Earth world capitol - Where would you put it?

I pray that I will never see a one-world government in my life time nor the next generation's. Government isn't the answer, it is the problem.

So how would you run the world, if not via a government. Let the coorporations run the place or the anarchist or may be some crazy priests.

We could convert all of Tasmania or Hawaii into one giant city. Of course they'd have to denounce their attachments to Australia and America respectively, which now I think about it I am not sure Hawaii can do that, and become their own city state.

First of all corporations already run most governments, how do you think people pay for their campaigns especially in the US. Anarchists couldn't run anything because to be an anarchist traditionally you believe in no government or orderly body, hence being a complete hypocrite if they ran the place and lastly we already have crazy religious people running countries, hence "For god and country", "God save the Queen/King" and anything else that requires someone to swear anything by a bible or other religious book. But if we were to run a planet without a government we could always just put it down to a vote with a representative or ambassador from each country of the world, like the UN and Commonwealth do already to make a major decision.

No one should have the authority to run the world. Man is imperfect, power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

By that argument then no one should be allowed to govern anything, even a nation state. Which is in itself patently ridiculous. As is the idea that people in democratic systems have absolute power. Checks and balances and constitutions exist to prevent that from happening.

And further if we are addressing scifi concepts what happens in some future when there are off world colonies. Must earth simply remain fractured because that’s always been the way? If earth is now just one home of humanity among many, rather than just the only one, what’s the problem, because at that point they wouldn’t have power over humanity, just a fraction of it, just like governments of countries do already.

Or do you believe that organisations like the UN and the EU are part of the secretly a conspiracy to bring about world government? Which would be amusing considering that the UN couldn’t get its act together and order a sandwich, let alone organise a government, and the EU is pretty much broke, on the verge of collapse and as popular as a screaming baby on a plane with most people in Europe. Suffice to say that a world government ain’t happening anytime soon.

Your reaction is very extreme. I am not suggesting there should be no government. I just have a big problem with large governments that think they know best. I prefer local government over big brother. Take the USA, our biggest problem is that there's too much Federal power over the states. The Federal government needs to back off and let the states run themselves as they see fit. Also, the USA is not a democracy, we are a Democratic Republic. Check, balances, constitutions, and so on may exist to prevent the government from attaining too much power; but let's get real. Governments are corrupted all the time. The only true way to end corrupt is to inform the people so they may vote out the corrupt and vote in the those who truly want to govern without power-hungry gain.

If you say big government is the problem an local government is solution, sorry it is not, Local government can become just as corrupt has big central governments, an it even easier to for them to do so. Generally they have even less oversite an less people making sure the is not corruption.

I personally think one world government would not be a bad thing, never gonna happen but I think realistically with communications an travel times becoming ever shorter it the only way to go.

I how ever think the current instituitions an how they are structured in in major reforms.
The EU needs to actually focus on getting its accounts signed of by accountants once a while. The UN need to abolished the 5 members security council an veto powers, which have not been use wisely by anyone.

I can only comment on Britain, an I can tell local government here is uesless, spend at least 3 forms, 40 emails, 10 phones, 3 hoursin the office to sort out council tax bill, had a similiar problem with income tax, which I underpaid took a five minutes phone , an it was sorted, an from what I have seen local government tend to focus on winning the elections rather governing,, central government is less so an so they get more things done an I tend not have to wait for as long to get things done with central government either. That is my experience with the two different kinds of government in the UK, one useless, an one reasonable able an descent.

The capitol of the world would depend on who the leading superpower of the planet was when aliens came a'knocking. Also, I think it would depend on how we chose to characterize ourselves as a planet (cultural, militaristic, diplomatic).

If we were a cultural planet, I believe the capitol would be located somewhere with a great deal of Romantic history, such as Paris or Rome. Probably Italy, since it was once the seat of the Roman Empire, and all the culture it boasted.

If we were militaristic, at this point I'd say it would be in the USA, since we are currently huge advocators of warfare.

If we were diplomatic, I'd say it would have to somewhere like Sweden or New York, where the UN is situated.

If we chose to a port planet, I think our capital would be in China somewhere. Don't ask me why. That's just what my mind jumps to when I think commercialism and port city.

Geneva was the seat of goverment in Babylon 5. For those countries that were members of the Earth Alliance. So Geneva has my vote.
But in the 'Bounty' series of books I read by William C Dietz. The capital of the world was bulit on what used to be Detriot and Chicago in the United States.
