There is a difference between respect for someone as a human being, and respect for someone individually. It's my personal belief that we should respect someone until we are given a reason not to. What would the world be like if everyone was disrespectful to everyone else until we "earned it?" Frankly, I don't think anyone would be in a position to earn respect or demonstrate it in that kind of scenario.
