I recommend chartreuseian as well. She's an excellent write. And again the same word of warning: Pay attention to the rating!

Heya I wonder if someone, hmm, more Gimp/Photoshop oriented () person would be willing to help me with a cover image for a ff story?

Every time I open Gimp I last about 5 minutes before I want to throw my computer out of the closest window and jump on what is left of the poor machine But it would be nice to get a cover image anyway... probably would be good for my hit stats too.

Hehe, tutorials... I rarely get far enough to actually read a tutorial But I don't get to whom they are written for. Whatever information I'm trying to find, it is never there.

I'm doing some super simple photo manipulation for my thesis (fitting many pics to one big pic to save space and make comparing easier) and I use layers to name the images... Horrible job. I spend 30 minutes every time to find that stupid layer tool.

I admire people who have patience to use Photoshop or similar programs!

taking a small poll, I need a new abnormal for a story idea. Right now I'm leaning toward a nocturnal cousin of the ferrolump.

Ideally humanoid, but with something obviously out of place,
preferably something from old old legends (Harpy Leprechaun ECT)
              possibly nocturnal
              Absolutely NO mind-reading
Also anything else you might think is too much power (telepathy, x-ray vision, invincibility) I would like to hear, or something you would like to see (flying, supersonic hearing, )

              Thanks

I would certainly recommend chartreuseian, She is a wonderful writer. Her multichapter fics are gripping so they seem to fly by and her one shots are sweet. One thing though ALWAYS check the rating.

Ratings usually don't help in my experience. People will write "acceptable for all audiences" and it's usually mind-scarring. I'll check this one out though, thanks .

Failing it all I should try to write my own.

ive seen that too people put K or K+ and then there's questionable language or situations and its like "This should be in T at least. " but Chartreuseian understands the rating system.

If you do write something I would like to see it. I promise I wont flame.

BTW if I mislabel anything for any reason feel free to flame me. Do we have any reason to think the 5 can cook?

I'm torn on Magnus. My first instinct is to say yes, of course, she was raised in a time when women were expected to be in the kitchen! But that's a wildly uninformed knee jerk reaction. I mean, in Victorian times, the women in Magnus' class of society *ran* the household. From appearances in the webisodes and flashback scenes, the Magnus family was fairly affluent, perhaps mid-upperclass bourgeois-- certainly wealthy enough to hire staff to handle that sort of thing. Even if she'd clung to the gender role expectations of that era (which she certainly did not), she would have been receiving guests and directing the staff and mingling with the rest of society, not toiling away in the kitchen and polishing silver.

Does that mean she wouldn't have studied cooking later in her long life? Not necessarily. Personally, I think she does know her way around the kitchen. To me, the culinary arts is a sensual affair, and Magnus is nothing if not the epitome of sensuality. And of course, I love the idea of Helen and Ashley bonding over a batch of chocolate chip cookies in the kitchen late one night, giggling and stealing nibbles of fresh cookie dough.

But then, one might argue that Magnus isn't perfect, and cooking is a skill that always eluded her. When it became clear she wouldn't improve beyond burning toast, she moved on to more productive endeavors.

So I could go either way on Magnus. Though I lean towards at least a mediocre skillset towards cooking. And I find it unlikely that she's lived 260+ years without at least dabbling in it.

Of the others, I think Watson is the most likely to have learned to cook. He always seemed to be the type to be an all-around scholar, a true renaissance man. He would take the time to truly study it, maybe shadow some of the greats when he went on holiday. He would be creative in devising new recipes, and he would appreciate the craft behind it.

I doubt Nikola would have had the patience for it. If anything, he learned it to seduce women, but the way his character is established on the show, he seems more likely to take a woman to a lavish restaurant than to cook her something himself.

John I think would know how to cook, even way back when he first knew Magnus. I have a vision of him presenting breakfast to Helen in bed. It's an image that's grossly anachronistic, but way back then he was a hopeless romantic. And even in the later years he was always (mostly) tender towards Helen.

Nigel, no. I don't think he can cook, or feel any compulsion to do so. He might be able to scrounge something together in a pinch, but I seriously doubt he undertook anything gourmet. He always seemed like a no-frills kind of person, in contrast to the rest of the Five.

That's my two cents. I'd be happy to engage in deeper discussion on the topic. This was a very interesting question.

I don't think it's ever been mentioned in the series. But I would think it would be safe to assume that if they didn't know before, that as bachelors over many years Nikola, John & James would have had to learn (it would be proper meals too, not a quick microwave meal). I just don't see them popping into a fast food restaurant for meals, though Nikola is the type to dine in fancy restaurants on a regular basis.

I can kind of see Helen and James learning for the sake of knowing how to cook they were all sort of 'Well to do' I think and could afford to have a personal chef. I would think they would treat it as a chemistry experiment. Basically that's all most cooking is.

True, very true! I learned that very thing again today. I put too much red pepper flakes in the pasta sauce...
