A Lieutenant Colonel commands alot more than a 4 person team. If the Stargate program was real, I couldn't see anyone higher than Major leading a team off world.

True. Before I started my undercover work my CO was a Lt.Col and we had way more than 4.

I think what is happening with Atlantis is that they don't have a lot of officers sent out there, certainly not like the number of officers assigned to the SGC. They have to use what they have, and and so pretty much any officer could possibly end up leading a team, from Lieutentant to Captain to Major to Lt Col.

I don't know whether Captain Porter will end up on Sheppard's team or Lorne's team, or end up leading her own. But I don't think we can rule out her being a team leader just because she's a Captain, since we've seen officers with lower ranks lead teams on Atlantis.

where did you read that? Joe said the new commander will be added to the list of regulars, he didn't comment on Porter

My mistake, I read the article in GW and I saw regular, but they were just speculating.

Who will play her? Which actress would you like to see in this new regular / recurring role?

For starters,I'm hoping the actress chosen will have never before appeared on SG1 or SGA.I don't mind re-used actors,in lesser roles ,but I have a feeling this Capt Alison Porter may be featured quite highly,either drafted into in Sheppard's team ,to cover Teyla for a while,or perhaps with Lorne's team.

I think they should have found out a better name. Carter-Keller-Porter sound a little weird after each other.

make her an army captain. It's always air-force or marines, mix it up a little. Or even a captain in another military - british or german or australian or something. that would be cool.

I think that could work, though the name doesn't really sound Germanic.Maybe she's British,or from Australia..or a Commonwealth country .

Given that the whole project is supposed to be multinational ,it's about time we saw other countries' characters and teams represented more.IMO,anyway.

Good ole Sergeant Bates used to have a team, granted they were cut off from Earth back then. Also if you go back to like Season 1 or 2 of SG-1 I think there were Captains commanding SG teams. Carter's ex fiance from The First Commandment was a Captain if memory serves. So it would definitely not be out of the realm of possibility for Porter to have her own team.

Kate Beckinsale would be cool..and she could wear the black leather anyway,given that leather recently became part of the uniforms on SGA.

I would totally love her character if she was a complete new-b , meaning shes just done her military training and shes been dragged off to atlantis . she could bring in the aspect of

1) having a mum and dad and family that she constantally goes to see
2) she could be "molded" and "taught" by colonel sheppard ...
3) we really need people who aren't pro at what they do , i mean we have the supers

Well, outside of being a weapons specialist, I really felt that Ford was there because he was being exemplified as the resident 'newb'. A big reason I disagree with his early departure from the series was that I don't think he had been given a fraction of the time it should have taken to evolve into something more; making him what he became basically skipped ahead in his projected character development ridiculously. He was the known -- he faced the unknown. He was young, brash and headstrong.

I'm all for that too. But since she's coming, I'm just hoping for the best of it. Writers are usually okay with creating a new character, although there are enough in it already that I'd like to see more and know more about, but that's apparently not what the writers are fully going for.

I'm not sure if the name Alison Porter actually reveals anything about the character, but I'd really love to see an Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, or any other ethnically diverse character added to the team, (if they really need a new face). And I know Rachel and Jason fit this def, but on the show they are "aliens". I'd like to see some Earth variety too.
