The thing is, eventually, the internet will become censored and controlled; much like how the Wild West was eventually turned from a no-man's land, with very little rules or regulations into a strict and law-abiding place.

The main problem is; governments will back laws such as these due the high demand from business, such as the entertainment industry, who'll donate ammounts of money to pass laws that discourage/ forbid piracy.

Now, these rules are already in place, though not strongly enforced due to the sheer inpracticality of stopping or hunting down everyone who can easily download anything they want to their computer. Passing these laws and forbiding people from accessing these sharing/ illegal download sights will only discourage people from piracy, yet people will still find a way around.

To counter this even futher, governments, with even more backing from wealthy companies looking to crack down on piracy, will come down with an iron fist.

Any number of possible scenarios could occur; I believe some country in East; South Korea, perhaps, only allows you to upload information/ comments and download files if you enter in a personal security code, unique to each person; allowing people to be easily traced and monitered, irradicating the anonymaty that people have online.

This is all a bit sketchily explained, but it's the gist of it; whether it's in 10, 20 or 50 years time; it's bound to happen. Governments will pass laws, backed by wealthy companies with their own agenda's; preventing people from accessing intellectual property and pirated entertainment.

From there it's a very slippery slope from just piracy to unfavourable sites and documents that those in power, and those who back them financially, reckon that their people don't need to see, and would be safer without.

Half the things you find on the Internet, you wouldn't be able to come across in other media outlets; such as newspapers, tv shows, magazines, etc. And there's a reason for that; it's only a matter of time before the Internet is put under the same restrictions and controls.

OK that is fair enough. But. Why then cant' the governments doing this be HONEST about why theyr'e doing it and instead come up with a crap excuse like "it's tro protect the children"

If they did that maybe we in the internet community and industry would probably support them.

BTW I don't think the humungous music and movie industry is really hurting that badly do you?

What has got them so spooked? Answer that and you will know why we are having things like this foisted on us I believe.
Because the idea of a free country is frankly a fool's idea and an illusion. For our citizenship we make a deal, we trade off certain liberties, in order to achieve stability and general safety. Governments then declare what we have the right to do. Now you can have a fairly liberal government, or an authoritarian government, but you will NEVER ever have a government that runs a truely free nation, because the very concept contradicts the idea of having a government at all.

And personally, as long as the government isn't totally authoritarian, I don't see a problem with this system. We shouldnt mind that we don't live in a free society, becauise a free society would actually be utter carnage.

          this^

want to protect children, don't let them use it. its a 'privilege' not a 'right'.

having said that, they can't stop game piracy so this is unlikely to work.

And in Australia the Victorian Government has been actively spying on protest groups.

Yeah but at least they are more upfront about that they do this.

I found out while reading discussion on Whirlpool about the filter that abortion websites are to be classified and listed as "unwanted content" and are now on the government blacklist of banned websites.

                  WTF?

Isn't it legal in this country?

So how can you ban websites that talk about a practice that is legal?

                  "thought control" anyone?

I'm convinced it scarred me for life. Something about people turning into orange blobs of goo or something, I don't think I ever quite recovered

I just got done taking classes/doing projects about government control...I would write up something worth adding to this discussion, but I'm sleepy

My short answer is No. You start opening the door for the government censoring the internet, and what's next? Where does it stop?

Has technology continues grow, these problems will only likely increase.

The sad thing is people are being "dumbed" down into letting the government make these decisions for them. The government feeds them information that child porn/bomb sites/terrorists are the reason sites are being censored, and the people go along with it feeling it's the right thing to do. This keeps on happening and increasing to other things in society, with the general population none the wiser that the rights they had are slowly fading away.

Just look at China for example. They block whatever they see fit. I read that they removed parts of Obamas inauguration speech, and cut to commercial when he spoke out against government control.

I don't know about any of you, but I wouldn't want to live in a place like that. Sadly, if the internet does become censored I feel we already have a foot in that direction.

Some would argue that we already live in a place like this.

I like to have my own opinion and I'd like to see on the Internet what I want to see or research or read. If they take that away, I lose my free will.

Thankfully I live in a country where that's not going to happen. If you don't like what you see click it away.

I don't have a problem that my workoffice puts filters on because you know I'm getting paid to actually work and not surf on the Internet but at home? I don't want to be resticted. I pay for surfing on the Internet.

It shouldn't be restricted to anyone.

As for the gaming and downloading stuff, well I work in a gaming store and I do find that games are very expensive and so therefor we sell second hand games for half the price and a lot of people find that a very good idea. On the other hand the gaming industry doesn't like that because they loose their income.

See no matter what you do, there will always be someone against it.

But that is just IMHO. To each their own!

But when you sell a second hand game you are still selling a product so aren't they still getting their money via royalties or whatever? Or am I missing something
