What is Shep Whumping?

Oooh that's a tough one. It's uh.. hard to define exactly.

Basically..

Whumping = wanting to see the character suffer pain and hardship, be it physical or mental. It's also knownas hurt/comfort. It doesn't mean you don't like the character, in fact, quite the contrary. It's partly to do with, I think, the mothering instinct, wanting to look after someone who's hurt. It's partly to do with sexual attraction (I've never known a whumper who was interested in whumping a character he/she didn't find attractive). It's partly to do with character development - when you see a character under dire circumstances, you see another side to them; you see their strengths, their weaknesses, you see what they are like behind the mask they present to the world.

What is Shep Whumping?

Whumping is also referred to as hurt/comfort. A whumper prefers to see their favorite character (in this case Sheppard) struggle through injury/illness and come out stronger (with lots of comfort from team/friends).

Many others here can explain it much better than that. However, if you have seen the episodes 38 Minutes or Common Ground, those are Shep whump eps. Grace Under Pressure and Tao of Rodney would be McKay whump eps.

Shep Whumping = Wonderful, Heavy Breathing, Heart Pounding, Sweating, Eyes Glistening Excitement.

JF does such a marvelous job at portraying pain - hidden and obvious, emotional and physical. He really makes the character 3 Dimensional and real. You really feel like Shep is suffering and you just want to jump in and help with any kind of heavy stick or bullet...um...hug and care you can give.

This is OT but ABC's site has a "sneak peek" clip of Joe's Women's Murder Club eppy up. It's a scene between his character and Lindsay (Angie Harmon), Joe doesn't actually speak but you see lots of him.
