Review: Stargate Universe – Living Up to the Name!

    http://www.wormholeriders.com/blog/?p=2151

I admit, I was a little skeptical going in. I had no doubts that whatever the production team did, it was going to be their best. I believe they truly do have the power to turn anything they touch to gold. Their creativity and ingenuity, not to mention their dedication to and determination, seem boundless. They have inspired me time and time again, and have nothing but the highest regard for them and the deepest faith in their decisions

      SGU Preview

The October 2nd premiere of Stargate Universe is fast approaching, and more and more informati0n is becoming available every day. I’ve heard things like, “This is not your father’s Stargate.” Or, “This is a darker Stargate.” To be honest, my first reaction was, “OK, but we liked our father’s Stargate, at whatever level of light you call that.” That notion of a new, different Stargate puts a lot of pressure on the premiere. It makes this the most important debut from the Stargate family in a very long time.

Last week I said that Supernatural was so good that I wondered if any other premiere could match it. The two hour kick off to Universe doesn’t quite do it, but it gets very close. The first two hours manage the delicate balance of bringing new viewers into the Stargate world, while not feeling like a ‘Stargate for Dummies’ introduction to those that have already logged their 300 hours. And it does that while laying the groundwork for what has the possibility to be another great series.

Stargate: Universe” — A Slice of SciFi Review

Slice of SciFi Rating: 4.5 out of 5.0
Has potential to be the “DS9? of the “Stargate” franchise

Early on in the three-hour “Stargate: Universe” pilot, it becomes apparent this isn’t your daddy’s “Stargate” series. The greatest threat isn’t from an external threat like the Wraith or the G’ould but instead comes from the question of who you can and should try among a rag-tag group of humans thrown together on a distant starship, trying to find a way to survive and, possibly a way to get back home.

With the arrival of “Stargate: Universe,” the franchise takes a turn for a darker look into the universe of the Gate and also offers a series that could be more character driven than the previous two installments. It still has elements of that won over a legion of loyal “Stargate” fans, but it so far it appears that this entry isn’t willing to play it safe with the viewers or the characters.

          SGU Interview: Elyse Levesque

EXCERPT: CinemaSpy: How familiar were you with the Stargate franchise before taking the role?

Elyse Levesque: I'd heard of it. Being in Vancouver, it's one of the biggest shows shot here. I'd heard a lot about it but I didn't follow it.

CinemaSpy: How does your character fit with the ensemble that makes up Stargate Universe?

Elyse Levesque: My character on the show is a young woman named Chloe Armstrong. She is the resident fish-out-of-water. She comes from a very different lifestyle than a lot of the other Destiny crewmembers. She's the daughter and aid of a United States senator. She went to Harvard Law and majored in political science, and I think much of her life ran with the popular crowd, tried to fit the perceived persona of a senator's daughter. So when she comes on board the Destiny she's very much out of her element. None of the people were meant to be there, but at least they come equipped with a skill or mindset that allows them to deal with the situation. Chloe is just out of her element. For her it's a shock to the system. She has personal things which happen to her that she has to overcome and deal with and she needs to find a way to make herself useful on board the ship. Which is a huge issue for her, this sense of uselessness.

So far, so good with all these reviews. Even EW didn't say it was God's way of punishing humankind, which, when it comes to EW and their history with SG, is a great compliment.
My excitement has grown to dangerous levels. Thank God we're close to the finish(or is it starting) line, or I might have burst in another week or so.

Anderson 'may recur on 'Stargate Universe'

Richard Dean Anderson may become a recurring castmember on Stargate Universe, according to Robert Carlyle.

Earlier this year, co-creator Brad Wright confirmed that Anderson - best known as Jack O'Neill - will guest star on the latest Stargate spinoff alongside Gary Jones.

