we are literally back to the days of the 'wild wild west' again in some parts of the western states, mexico.

the mexican drug gangs....not a cliche. It's very real. there's even parts of western Kansas, while not dangerous like TJ, are almost a foreign country unless you're bilingual.

I echo folks' suggestions to stay in 'safe' places.

It should be fairly comfy in LA & SD, but it gets RLY cold at night. So pack accordingly.

I wouldn't even go to TJ during the day with friends.
Yes! The zoo and animal park (about 45 minutes out) are AMAZING

Oh, I'm sure there are loads! Any town might have them even. One night in Vancouver a couple weeks back comes to mind: Taking the skytrain, just *one more* stop to spend more time with friends, thinking we could walk backtrack to our hotel no problem, and running into a graffiti'd part of the city that had us hiding our maps from others view. A panhandler even cursed at us and threatened (jokingly?!) to knock out the next passerby and take their money since his frustration level was rising with our refusal. Yikes.

Feb is a little chilly to swim at the beach, but going to dip your toes in is fun no matter how cold. There is also a ton of hiking (though not easily accessible without a car - the story of L.A.). I also know of a decent hostel in Hollywood (and one hostel to avoid!) - at least it was decent about 8 or 9 years ago when I last stayed at it.
So we can't call it kidnapping?

Seriously, if you and the boy are free and haven't made plans already when we're there, we'd love to have both of you hang out with us for some fun.

We were discussing taking a yacht cruise in S.D Bay last night during our travels in Calif on one of the tall ships that was used during the America's Cup race in the past. Of course this led to the conversation of N.Z. winning the cup one year and some history her country has with the race. Should be an interesting day.

Never, actually. It was Switzerland who took us down.

I thought the Swiss were always neutral. They shouldn't have kept the prize.

You've challenged us many times before though and didn't win. It actually took you six tries before you won the cup from us the first time.

We of course won it back promptly with the next race.
