An infamous character from DC Comics, Maxwell Lord, is coming to Smallville and IGN TV has learned who'll be playing him.

Gil Bellows, best known for his role on Ally McBeal, will portray the ruthless businessman, whose complicated history in the comics had him backing the Justice League during their Justice League International days, only to be revealed as a villain in recent years -- beginning with his murder of Blue Beetle. More recently, after being killed by Wonder Woman, the comic book incarnation of Lord was resurrected as a Black Lantern.

Bellows, who was seen in 24: Redemption, will appear on the nineteenth episode of Smallville: Season 9, called "Charade." We've also learned that Bellows' role on Smallville may potentially be a recurring one – which sounds to us like another sign that a tenth season of Smallville is looking increasingly likely.

        Lex returning to Smallville?

The Superman Homepage received word that Brian Doherty, who was just this month promoted to svp, national sales, at The CW has revealed that the execs at The CW are excited about a 10th season for "Smallville", wanting to really "go out with a bang". The word is that they're attempting to close a deal with Michael Rosenbaum to return as Lex Luthor, wanting to sign him up for at least 9 or 10 episodes.
        And also:

Question: Crazed fans like myself desperately need an update on Smallville's renewal. How's it looking? Any idea what the hold-up is? Ausiello: It's looking really, really good. And the hold-up is due to boring stuff like contracts and money.
I hope they can convince AM to stay for one more season.

Al Septien & Turi Meyer To Write The Finale

Al Septien & Turi Meyer, writers of last week's "Conspiracy" episode, will be writing the season finale of Smallville, as revealed by Turi Meyer on his Twitter page.

This could be a good sign - if this were a series finale, wouldn't that mean that it would be written by showrunners Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders?

Greg Beeman Returns To Direct The Smallville Season Finale!

KryptonSite has learned exclusively that Greg Beeman, the man responsible for developing the "look" of Smallville as well as directing many of the series' best episodes, will be returning to direct the show's ninth season finale.

Beeman departed Smallville after Season 5 and later worked on the Aquaman pilot before spending three years as one of the main directors of Heroes. Most recently he worked on Melrose Place.

Ruth in Boise, Idaho: Is it true Gil Bellows is coming to Smallville? I loved him on Ally McBeal!
Yes, he is, and he is still evil (though not because of a brain tumor this time--sigh, remember those days?!). He's playing Maxwell Lord for two episodes this season, per my sources. Hey, maybe he can go replace Rob Lowe on Brothers & Sisters and be Calista's new squeeze?

Question: Any juicy tidbits for the rest of the season on Smallville? —David
Ausiello: Clark and Zod will have an inevitable (and rather spectacular) showdown before the end of the season. And look for Lois and Perry to team up on the Kandorians story.

                              Smallville: The Justice Society Returns?

An tip from Andy came to us with a very interesting tidbit from DC Comics’ Geoff Johns regarding the Justice Society, at this weekend’s Emerald City Comic Con:

Here’s what Johns said: “They do appear again at the end of season on ‘Smallville.’ The hope is for every DC character to appear outside the comic book. Correctly.”

Could this be a big spoiler for the current season finale?

UPDATE: Apparently Johns also said not to expect a Green Lantern appearance on the show. Boo! Still cool to hear that they [may] be coming back.
