Elizabeth Weir/John Sheppard Appreciation/Ship/Discussion Thread
For me it was harder to write her in fanfiction, but I think I improved. The tricky part is achieving a strong female who isn't afraid of caring and asking for help. She is a such fine line to walk and it's easy to succumb to stereotypes when writing female characters.
For me he is easier because of the soul wounded quality. I am trained to read through people with problems. Yes, Elizabeth has issues too, but not as big as John's. I can imagine her growing up in stable and happy family, whereas him.... hmmmmm. There had to be something and fans usually connect his character to his father we actually know nothing about. But it's a good choice, nothing can screw you up like parent of the same sex; because kids usually look up to them.
EDIT: oh by the way I forgot to tell you guys - it's OT but it's hilarious so I want you to know. I have to give a lecture on emotional intelligence. EQ includes many skills, people skills among them. I think I'll turn Rodney into teaching material (to show what is NOT EQ and people skills). Do you have any John or Elizabeth moment to suggest, to add it to my examples? (kids love movie or TV show clips) Now tell me I aint fun teacher!
Oddly it hasn't been as hard writing Elizabeth as I thought it would be. I just stay away from the career related part of her. Although I pretty much do that with all characters and focus on the personal side.
I couldn't really relate to her though when I started watching the show, but I found I could really relate to John on an emotional level. It took fandom for me to really appreciate Elizabeth as I do now.

M< story is similar. Some fans write Elizabeth so amazingly and I think she grew a lot more in fanfiction than on screen and it was fan fiction that helped me understand her better.
I can also agree on relating to John on emotional level, especially through season 1.
Anuna - THANK YOU for all the fic recs. Some of those titles are familiar, but some I know I have not yet read. I really appreciate your suggestions!
I'm at work listening to the "Grease" soundtrack. Just got done with "You're The One That I Want". Had a complete visual in my head of J and E the whole time the song was playing. How crazy is that? LOL!
I'm writing my own fic at the moment and can't fight off some sad feeling right now, but you've just given me idea what to listen to I hope you'll enjoy those fics. I do. I read some of them couple of times
EDIT: my bf is watching Siege. He is still at first part. I'm waiting to hear what he thinks of THE scene in Siege two... and the hug of course!!! *is impatient*
Actually go to http://www.sheppardweir.com/fanfics/index.php. Most everything there is good. Except for the occasional one written by someone without a clear grasp of the concept. Writing, I mean. *puts down red pen*

I think I found right kind of music - classical. Singing out loud to something like "Nessun Dorma" (not that I can sing so good) makes me feel a LOT better.
Guys do you think John would enjoy opera? And as I mention that, is there anybody else who could imagine him as torreador from 'Carmen'?
"Before I Sleep" is probably my favorite overall SGA episode. I've lost track of how many times I've watched it. For me, it really defines who Elizabeth Weir is. But what I find equally fascinating is John's reaction to old Elizabeth. When they find her and are speculating about why she might be there, he is the one who says "maybe she wanted to stay behind." He doesn't even know yet that it's Elizabeth, yet he knows this was her choice. Is he subconsciously sensing their connection?

Oh stop, we certainly are supportive here.
Opera? Hmm...as an opera lover I can't imagine anyone not loving it. John, though, is very much a traditional male. Football, flying, beer, big-breasted blondes, comic books...not sure about opera. I think he probably likes some of it...the more pop oriented singers like Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, like that. He could probably sit through Verdi and enjoy it, but the ones with the fat ladies and the Valkyries not so much. Even then I think he would deny liking it, especially to another guy. But not to a woman if he thought it would get him...never mind. Now ballet? Never.
OMG! I smell a plot bunny. Who's not writing? Here's a freebie.

Oh I agree about Verdi and I also agree that valkyres are a big no - no. But imagine him accompanying Elizabeth to... Carmen let's say. I am so damn stuck to that opera, I was even considering making a video to 'Habanera'. (I am so damn sure he'd like torreadors aria... because that guy is so full of it!). What he would enjoy is watching Elizabeth's face and she would be lost in music. Oh I can see it.
And if he ever saw Elizabeth dancing ballet... oh I am postive that would turn his world upside down.
Thank you SR for your fic suggestions as well. Also some new ones (to me) on your list.
YAY - I have lots of reading to do. I'm going to have to ration myself so my poor family doesn't feel neglected. =)
Just ask Suzotchka - I tend to get sucked in by fics and before you know it, I'm hunched over my keyboard, eyes glazed and three hours have gone by. WHOOPSY!
