Don't mention it, Jenova, it was entirely my pleasure!

'Houses of the Holy' is one of my top three episodes of the whole show. I really like their approach towards the topic, also Father Gregory and Father Reynolds were very likeable characters. The episode touched my heart and it was a really good idea to have both brothers struggle with their conviction/faith. The one who believes is disappointed because he thinks he's proven wrong while the skeptic wavers in his denial of some higher power being there because of what he witnessed. They both got plenty to think about afterwards.

It's good to see that neither of them is really proven wrong or right at the end; everything's open to interpretation. The episode doesn't give the answer to whether there is a God who cares about what happens down on Earth, and it also doesn't give the answer as to the question of the avenging angels. Father Gregory really was a spirit but it's still not proven whether God's intentions on smiting the wicked aren't accurate nonetheless.

Furthermore, I clearly appreciated that this episode's spirit wasn't evil in any way. He never even wanted to hinder Father Reynolds from giving him the last rites and finally putting him to rest.

Plus, Dean and Sam's differing perspectives were very well in character and made a lot of sense. Dean was skeptic because underneath he was still the hurt and disappointed four-year-old who missed his mother, who had witnessed firsthand that there had been no greater good to save her and prevent the whole family from being torn apart. Much like his father, Dean looks at the world and sees only evil lurking in the shadows.

On the other hand there is Sammy, still a bit of a naive, idealistic dreamer, who, even after everything that has happened and that he's seen, believes in the greater good, both within men and within the world in general. He simply isn't ready to give up believing that there is also a lot of good in the world and the light actually has a chance of winning over the darkness. He is afraid of what his alleged destiny has in store for him but he definitely hasn't despaired yet. And this is reflected in his ability to have faith in God while Dean doesn't. But I think it's also testament to the fact that Sam never consciously experienced the loss of his mother. He has no memory of her, no real connection to the young wowan he only knows from pictures. (I think this also shows in the fact that I always had the impression that Sammy hated the YED more for killing Jessica than his mother. He KNOWS of his mom and is aware of what happened but he only every FELT the loss for his girlfriend, drawing the connection that it was about the same as with Mary, yet never being able to really FEEL it the same way.)

All in all, 'Houses of the Holy' left me with a deep sense of peace and contentment. This is so much an episode to watch over and over again!

Okay, I'm done with my indepth musings, you can open your eyes again or you'll miss the pics...

In 'Devil's Trap' I rather had the impression that the boys headed to Bobby's because they knew he could help, not because they were afraid Meg was after Bobby too. Since Bobby was a demon expert and they were in desperate need for help regarding beating Meg and getting back their father, it was the logical choice for them to head to the Bobby's junkyard.

I do agree, however, that the three of them (Jared, Jensen and Jim) kicked it off right away chemistry-wise. It was obvious from the get-go that Bobby was very fond of the boys and used to be a friend and ally for their dad.
Well, to be fair I didn't think that was the only reason they headed to Bobby's - because they were worried Meg was after him. I do agree that they went there because they thought he could help, but I wouldn't be surprised if a tiny part of it was because they thought Meg was going to come after him (I can't remember the exact line, but I think it was something Dean had said as they were driving over there that made me think that... I'll look it up cause I can't remember it at the moment).

But yeah, I do agree that they hit it off right away chemistry-wise.

So true. My heart also ached for how much Sam is afraid of not being able to prevent what was in store for him. Worst of all though is my impression that the danger of what he might become doesn't really lie within his own power but rather to what he is pushed by others and through tough circumstances. I mean, how long will he take all the sh!t from people like Gordon and his goons before he starts actively defending himself before anyone has the chance to hurt him?

And I don't even want to go into detail about the despair he must feel about Dean's crossroads deal. In 'Playthings' Dean promised he wouldn't be dying because of Sam, wouldn't leave him behind. Now we all know how close Dean is to sticking to this promise. As it is,
        Spoiler:
"bleeding-heart Sammy" is at the verge of losing his brother, the last of his entire family, going to Hell for eternity, because of him no less, he's forced into a demon war that he doesn't even want to fight since he craves nothing more than a sense of normalcy, which, after having gotten to know the YED's plans for him, is seemingly forever out of his reach, there's a bunch of demons who are trying to chase him down to "rightfully" put him onto the throne like ol' Yellow Eyes intended for him, and the rest is trying to sadistically get rid of him because they view him as a threat to their own regal ambitions. And after Dean is gone, he stands against the dark forces all alone, with no one to watch his back or reassure him that he isn't the monster demons and hunters alike see him as. If that isn't screwed to hell, I don't know what is. And there are people who keep wondering why Sam has changed so much over the course of the last couple of months...
Wow... yeah, I totally agree with all of that. What he must be going through over that crossroads deal. I mean, in AHBL Pt. 2, you could see he was upset after Dean first told him, the way he said "how you could make that deal?" and then vowing to get Dean out of this.

All that said, it's been quite a journey for Sam.

That's such a classic Bobby scene! Simply loved how Sammy and Dean tenderly apologized to each other over the rooftop of the Impala and then Bobby interrupting in his usual ruff demenour that they really should beat it instead of dragging out the chick flick moment right in front of the crime scene.
Yeah, it was... I always get a kick out of that scene

Oh, I didn't doubt it at all. I just had heard that they were still in negociations about him taking the lead role, so I wasn't sure whether it was confirmed that the deal was already set in stone. I had read about it at imdb, which is really quite reliable regarding such things. And now that Jared Padalecki had to cancel Asylum convention in the UK due to scheduling conflicts with shooting the movie, I guess all doubt is removed.
I hear ya. Yeah, I think that removed all doubt once he had to cancel his Asylum con appearance.

Well, according to an interview with his fiancee, JP seems to like doing exactly that kind of movies. Since she scared easy, she whined about him enjoying to drag her along and watch the films at the premiers. (tsk, tsk, tsk, what a naughty trait...)
LOL! Yes I read that interview... he really is a naughty boy, isn't he.

Yes, thanks for the links, I was dying to have a look at some convention pics. And I too am contented with his hair. But to be honest, anything else would have surprised me. IF they are ever going to cut his hair short for whatever reason, they certainly won't have JP come back after a hiatus with that new haircut.

Apropos LA convention, did you see pics and vids from Jensen Ackles' Sam impersonation on stage? What a great impression of his on-stage brother he gives. The faces and hunched-over shoulders are too close to home! Seems like Jared Padalecki also got a good laugh out of his co-star's take on his mannerisms.

Here you can find a few great pics from that.

And this is the link to one of the vids (from a great perspective).

Now that this post has taken on gigantic proportions in itself, I'll throw in the pic spam with the next two posts.
No problem. I know what you mean... before I saw them I was still a bit concerned about the way they talked about him being "allowed" to cut his hair now at the Chicago con. But I guess they were just joking... hopefully.

Yes, I saw those!! I was cracking up so badly when I first saw them... Jensen was priceless doing that. Thanks for the links!

Will be back to catch up a bit more soon... it's quitting time here at work, so I'll be back here after I return home.

This night I was just too much enjoying 'Houses of the Holy' to let you off the hook of my snurching frenzy I broke into once I had finished watching. Sammy made so many cute faces in that ep, I just couldn't resist, they always make me want to melt with bliss.

Yay!!! I adored both parts of course and I just HAD to repost this pic like Jenova did... what an adorable puppy!! *sigh*

Also enjoyed reading your thoughts on that episode. Pretty much sums up all that I like about it. I too liked the idea that the spirit (Father Gregory) wasn't evil in any way. And yes, I think the episode did a good job of highlighting the different perspectives that Sam and Dean had when it comes to faith and such.

I always enjoy reading your musings, Twinny And viewing your pics, of course

Speaking of puppies, I did a picspam over at my LJ:

I'm going to do one for each episode, so this first one is for the Pilot. The quality of the pics isn't too great, mostly because the image enhancer thingie on Photoshop is a little messed up... but at any rate I hope it makes you smile.

Ha, wonderful pics to come back to! Thank you very much for brightening my day like that. I especially loved the doggy pics and the 'Pilot' picspam, I hope you don't mind my intense snurching... *begs pretty please*

But you certainly won't find me returning to this thread empty-handed. I watched 'Faith' tonight, nothing special IMHO but a good, solid episode. Most memorable moments for me:
                          a) When Dean says to Sam right at the beginning that there was nothing he could do for his big brother and Sam answered, "Watch me." That was so the right spirit to approach the problem, and later in hindsight you can already see the same determination with which Sammy is now trying to get Dean out of his deal, though Sam has obviously become a lot more desperate by now.

