We’ve been talking on Samanda about quilts and charity donations and I
have come up with a little project that every Amanda Fan can take part
in. It’s open to everyone even if they are not attending AT3, or on
Gateworld, so you can cross post this to any relevant list or forum you
wish.
Here’s the plan.
Everyone who wants to take part needs to purchase a FAT QUARTER of
PATCHWORK 100% Cotton fabric in a predominantly Blue colour/ pattern.
Please only normal cotton fabric (no flannel or brushed cottons please).
Just pick something you like.
In case you don’t know, a fat quarter is a yard or metre of fabric cut
horizontally and vertically down the middle to yield four rectangular
pieces of fabric about the size of a napkin. Any patchwork shop will
know what you mean and have a selection of fabrics to choose from.
“metric” (where fabric is normally sold by the metre) or “Imperial”
(sold by the yard) fat quarters are both okay. You just need a single
fat quarter.
Once you have your fat quarter you need to do something very very
important. This isn’t a step you can skip, it’s vital.
You need to give your fabric a hug.
Don’t be shy, just hug it!!!
The finished quilt is going to be called “The Quilt of Many Hugs”
If you can, get a picture taken of you hugging your fabric, I will ask
you to e-mail that to me along with your name at a later date so I can
put them all together as evidence of the hugs that have been infused
into the quilt.
Once you have charged your fabric with hugs, I need you to post it to me
as soon as possible. Please, if you can, use normal stamps as opposed
to the printed labels the post office issue. The hearing dogs collect
postage stamps for fundraising.
The address is:
QOMH Project
GABIT Events Ltd.
PO BOX 6154,
Basildon,
ESSEX
SS14 OGE
United Kingdom
I will make up the fabric into a quilt. Before I piece it I will
embroider the name of the donator onto a patch of the fabric you donated
with my embroidery machine. It will be in a unifying font, you don’t
need to sign anything.
You can get patchwork fabric from Hobbycraft, Joann fabrics or
specialist patchwork shops. If you have trouble locating a mail order
place I recommend in the USA http://www.equilter.com/ They have a
great range for you to choose from and have a program where they donate
2% of your purchase to charity. If you don’t have a local shop or one
you can get to, most shops do mail order off their websites and
Equilter .com ship all over the world.
We would also like to use this opportunity to raise a little bit of
money for the charity, so we also ask that you make a small donation (at
least £5) to Hearing dogs. For people in the UK, please send a cheque
with your fabric. Please make the cheque payable to “Hearing Dogs for
Deaf People”. We’d also be grateful if UK taxpayers could complete a
simple gift aid declaration ( which I can e-mail to you) which enables
the charity to re-claim from the Inland revenue 28p extra for every £1
donated.
For those of you outside the UK, we are just checking with the charity
the most cost effective ay of accepting overseas donations. Please
leave that one with us for a few days while we check things out.
But don’t let it stop you buying your fabric, charging it with hugs and
sending it to me.
When the quilt is finished, it will be presented to Amanda as a great
big ever lasting hug from all her fans.
So does that sound like something you guys would like to take part in?
If so, I really really need to get all the fabric in by the end of
September. That’s nearly six weeks so get shopping and hugging!!!
Big Quilty Hugs

Becky, your idea sounds lovely and I hope to contribute. In the meantime, I have a question about the "VAT included" in the AT9 booking code ... I made my hotel reservation by phone and discussed the no charge of VAT and the fellow seemed to confirm this as he went into the block of rooms for Amanda's event.
However, I just now looked up my online reservation status and there is a 13.12 GBP showing nightly as an addition to the 75GBP special room rate. It's listed as "government taxes and fees" ... can G4 tell me if that is another tax and not the VAT? Has anyone else booked and also being charged same thing? Do we need to have this nightly rate removed from our projected bills or does everything get taken care of the weekend of check-in?
Really appreciate clarification on the "taxes".

Speaking of the hotel. I was looking at the hotel page the other day and it was funny because if you check in on the 2nd (Friday morning) and stay until the 5th (Monday morning), you can get an advance booking room rate of $59.00GBP/night for a quality room also, or $72GBP if you want to be able to cancel.

One thing to keep in mind at this hotel for anyone who hasn't stayed there before. Unlike most Marriott's that I have stayed in where you can add a third person for a small fee or no fee at all, this one does not seem to allow it. In fact, most of the rooms clearly state that there is a two person maximum; though I'm sure there were a few people who managed to get around those little issues.Last edited by ForeverSg1; 25 August 2007, 04:28 PM.

So I suppose if you want to take a risk that nothing will happen before now and AT3, you could effectively get the room for a few dollars less if you don't want to eat there; but honestly I prefer being able to cancel up until the last moment. It just makes life much easier.

Originally posted by ChopinGal View PostI agree, Kat. The GABIT special rate per night is the way to go. For those of you who are new to the event, the morning breccie in the dining room is a full buffet and the most accessible space for dining. There are local pubs etc. for later meals but the included breakfast is worth doing.Last edited by ForeverSg1; 25 August 2007, 07:33 PM.
