My feelings on Carter and Vala and women in SF: (don't worry, I'm not bashing anyone!)

...she comes across to me as a mother figure rather than a fighter. There's nothing particularly wrong with that, but I never really get to see her shed that and do what needs to be done...be a hardass. Maybe I'm not watching the right episodes, I don't know.

The thing is, she is a good role-model character. She's smart, she's strong...but she embodies the problem I've always had with female action heroes. In general, very few are able to be equal counterparts to the men. If they can kick your butt, they always have to have some sort of redeeming "feminine" feature that makes you realize that they are still a woman. It's like this unwritten rule that the woman has to be the emotional one, or the softer character who has to talk sense into the rash men and communicate rather than act...which usually leads to hesitation when there should be none.

Carter is a decent character and I like the fact that she does fight and does solve a lot of the catastrophes, but I can never fully embrace her as a character because of this. I have no problem with people who love Sam, it's just my personal preference.

The reason I have responded so strongly to Vala is because I feel like she is something I haven't seen before in a female character. The character had the potential to be a one-trick pony, to be a misunderstood sexpot...to be exploited rather than exploitative. But the thing is that both the way I think she was written, and the way CB carries herself give me a completely different vibe. For a lesser actress, that outfit would have automatically made you want to be sexy, but CB had a sort of swagger and way of acting that (even when she was sexy) was never in a way that made you feel she was just there to be sexy (like, ahem...Anise).

Also, another pet peeve of mine has been that female characters always play the "straight man" to the male characters. While I like Weir, Teyla, Roslin, Carter, etc etc...they aren't particularly funny. Vala is. To me, that makes her a rarity in the television/science fiction/action universe.

And can I just say that I love the fact that Vala's major story arc last season didn't revolve around a guy...it revolved around her relationship with her daughter. Interesting, they made her a mother, no? But here's the thing, while Vala does obviously have a softness for her daughter...I never see her as weak because of it...I never think less of her for being maternal. Maybe it's because it's her daughter, and not her co-workers she's taking care of...I don't know. I'm not trying to bash being maternal or motherhood, I'm just saying how I hate how all of these female characters for some reason have to be shown to have a "softer, more gentler feminine side" to counteract the fact that they can kill people. You don't need to take care of your co-workers! They're grown men/women!!

Oh, and I think Starbuck on BSG is an amazingly different character to watch. She's probably been the only female character I've ever wanted to punch. That's a good thing...it means she's a dynamic, infuriating character!

First off ita with what you said. That’s the thing for me with Carter too, I see more as a scientist than I fighter, not that she can’t kick ass, but I don’t see it as her main calling. As for the maternal/mother figure aspect of her character I can see what you’re saying. After all for me, at least, one of her best episodes was the one when we first met Cassie and she heads back down to stay with her. Here she fully embraced her maternal side. You never really see her embrace her badass side.

And while yes, she is a good role model, I feel at time they tried to make her too much of everything. Yes she’s smart, yes she’s strong, yes she’s the woman, but can’t she just tell Jack or the other to shut up just once. The thing is they made her strong, but passive in so many ways.

I remember I brought this up when we were defending Cam. That’s the thing with Carter, she will always think everything through trying to find the right solution when sometimes you just need to act. Some times I think they tried to make her too perfect. The brains, the strength, the emotion, the ‘girl’.

I like Sam’s character fine. I always liked how smart she was and her dynamic with the team, but that was it. That is it.

See here I completely agree with you. I always liked Stargate, but it wasn’t until Vala came in that I began adoring it enough join up here and start writing fiction. I finally saw a female character in the show that I could 100% behind. She sexy, but not overtly so. It’s her natural sensuality and she doesn’t hide it. She has no need to. I also attribute that to CB’s portrayal of her, because if not pulled off correctly Vala could have become another Anise, as you mentioned. And as for the comedy she brings to the character – oh, how I lover her for it. To me humour is one of the most appealing things about a show. It doesn’t have to be laugh out load, or over the top, but there has to be some there. That’s part of the reason I so love the Jack/Daniel dynamic – the way they would play of each other, but there were no female characters with that type of humour.

It’s only been lately in the last season or so that they started paly up Elizabeth’s dry humour and well as Teyla, but to a lesser extent. Before Vala all the comedic female characters in the show were literally joke, sex-pots, and once again the fact that CB can pull it off with making too over the top just adds to her abilities as an actress.

I loved the Adria/Vala story line. I loved how even though she was the mother of the Bad Guy, she was never crying over it. She was tough and wise about it, hell, even Bra’tac said so. She knew the stakes and even though she wished for things to go differently with Adria, she always knew there was really only one way it would go.

She cares about others, but she understands that she’s not the one to dictate their choices. She hated that Daniel stuck his head in the repository, but she supported him after and let him know she did not like it. She likes being on the team, but if ever came to the time to leave I have no doubt that she would.

Vala was tough. There’s no doubt about it. She was ready to kill her daughter and while, of course, she felt something she felt it in the moment. She wasn’t angsting over it all the time.

Oh, Starbuck. I’ve only watch a bit of BSG thus far, but I see what you mean. She married Sam the morning after!!! And that’s all I have to say about that.
