    EXCERPT:

The following post discusses "Daybreak," the final episode of "Battlestar Galactica."

First up, there's an interview with executive producer Ronald D. Moore. There's also material from a discussion of the finale that occurred on Monday, after the last episode was screened for the press. Moore, executive producer David Eick and stars Mary McDonnell and Edward James Olmos answered some questions after that screening.

There are also a few remarks from an interview I did with McDonnell after the show was the subject of a panel discussion at the United Nations.

The final part is my thoughts on the finale. If you even get that far, you get a special prize: My eternal esteem.

Is Lucy Lawless the only actor not reprising her role in the Cylon gang for "The Plan"? That is dreadful!

Will there be a "New Generation" for Battlestar Galactica? — Sheryl

MICKEY: What the frak, Sheryl?! They just made it to "Earth." Give them a little time to craft tank tops from gazelle hides and figure out which animalistic grunt will be considered a broadcast-safe profanity. In the meantime, we'll see the BSG miniseries The Plan, which will fill in some Final Five backstory from a Cylon perspective, in the fall. The prequel series Caprica won't debut until 2010, but you can buy the pilot episode on DVD next month, at which time hopefully we'll learn why Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales are always wearing fedoras.

            Meanwhile, just FYI….
Are CSI's Wendy and Hodges ever going to get more face time? Together? — Angelic

TIM: They will indeed. In a Battlestar-studded April episode, as they investigate a murder at a sci-fi convention, Wendy and Hodges discover their mutual love for a classic series. I don't know which one, but this feels like a setup for the backdoor pilot CSI: Enterprise.

The best (and worst) online comments about the Battlestar Galactica finale

Did you think last Friday's Battlestar Galactica finale was frakkin' awesome? Or just plain frakked up? Either way, you're not alone, as critics, bloggers and fans have spent the past week debating the meaning of the series' last moments.

Some thought the crew's farewell was perfect, some cringed, while others came down somewhere in between. Here's a sampling of the choicest quotes about BSG's swan song--the good, the bad and the mixed.

But what about you? Agree? Disagree? Since there's no new episode to watch tonight, now's the perfect time to weigh in with what you think.

              The Good

"The most politically engaging, culturally relevant, socially entertaining and spiritually rewarding experience I had this past week was watching the two-hour finale of Battlestar Galactica ... it ranks among the best—if not the best—of all series grand finales. With the loss this year of Battlestar, unquestionably one of the top ten one-hour drama series ever, along with ER and, next year, Lost, the age of great long-running television dramatic series is coming to an end.

              The Huffington Post

"It felt much like the end of a great party. Maybe someone had a little too much to drink and knocked over a lamp (I'm looking at you, Saul!). Maybe someone caught their man making out with another girl (I know it hurts Athena, but it's not like he wasn't thinking of you the whole time) and maybe someone got in a fight (Starbuck, save it for the ring!) but at the end of night, you know you had a blast."

              ugo.com

"What a frakking amazing ending! As I was watching and saw them all gearing up for the assault, I realized that we were only 45 minutes in! Epic on all scales. Perfectly fitting way to end the show. I'm so glad they didn't kill everyone or just turn out the lights. The future I felt was a good twist because it really epitomizes the BSG concept of 'It will happen once, it will happen again.' Brilliant!"

              slashfilm.com

"Battlestar Galactica, a visually grim and philosophically dark series for the duration of its run, had no obligation to end with twittering birds, romantic curlicues and happy, healing Helo. It was a gift, then, that it ended on such a triumphal, thoughtful note, and for that gift plus the entirety of four epic years with this great story, we offer a sincere and hearty thank you to the creators, cast and crew."

              E! Online

"It resolutely delivered what all great series finales should: a sense of closure befitting the emotional investment we've all made in these characters. We've been through living hell with them—four seasons of nihilism, desperation and flickering candlelight hopes snuffed out one after the other. Let no one say this ride into the sunset wasn't earned. And they did it without falling unduly into maudlin sentiment."

              mania.com

              The Bad

"I HATED it! Hated. It. It just all felt like such lazy writing, as if the writing staff decided to have their wrap-up party after writing the second-to-last episode, and then wrote the finale hung over. Instead of coming up with feasible and interesting explanations to tie up the loose plot points, they just explained it all away as being 'God's Plan.'"

              puntabulous.com

"BSG was the most overrated sci fi series ever. Horrible writing and directing. Way too much internal inconsistency, way too much passing around of the idiot ball to keep major characters alive, way too much passing around of the idiot ball to make the plot happen at all. People just plain didn't behave rationally at least 90 percent of the time."

              saysuncle.com

"For a show that constantly patted itself on the back for being risky and cutting edge, it went out on the most conventional of notions, and answered all the mysteries it raised by simply reconfirming a belief that most people, at least in this country, closely hold. It's all a part of God's plan and there are angels to guide us, show us the way."

              dorknation

"So the final end of all this, after fighting for their lives for several years across the galaxy, is the colonialists commit mass suicide by wandering off into the wilderness to explore a new and bountiful world until they die alone of exposure and starvation. That is just fracked up stupid."

              Ace of Spades HQ

"I'm pissed that Starbuck was an 'angel.' Yeah, it would have been tough to explain the dying and not dying thing, but having her just disappear is a cop-out on the scale of St. Elsewhere."

              Liberal Values

              The Mixed

"Tonight's Battlestar Galactica finale was a cop out, but it was also the perfect goodbye. Ron Moore dropped the ball on plot but as always, the show delivered where it really mattered: Characters."

              cinemanblend

"The finale, the entire show, was as it said humanity is: Noble but imperfect."

