I would guess that the Nox was either a hologram and the sword destabilized its transmission or that, like the Ancients in the diner, when something from "our world" intersected with the Ancient, it passed through and "light" could be seen "seeping" through.

As for ascension, we've seen in Stargate that it's possible to be a non-corporeal entity without actually ascending.

They are energy beings that couldn't react with anyone in normal form, except each other. They used force fields to make their human form, a bit like anubis used one to keep his form intact, but more advanced so they can appear as human and not as a shiny wavy thing.
