Question: I'll take one large Medium scoop to go, please. -- Tim

Ausiello: The show will air a special two-hour episode in May that tackles an issue I know a little something about: crazed stalkers. "Allison's public now, and along with that comes certain complications," explains executive producer Glen Gordon Caron. "And one of them is that there is a gentleman [played by Underworld's Tony Curran] who authentically believes that her very existence runs contrary to the will of God. He threatens to kill her, so she starts to require police protection. The episode takes some very interesting turns."

Simone in St. Louis: Any dish on the undersung Medium?

      Spoiler:
Just that the family might be moving out of Phoenix! Joe's getting a job offer later this season that would mean a move to San Diego. What do you guys think—could you stand it so long as the family stayed together?

Question: I had a dream last night that there was a juicy tidbit in this week's Ask Ausiello about Medium. Please tell me I'm tapping into that DuBois skill and you have something to report! --Brian

        Spoiler:
Ausiello: Wow, spooky. I actually do have some juicy scoop. Remember me telling you last week that Arrested Development's Jeffrey Tambor was guest-starring in a May episode? Well, there's a bigger story there. Turns out, he's actually replacing Patricia Arquette in the episode. According to an insider, the Emmy winner requested a little time off, so producers crafted an episode in which Allison passes her spirit-communicating skills to Tambor's character. Neat trick, huh?

Nell in New Orleans: Medium is kicking butt this year. What's coming up?

          Spoiler:
A cool but scary storyline for Allison—she's going to need brain surgery, but the kicker is that it might remove her psychic powers, which she believes she needs to protect Joe and the kids from an evil killer!

Fall TV: NBC Sizes Up Medium for a Sixth Season

On the eve of its Monday "infront" presentation of 2009-10 TV season plans, NBC renewed Medium for a sixth season, says the Hollywood Reporter. An NBC rep has no comment on the report.

The new season of Medium is expected to fall in the 13 to 18 episode range, as NBC (like its peers) struggles to cut down costs while cementing its fall schedule.

Medium's pick-up comes one day after NBC decided to keep the cops of Southland on duty for a second cycle.

                NBC cancels Medium

NBC has passed on ordering another season of Medium. However, CBS, which owns the show, is expected to pick it up and pair it on Fridays with Ghost Whisperer.

CBS schedule: Medium lives, Ghost Whisperer gets season 5

After a sniping match between NBC and CBS executives about Medium, CBS added the Patricia Arquette supernatural drama to its Friday nights, following Ghost Whisperer, in the upfront announcement of its fall schedule on Wednesday in New York.

The buzz had been that CBS would pick up Medium, which is produced by CBS TV Studios, if NBC decided to cancel it, which it did on Tuesday.

NBC co-chairman Ben Silverman had said Medium was "an aging franchise, without a single fan letter, with no passion" after the show's cancellation.

CBS TV Studios shot back in a statement: "NBC's cancellation of Medium is inexplicable to us. The ratings don't lie: Medium outperforms many of NBC's renewed shows."

Fall TV: Which sci-fi/fantasy series will win, lose, draw?

Medium: With NBC's Jay Leno Show taking up five spots on the schedule, it came down to the last minute as to whether or not Medium would get a pick-up. The buzz was that NBC wanted to order 13 episodes, but star Patricia Arquette had 22-episode seasons specified in her contract. True? Maybe. In any case, what's certainly true is that CBS is very happy to get a hold of Medium since the show is produced by CBS TV Studios, which means the studio will get more of the profits than it would have if the show had remained on NBC. Regardless of the circumstance, this should be a very good move for this psychic mommy detective series. It will get a full season of episodes and—finally—a true home on the schedule with Ghost Whisperer, driving some compatible viewers its way. Beyond that it looks to be a winner for CBS as well, with the series offering a nice solid bridge to both Ghost and Numb3rs. We're calling Medium a WINNER.

Is a Medium/Ghost Whisperer crossover possible?

Fans of Medium were relieved when CBS decided to pick up the show after NBC did not renew it for the fall schedule, and today, president of CBS Entertainment Nina Tassler told reporters that her network will do Medium better than its original broadcaster.

"On behalf of the studio, I don't think NBC really treated the show the way it should have been treated, where it was put on the schedule, how it was supported," Tassler said in a press conference at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Pasadena, Calif. "To get Emmy winner Patricia Arquette on Friday night for us was a home run."

Tassler did not remember the specific chronology of when NBC let Medium go and when CBS swooped in, but she recalls proactively chasing the show. "When we did know that we had an opportunity, we jumped at it," Tassler continued. "We're thrilled with the show. I can't remember the actual chronology, but it was pretty fast."

Medium joins Ghost Whisperer on CBS Friday nights in the fall. The two shows create a supernatural block for CBS, with both Patricia Arquette and Jennifer Love Hewitt playing characters with the power to communicate with spirits of the dead. For now, that is where the similarities will end, but Tassler remained open to the possibility of crossovers in the future.

                          continues:
