Faran Tahir breaks barriers as a new starship captain in Star Trek

Faran Tahir, a Pakistani-American actor, has the distinction of playing Captain Robau, the first Federation starship captain of Middle-Eastern (well, South Asian) ethnicity, in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek and told SCI FI Wire the honor isn't lost on him.

In this, Tahir is the latest in a long line of ethnic actors who have taken on color-blind roles in Trek, which has had a tradition going back to the original series and creator Gene Roddenberry of imagining a future where every person lives up to his or her fullest potential, regardless of race or ethnicity.
    (Possible spoilers ahead!)

Regarding Star Trek star`Leonard Nimoy upcoming role in Fringe, he said "Several answers will come outside of William Bell, and then William Bell will be the beginning of the answers to even bigger questions,"

About Nimoy return to the role of Spock in the upcoming Trek movie, he said "It's not just a cameo; it's a significant role, and it plays an important part of the story," he said. "He's not in every scene - it's not that kind of thing. It was nice to see some people saying that they were surprised that even though we said that, it truly was."

Karl Urban on the Kirk-Spock-McCoy Relationship and Watching TOS DVDs

NZHerald posted a new interview with actor Karl Urban, the new McCoy, and here are few excerpts

Did you look at the earlier but older Dr McCoy from the TV series for reference points?

Two years before I found out they were making Star Trek, they released these DVD box sets and I got them and started watching them with my son. He was in hysterics - he loved them but was laughing at things like the posters of star systems up on the bridge. For the new generation of kids who are so clued up on technology it seems a bit archaic, but what was interesting to see was how drawn in he became because it was character-driven.

In my opinion Star Trek was always a cult of personality before science fiction. You wanted to see the conflict between the characters - the grouchy, irascible Dr McCoy argue with the rational, logical Spock, and see the hero, James T. Kirk make a decision and then go and bone the green girl. To me, that's what was most intriguing about it - the fact it was a character-driven show with such strong personalities. Reading the script for this reboot I was thrilled to see they had held on to that.

The character is a bit cranky isn't he?

This character is irascible and cantankerous, and often downright grumpy but beneath that is one of the most altruistic, caring, loyal friends you can possibly have. The remarkable thing about him is he does not care who you are, he will speak his mind. His moral perspective, regardless of who he is arguing against, is always sound. It doesn't matter that he's more Jim Kirk's friend than Spock's - he will always give you the straight up, honest ground.

Why do you think he's so cantankerous?

I think he's a little bit bipolar actually!

TrekMovie.com Review of JJ Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ April 12, 2009

Although TrekMovie has grown to be the most popular general Trek news site and we now cover all aspects of the franchise, it was born in 2006 in the wake of the Paramount announcement of bringing Star Trek back to the big screen. JJ Abrams’ Star Trek movie represents what could be a make or break moment for the franchise, at a time when it has seen better days. So it was with much excitement and trepidation that I sat down to finally see the film a couple of days ago. My full review is below. [Review is almost entirely SPOILER FREE]

I have always liked Karl Urban. I certainly hope he continues to play Bones in future Star Trek movies.