              Dean's World

"Was the Battlestar Galactica finale perfect? No. It had its clunky moments and some unnecessary diversions. And no, not every question was answered—and some that were answered did so in thoughtful, metaphysical ways that likely will vex some. But overall, this was a heartfelt and passionate conclusion to a show that has always done a remarkable job of portraying people at their most truthful; flaws and all."

              ign.com

"I have complaints—I always have complaints. But it was a satisfying, flawed, and complicated ending to a satisfying, flawed, complicated show."

              Alas! A Blog

"And then, the finale. It had its moments, but I nearly walked when it turned into a video game of chasing people and running through corridors endlessly. I stuck around for the end. Yes, it fell victim to some popular cliches (notably 'everyone's life is in incredible, incredible danger and yet almost no one dies'). It could have easily had 10 minutes edited out without any loss whatsoever (it ran about 10 minutes over 2 hours). I didn't hate it. It wasn't as strong as I hoped it would be, but it wasn't exactly weak either."

'BATTLESTAR GALACTICA' ACTORS SELECT KEY ITEMS TO BENEFIT CHARITIES FOR FINAL 'BATTLESTAR GALACTICA' LIVE AUCTION EVENT - MAY 8, 9 & 10 IN PASADENA, CALIF.
                                Published: May 4, 2009

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – May 4, 2009 – The final live auction event for SCI FI Channel's acclaimed drama "Battlestar Galactica" is set for May 8, 9 and 10 at the Pasadena Convention Center. Now that the series has concluded, NBC Universal Television, DVD, Music and Consumer Products Group and Propworx are offering hundreds of incredible costumes, props and set pieces from the hit show to fans and collectors in a three-day live auction, which will also stream live on Auction Network (www.auctionnetwork.com). A portion of the auction's overall profits will benefit United Way.

Grace Park ("Sharon Valerii"), Michael Trucco ("Samuel T. Anders") and Kate Vernon ("Ellen Tigh") have chosen items that are particular to their characters to auction for the benefit of their chosen charities.

During the auction preview day on Thursday, May 7, fans will also have a chance to hear the actors and several members of the production team talk about the making of the hit SCI FI Channel series and its dramatic conclusion. Just after the public preview session, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., Grace Park, Michael Trucco and Kate Vernon will discuss their work on "Battlestar Galactica" and then at 6:00 p.m., several of the production executives will discuss how they worked together to create the series, including Emmy-nominated and MPSE award-winning sound designer Daniel Colman, producer Harvey Frand, Emmy Award-winning VFX supervisor Gary Hutzel, co-producer Paul Leonard, the show's music composer Bear McCreary, award-winning director Michael Nankin, associate producer Andy Seklir, supervising producer/co-writer Bradley Thompson, supervising producer/co-writer David Weddle and Emmy Award-winning director Wayne Rose.

"We have really put together a fantastic experience for fans and collectors for this final auction," said Kurt Ford, Senior Vice President Production Services, Universal Media Studios. "Where else would you be able to get your photo taken in a life-size Viper, listen to the actors and production team talk about the making of this incredible program and see the items that made it come to life on screen, all in one place? We know that anyone who joins us for this auction in person, or on the Web, will not be disappointed and will have a chance to own a piece of a very unique show."

"We had great success in the last 'Battlestar Galactica' auction tying charities in with the actors," said Alec Peters, CEO of Propworx. "We are excited that each actor brings a different organization into the spotlight and that the proceeds of the actors items help their charity."

Grace Park starred as "Sharon Valerii," one of the most trusted members of the Battlestar Galactica fleet – until she was revealed as a deadly Cylon. Grace will offer one of the original "Sharon Valerii" flight suits to be auctioned off to benefit Harvest India (www.harvestindia.org), a humanitarian, non-profit organization based in southern India, which also functions as a non-profit ministry in the United States. Harvest India's 14 acre campus in India oversees several villages, orphanages, a nurse training center and several ministries.

Michael Trucco starred as the dashing "Samuel T. Anders" in the hit SCI FI Channel series – a former resistance leader on "Caprica" and "New Caprica" who fell in love and married "Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace" and became a Viper pilot on "Galactica." Michael will offer the proceeds from his "Anders" Caprica Buccaneers uniform to Food on Foot (www.foodonfoot.org), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing the poor and homeless of Los Angeles with nutritious meals, clothing and assistance in their transition to employment and a life off the streets.

Additionally, Kate Vernon, who starred as "Ellen Tigh," the beautiful but volatile wife of "Galactica's" "Colonel Saul Tigh," has chosen the "Saul & Ellen Tigh" wedding rings and "Ellen's" infamous blue dress from "No Exit," when she returns to "Galactica" in Season Four. These will be auctioned off to benefit the Entertainment Industry Foundation's Revlon Run/Walk For Women (www.revlonrunwalk.com). Already in its 16th year, the annual Revlon Run/Walk For Women benefits research and support service programs for women's cancers. The Los Angeles run/walk takes place May 9th. "Ellen," who was killed early in Season 3 for colluding with the Cylons, was later revealed in the final season to be the last of the original five Cylons.

But wait there's more! NBC Universal and Propworx will be offering hundreds of final items in a series of "Airlock" Auctions on eBay beginning Sunday, May 17th at 7:00 p.m. (PT). These auctions will run weekly through August 16th and will offer hundreds of the final items online. They can be accessed through www.battlestarprops.com.
