary for that word.