                          b) Dean berating Sam for taking him to a faith healer instead of a doctor and Sam correcting Dean that he said "specialist".

                          c) Roy (the faith healer) revealing to Dean that he was chosen because he still had an important mission to fulfill.

And last but clearly not least d) Leyla telling Dean that the real faith was believing when the miracles don't happen. (No truer words have ever been uttered.)

Puppy dog eyes in full force! It's a wonder the doctor didn't melt from pity.
                          Spoiler:

Hehe, such a neat treat to have Sammy run in his socks in the motel room.
Good call from the wardrobe department.

I really like Dean wearing the hoodie with that jacket. Looks terrific!

I felt so sad for Sammy when Dean ranted about not having wanted anyone to die in his stead and that they shouldn't have come there in the first place, then Sam's soft reply of "I didn't know."
The sorrow in his eyes told the story that he was sorry too that someone died because of Dean's healing but he would certainly never regret his brother's survival.

I clearly liked Julie Benz in her guest spot here. Leyla was a very likeable character.
I was so sorry she wasn't saved.

And a cutie from behind the scenes...

Were the pics within the cave too dark? I was just wondering why you didn't have any caps from where he found Dean and protected the group when the wendigo came after them. That was so neat to see him stand in front of all others trying to protect the others from the wendigo, and then big brother Dean came to the rescue...

You know, I've heard a lot of opinions on why Daddy Winchester never answered that call. What do you think?

I believe that John was out of reach and didn't get the voicemail until later, and when he checked it out, Sam had already managed to get Dean better. In my humble opinion Daddy really does care what happens/happened to his sons. I'm sure he didn't just let that message pass because it was all the same to him and he didn't care whether Dean lived or died. Even if he didn't reveal himself to the boys, I'm sure he looked into it as soon as he got to know what went down. After all, John also went to look after Sammy and Dean in 'Home', although they never knew he was there too.

I'm aware that some people think he just showed up in 'Home' because he thought it might have to do something with the YED, and the mention of this demon was the only thing that brought him back to Laurence, and later in 'Shadows', and there is really no argument against it since we can't realy know for sure what his motives were but I'm convinced otherwise. I believe John really loved his kids and would have done anything to protect them, only he was preoccupied with other things.

Because I've worked so much over the past two days, I didn't have time to watch 'Supernatural' but I still have a secret stash of goodies for you. Ah, thank you, Twinny! I *heart* the puppy dog eyes.

Yeah, the cave pics were very dark. I do have quite a few of them from the cave, but the main reason I didn't include them was because he didn't really appear very puppy-ish. But here is an example from that scene:

See, it's pretty dark. I think that's probably the best cap I got of that whole scene in the cave. I did love seeing him like that, though, trying to protect the others from the wendigo till Dean came to the rescue.

I tend to think that John was out of reach/busy when he received the call, too. I doubt that he wouldn't care what happened to Dean. I think when/if he heard the message, he would be pretty worried. But like you said, I wouldn't doubt that Sam had managed to get Dean better before he could do anything.

And I know it was almost 2 episodes after Home, but he also called Sam at the end of Asylum/beginning of Scarecrow. I know it was because he wanted to give them the info for the next hunt (asking them to take down the names of victims of the scarecrow, if I remember correctly), but I have to wonder if what Missouri told him at the end of Home struck a cord with him? When she said something like "John Winchester, when are you gonna see your boys?" Not that I don't think he didn't love them anyway, but I was wondering what made him decide to call them.

I do think that his motives had something to do with the YED when Dean said they were back in Laurence, but maybe not totally. I'd bet part of it was because he loved his sons and would have wanted to see them... but then I think again about what Missouri said. I guess I'm kind of on the fence, so to speak. But I wouldn't doubt that has something to do with it (his love for them), and I don't think anything can convince me that he *doesn't* love them and want to protect them.

Because I've worked so much over the past two days, I didn't have time to watch 'Supernatural' but I still have a secret stash of goodies for you.
