Rodney isn't trained in how to behave in a kidnapping/torture situation. He's not good with people, he can't manipulate them with words like Elizabeth or John might. All Rodney believes he has is his brain and his pride. He shown a tendency to panic. He really doesn't want to be hurt. I believe when he was first cut and threatened with more pain, he talked. Rodney wasn't going to be stoic and hold out until Elizabeth was threatened. Threats to his own person were enough.
I don't think he was stoic, I think he was stubborn and prideful. I have been in a position before where all I had to say was uncle and the pain would stop, but I was too stubborn to do so and so it continued until I was very injured. It wasn't bravery or heroics that made me go on, it was just me being being stubborn... and I think Rodneys the same way. If they had continued, I think they would have broken him eventually, but you don't need torture training to be stubborn.

Rodney isn't contemptuous. He's starts out very subdued, letting Elizabeth do all the talking. In The Eye,
    Spoiler:
at the grounding station when Kolya demands that Rodney do something about the lockout John has placed in the Control Room, Rodney backs away from Kolya until he's up against the railing and can go no futher. When Koyla has Rodney bent back over the railing, and making as if to throw Rodney over into the sea, Rodney is so afraid, he slips back into his normal arrogant tone. "You still need me! You still need both of us!" But when Kolya lets him go and walks away, Rodney's knees almost give out as he puts his head in is hands. The man who says he can't bluff, just did so in a very big way. A very powerful scene by David.

Later, in the Control Room, when Rodney tells Koyla the plan to save the city won't work, "I don’t know if you noticed or not but I’m an extremely arrogant man who tends to think all of his plans will work!" Rodney is again bluffing for all he's worth. He gets hit in the face for his efforts, but Kolya believes him.
See I just don't buy that Rodney is afraid of the Genii. In Underground, he's not afraid of them. When he gets taken in The Storm, I don't doubt that he was scared of the situation, anyone would be, but he showed strength all thru the episodes. Even the scenes you listed I found to be strong scenes for him, every time he used his best tools (stubborness, pride, arrogance and sarcasm) to create a situation where he had some limited control over what was going on... which was more than what Elizabeth was doing. In the beginning yes he let her talk, she is the leader and negotiatior, but look where it got her.

Edit: Put the wrong episode down, ment to say Underground instead of Brotherhood

Oh my god, that is so funny! I wish I knew how to do that! Er, how do you do that?

So, Purpleyin, are you taking orders? Can you do Rodney's happy hands? When he snaps his fingers then hits the side of one fist with the flat palm of the other? He does that in Childhood's End when walking thru the forest telling John about finding the ZPM. He does it again in Home when General Hammond says it's ok for Rodney to have a ZPM to test with. And he distractedly does it near the end of Hot Zone right before Radek comes over and they do the can't quite connect high five bit (that's so funny!).

Sadly, this first season you see more of Rodney's anxious hand twitches than you do of Rodney's happy hands.

BTW, David does the happy hands in his movies. I know he does it in Century Hotel and in Joe's Wedding.

I didn't say he was stoic. I said he wasn't going to be stoic. I said
        Spoiler:
threatening him was enough. There is no threat to Elizabeth implied in the episode.

He was caught by surprise at what the Genii would do.

Again, I didn't say Rodney was afraid of the Genii in The Brotherhood. I said he wasn't. I did say Rodney was afraid in The Storm/The Eye. Again, he got caught by surprise.

Rodney now knows what the Genii are all about. Knowledge is power to Rodney. Which makes Rodney a very powerful person.

I just screencapped frame by frame - saving each one and then importing them into GIMP (my graphics program of choice) each as new layer (have to put layers going last frame as top layer and first frame as bottom layer) and saved them as an animated gif. The small one just had a selected area I capped the whole image to. Quite easy really, though animated gifs go bobbly only having 256 colour scale.

I could do but since you like the hand porn so much you could give it a try... I'd say yes but I'm kind of busy making a Childhoods End vid right now.

I didn't say that you did think he was, I was saying that I agreed with you and didn't think he was being stoic.

And there was a threat to Elizabeth
            Spoiler:
how about that big gun in her face
True it wasn't until after Rodney was hurt, but the threat was in the air the whole time for both of them.

How is everyone??? I can't believe all the droolworthy caps I've missed cos of the server being down. So depressing! One Mckay cap a day keeps the Doctor away and brightens my day...oh bad rhymage...and I'm accident prone so I guess it doesn't keep the Doctor away. Guess what I'm trying to say is caps are gooooooood! As is hand porn, arm porn and caps of Davids pretty eyes.

Love that Siege piccie up there Toaster. Doesn't it just make ya wanna give him a big hug. Awwwwww! Poor Rodders! He needs some TLC.

Now that I have the hand caps out of the way, did you notice this when you saw the episode Underground? I did and I thought it was a nice detail. At least I think it was a nice detail. I hope I'm not reading more into it.

We start the episode discussing the Genii as possible food trading partners. Rodney is eating and drinking just to get his share of the current rations before going off on the mission.

Later, the team is invited to a feast. Rodney wonders if there are lemons in the food. Ford says, "Eat!"

But, I noticed Rodney doesn't eat. He drinks

                      And drinks some more

but doesn't seem to eat anything. So it was a good thing he ate earlier. Here you can see everyone still has their plate in front of them, but Rodney's plate is gone.

I think he really was worried about the alien food.

Which would be understandable if he actually wasn't exaggerating on the, presumably, anaphylactic shock as a possible reaction to eating anything with citrus. Maybe that's yet another reason he's cranky on missions (I know he's quite cranky anyway by most people's definition but I'm thinking about his no diplomacy-lets get everything done as soon as possible attitude) -maybe he just wants to get home to all those safe lemon-free rations...

I don't think he's exaggerating. I think he is really allergic to citrus. And I think he tells everybody that he's allergic and hypogycemic because if he has a reaction and is unconcious somewhere, he wants everyone to know why so they can start saving him without delay.

In my imagination, I think sometime in his past he has some reaction to citrus, or he had a vey bad hypogycemic episode and he almost died because no one was sure why he was in the state he was in. And that's why he makes sure everybody knows about his condition. He really should be wearing a MedAlert bracelet.

Remember how he behaved in The Defiant One when he said he was allergic to bee stings? He was really afraid of the glowy bug. I don't think he would have acted that way in front of 3 other guys if he really wasn't nervous. Rodney is usually very emotionally transparent.

Sigh, I had a great answer to this that was eaten by the server yesterday.

Yeah, no one knew what the Genii were capable of after the encounter in Underground. Or at least the Genii leaders. Who knows what their leaders are telling them about the Atlantis expedition?
