I've highlighted the part of this sentence that amused me. If I'd said that around here I'd be told I was being snotty and had the mickey taken out of me. 'Terribly' is a very proper, upper class associated term.
My brother used to have a go at me on a daily basis, for using posh and snotty language, after I came home from uni. I was actually just using a wider, more advanced vocabulary; I've since learned to talk dumb. My language and vocabulary is totally different with my friends, or on here, than it is with anyone in my home town.

I think I actually learned that from Helen Magnus Or Doctor who. I discovered both British shows at approximately the same time and you're right. "Terribly" is a more proper/British way of putting things.

I'm sorry you feel like you have to "talk dumb" but rest assured, you're not the only one. I had to do the same when I was younger - it's much better now that I'm in graduate school. I had to teach myself to be more colloquial(?) - not quite more slang, but more phrases that are less complicated? - and "current" with my vocabulary. However I'm lucky enough to have two friends that love languages with whom I can talk with using the full extent of my vocabluary.
