It's amazing how pretty much everything can be brought back to Sam and Jack though... I was watching MacGyver this morning (ok, so there's a head-start there with references, but still) and Mac was sitting in a sidecar that said 'Jack-be-quick' on the side of it, and that made me laugh cos of course he's Jack, and then I thought of Jack being quick, and then I thought of Upgrades and then I thought of *that scene* and Divide & Conquer and caring more than they're supposed to and...

you see? Being a shipper rewires your brain, I'm sure.

I think it was a deliberate and obvious reference. The show itself always goes on about Sam being so concerned all the time with not effecting the timeline and I'm convinced this was meant to be a nod to Sam.

It seemed to me the author was teasing us with it possibly being Sam. Sam was obviously effected by the idea of Jack having a daughter. Another thing I noticed was that Sam never meet Old Jack. It would have been interesting to see his reaction to seeing her...
