I just wish some people wouldn't take it so seriously like the author is actually making a career out of it and that the reader is being ripped off. It's fun. It's entertaining. That's fan fiction!
It is. And i'd never tell anyone 'you suck, stop writing'. Because no matter what someone writes, there's SOMEONE out there that'll read it.

Some authors are really good at capturing an interpretation of the characters that appeals broadly, others pick a pairing or style that has a limited, but loyal, appeal. And i personally admire those that keep plugging along at a story they want to tell, even if it's not a story that's got broad appeal.

It's 'easy' to crank out template fic. Over the years I've seen authors that would write one of two types of fic, and that's all she ever wrote, either plotline A or plotline B. And the author is wildly popular.

And then i've seen authors that write a wide variety of stuff never get that broad appeal because they write so many kinds and styles that they never really find a fanbase.

Unending played on the Sam/Teal'c relationship, but fanfic writers had been toying with that for years. I had a situation once where, in a fic, during End Game, i suggested that the planet Sam tricked the bad guys out of attacking was the new home of Ishta's people. A few months later, I was helping someone proof their trivia book and she was putting in her book that the planet in End Game was the new home of the Haktyl. And I had to tell her no, that wasn't canon. It was something she'd gotten out of my fic thought it was real, when it was just me making stuff up.

That's where the lines between fanon and fanfic blur with 'reality' and canon. Fanfic does feed fanon. Spacemonkey - a term that Jack used ONCE in the show, became one of the most overused nicknames in the history of the show, thanks to fanfic.

If an author writes a fic interpreting glances and looks as indications of a relationship, those that read her fic will then watch future shows influenced by that piece of fanfic.

and that's where fanfic becomes this channel, so to speak, where the fans start to effect others' interpretations of the show.

I don't really read fan fiction, but one time I followed a link through Solutions and ended up reading what can only be described as hard core gay porn between Daniel and Jack. What did it add to the experience of enjoying Stargate? It didn't really... Why did I read it? I'm immature and found some of the quotes funny...

It's called 'slash' - for the forward slash used between the two characters names.
The first media slash started in the 1970's in Star Trek fandom.
It is principally, not exclusively, written for women, by women. Womens sexuality has often been ignored, particularly with regard to erotica and pornography.

There are well respected papers on the subject, the best well know being Jenkins' Textual Poachers: Television Fans & Participatory Culture, which was written before the internet took hold but is still a very interesting read.

But some of us have a hard drive full of it because we think the idea of two handsome men having a relationship, sexual or otherwise, is hot.

              K/C = Kirk and Chekov

the & signified het, the / homosexual

That's how it was done in the 'good old days' before the internet and the recent phenomenon of smushed names

The single initials are a bit hard to keep track of, especially, like to use trek, you have sulu, spock, scotty....who's who if you have S/S???

Laughs, K/S was such a monolith, I don't think there was much room for any other slash pairing. Ah, Spock in Manacles, those were the days (I remember the production in Glasgow in... oh Ghu, 1985, I feel old). I didn't even watch Trek and I knew about K/S!

                    Episode #60 is now available!

Why are so many fans drawn to write and read fan fiction about Stargate and their other favorite shows? This week Darren and David make up for our inadequacies by bringing on a fan fiction expert: Louisa Robison, a graduate student at the University of Alberta and a fellow fan. Her thesis is titled: “Gilgamesh and Enkido, Arthur and Gwenhywfar, Alexander and Hephaistion, Tristan and Isolde, Jack and Daniel: Retelling epic myth through the medium of fan fiction.”

Our in-depth discussion of the fanfic phenomenon ranges from just who writes it (90 percent women, according to one study), to the use of someone else’s creative property, to relationships, gender issues, and homosexuality in the fan fiction world. If fanfic (of any variety) interests you, don’t miss this week’s show.

                      Listener Question
Ark of Truth to me, was a satisfying ending to the Ori storyline. The inclusion of the Replicaters was something I could have lived without, but when the lovely Morena Baccarin was only available for one day (or was it two days), they had to fill the movie with something. What she did bring to Ark of Truth, was her most defining moments as Adria, and those moments brought the true wrath of of the character, that weren't seen in SG-1. Had TPTB had more time with Morena, I'm sure her role could have been greatly increased, and her new position all the more epic.

                        Reaction to Episode 60

I found this podcast very interesting, especially being a fanfiction writer myself. A lot of fans dismiss work like this because they believe it's all slash or shipping and that none of it can be a serious, continuing work. But if you take the time to read the books, or online shows like Horizon, or even some of the stuff here on GateWorld, what we authors can try and add-on to the franchise is so much more; where the shows leave off with the adventures of just a handful of people, fanfiction writers can explore whole new realms of the galaxies.

Like one of the fan mail questions asks: fanfiction can try and answer the questions left lingering in the show, and open up all these amazing possibilities in Stargate.

Glad my comment helped spark a deep discussion. I think you guys(Darren and David) got my meaning right. My comment about "twisted fantasy" was not intended towards someones sexuallity the way Louisa suggested. I was refering to it being twisted because it isn't respectful to the estabished traites of the characters. I would say the same if they tried to write gay characters as straight. Sorry if it was interpreted in the wrong way.

                          This Week’s Listener Question:

I always refer to this movie as "as good as it could have been without having Jack O'Neill in it" It was exciting and the addition of the replicators surpised me. My only problem was the unwise choice to not have RDA in the first DVD movie and the continued attempt to have us love Cam. For the most part, though, I really liked it.

                          Thanks as always

from the objective pov of closing down the ori storyline, AOT did the job, even if the lack of adria did effect things.

from the enjoyment pov, well you had to be a fan of the ori storyline to really enjoy the movie. I wasn't a fan of AOT, so it's kinda of like asking a vegetarian if the newest steak dish sounds good. In one way, sure, in another, there's a lack of appeal

                              Thoughts on Ark of Truth

As evidenced by the fact that, as one can see in my signature, I rewrote the entire movie to my liking, I can confidently say that I hated this movie with a passion. It felt horribly tacked-on, and the addition of the Replicators as an anti-Ori weapon, while creative and interesting in theory, was carried out quite poorly, with little logic and even less respect to the tendencies and abilities of the bugs that we had come to see in previous installments of SG-1. Overall, it just wasn't a well-done movie, and I'd have rather waited another year for a conclusion to the Ori arc than have that serve as the ending.

I Found The Ark Of Truth satisying but not more, I can understand that they wanted to make a movie not an other sg1 ep but its a bit slow in some places
