NBC's Heroes Will Fly Again, but Knight Rider Is Out of Gas

Some of this TV season's "bubble shows" are starting to pop, while others continue to ride the fence — or even safely hop off.

Case in point: Despite sagging ratings and amid backstage upheavals, Heroes will fight another day. The Peacock's onetime pride and joy is likely to return in the fall for 18 to 20 episodes, NBC entertainment president Angela Bromstad told the Hollywood Reporter, though an actual pick-up order has yet to be placed.

One thing playing in Heroes' favor is that it performs well for NBC overseas. "Every single place you go has heard about Heroes — whether you're in China or Japan or Russia," Bromstad notes. (Are Peter and Nathan subtitled when Heroes plays in Tokyo? Discuss.)

Heroes could be paired on Mondays with Day One, a serialized drama pilot about the survivors of a catastrophic event.

On the other hand, Knight Rider will not be returning for another spin in the fall, sources tell TVGuide.com. The reboot of 1980s series drew just 5.76 million viewers with its Wednesday-night finale, a 21 percent drop-off from its September premiere. And this despite some retooling along the way.

An NBC rep had no comment on KITT's rumored garaging.

'Heroes' gets renewed for season 4

Heroes will return to fight another day. NBC's entertainment president, Angela Bromstad, told The Hollywood Reporter that the network plans to order 18-20 episodes for next season, the show's fourth. The announcement erases concerns that the action series, which has failed to recapture its season 1 buzz or ratings, might be canceled. So far this season, Heroes ranks 56th in the Nielsen ratings, but is tied with The Office as the network's top-rated series among adults 18-49.

Heroes to get fixed end date??

The article (about the season 4 renewal) also mentions that NBC may be considering an end date for the show ala Lost, where the show would be guaranteed a set number of seasons before it wraps up with a final year, thus allowing the producers and writers to move toward that end game in their storyline. If they do decide to go this route, the article says that this upcoming fourth season would not be that end date. This means the show would be guaranteed additional seasons beyond number four.

                  Panettiere denies wanting Ventimiglia fired
                  Friday, March 13 2009, 12:14 GMT

                  By Lara Martin, Entertainment Reporter

Heroes star Hayden Panettiere has denied claims that she attempted to get ex-boyfriend Milo Ventimiglia axed from the NBC show.

The actress, who plays Claire Bennet, was reported to have wanted Ventimiglia, who portrays her on-screen uncle Peter Petrelli, kicked off the drama following their split last month.

However, speaking to OK!, the 19-year-old dismissed the rumours, saying: "Milo and I are very close. We have enjoyed and continue to enjoy working together."

Meanwhile, show creator Tim Kring has assured fans that the relationship between Panettiere and Ventimiglia would not affect how he developed storylines for the rest of the season.

"The final decision about which characters live and die on Heroes rests with me," he insisted. "I've made no announcement yet as to who will return and who won't."

                    Two 'Heroes' stars land pilots
                    Tuesday, March 17 2009, 09:39 GMT

Heroes stars Nick D'Agosto and Noah Gray-Cabey are each cast in new pilots.

D'Agosto - best known for his role as West Rosen - will star in NBC's untitled Justin Adler comedy alongside former Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum.

The project, which revolves around a grown-up family, will see D'Agosto star as the youngest sibling who brings his girlfriend to meet his parents.

Gray-Cabey, Heroes' Micah, is cast in ABC's performance-arts drama Limelight, which centres on teachers and students at a New York performing arts academy.

He will be joining Oded Fehr, Kyle Riabko and Jessy Schram for the soap pilot.

                      'Heroes' exclusive: HRG speaks!

It's been a tough couple of years for Heroes. After a phenomenally successful first season, its shortened second year came in for criticism for being slowly paced. The current season has been panned for the opposite reasons, after a series of complicated and punchy plotlines left many a viewer confused. But in recent episodes, with season one writer Bryan Fuller back on board, its fortunes have begun to turn. I caught up with Jack Coleman - aka goodie-baddie Noah Bennet/HRG - at last weekend's Memorabilia convention in Birmingham to get the inside scoop.

TV’s Biggest Moneymaking shows according to Forbes and TNS has Heroes making more than House

Forbes ran a story a couple of days ago that ranked which shows make the most money solely based on advertising spending estimates from TNS at the end of January. Some of the results will surprise you (and me). It has 24 leading the pack, and Heroes, Survivor, CSI, Extreme Makeover, and Worst Week (yes, that Worst Week) all ahead of House, even though House has the much better demo numbers of all of those shows (even 24!).

Based on the estimated cost per 30 second advertising spot, they came up with revenue per 30 minutes so that 30 minute shows could be easily compared.
While the article does go into some disclaiming the truth of it is you can concoct these sorts of lists with estimates any way you want, and come up with rankings. Because there is no way to quantify or validate the numbers because the networks aren’t going to release any of the actual results.

Although I think it’s a certainty that House is making more on advertising revenue for 30 second spots than Heroes is (or was, even on January 31), it’s not really different than Jeff Zucker talking about how well NBC manages the margins. Because we’ll never actually know! We won’t wind up seeing any data about how well the broadcast network manages margins. You will never see anything but rough estimates since it is grouped within NBC Universal in any of GE’s reporting.

I don’t fault Forbes or TNS, but like horoscopes, it is the sort of thing that should probably be used for entertainment purposes only.