However, Carlyle, who plays Dr Nicholas Rush on Universe, has hinted that Anderson may appear more often than was previously announced.

                continues:

Sherwood Park actor beats Stargate jinx
Patrick Gilmore's third character in franchise is his first not to die early

by Jonn Kmech, Edmonton JournalSeptember 29, 2009 9:22 am

Being a casualty in deep space sucks--especially when you're an actor looking for a steady paycheque.
"I was in an episode of Stargate: SG-1, and I died," laughs Patrick Gilmore. "Then I was in an episode of Stargate: Atlantis a few years ago, and I died. And so when Stargate:Universe came around, I auditioned, got the part, and said to myself, 'Yeah, I'll do an episode and then I'll die.' "
Thankfully, Gilmore's days as a proud member of the Stargate body count are over. The 33-year-old Sherwood Park actor has landed a recurring role in the upcoming Space network series Stargate:Universe, the third live-action TV series in the Stargate franchise, which began with the 1994 cult film starring Kurt Russell and James Spader.
He portrays Dr. Dale Volker, a headstrong astrophysicist who clashes with the other stubborn scientists aboard the ship Destiny; the crew, using a stargate, beamed out to the vessel, which was lost in space, only to discover that it was a one-way trip. Unable to get home to Earth or pilot the ship, they explore nearby planets using the stargate's warping abilities.

                  Robert Carlyle: 'I wasn't a fan of SG-1'
                  Tuesday, September 29 2009, 8:40am EDT
Robert Carlyle has admitted that he was not a fan of the original Stargate series before landing a role on latest spinoff Universe.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, the 48-year-old Scottish actor, who previously starred as Francis Begbie in 1990s movie Trainspotting, revealed that he "hadn't really seen much" of SG-1 or Atlantis.

"It's funny," he said. "After I'd agreed to do the show and I got sent all the DVDs - two hundred f**king hours of SG-1 and all the rest of it! - I was surprised how much of it I had actually seen.

"I'd probably seen about 20 episodes of SG-1 over the years and I didn't see anything at all of Stargate Atlantis but that didn't seem to matter. This is a whole new deal, so I didn't have to sit and watch the whole back catalogue - that would have been a bridge too far!"

Stargate Universe -- An early look

EXCERPT: Universe –- a fine, scrappy show packed with great actors – might now be facing an uphill battle with some of its target audience members. Stargate fans unwilling to give the show a chance should know one thing: The franchise's spirit of adventure remains intact in the first three episodes of Universe. It is different and darker than Stargate: SG-1 and Atlantis – even blatantly dreary at times – but it's still Stargate.

The series stars David Blue as Eli Wallace, a pajama pants-wearing slacker genius who, by accident, unlocks the latest missing key to Stargate travel. As portrayed by Blue, Eli is a sardonic but loveable manchild who reacts with fanboy delight at the sight of the Stargate. Thankfully, the character is a lot less clichéd and grating than he sounds (and he's not just Rodney McKay minus fifteen years).

Stargate Universe star Robert Carlyle explores alternate realities from Vancouver base
                      By Alex Strachan

EXCERPT: VANCOUVER — “I’ve a feeling we’re not in Maryhill, Glasgow any more,’ Robert Carlyle must have thought to himself when he saw his first stargate on the main stage of Stargate Universe at Vancouver’s Bridge Studios. Stargate’s universe is worlds removed from his hometown of Glasgow, Scotland.

For a drama graduate of Glasgow Arts Centre who was inspired to act after reading Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Stargate, with its alternate realities and flights of sci-fi fantasy, must have seemed utterly alien to Carlyle. After all, he first came to the public’s attention playing a cold-hearted killer in the 1990’s U.K. TV crime classic Cracker opposite Robbie Coltrane. Then came the role of down-to-earth Scottish Highlands police officer Hamish Macbeth in the eponymous 1995-’97 BBC cult drama. He famously played the psychopathic Begbie in Danny Boyle’s film Trainspotting, then went on to roles in social dramas like Angela’s Ashes, The Full Monty and The Beach. He even played a villain in the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough.

"Where Will Destiny Take You?" "SGU" is Fresh, Sexy and Exciting!

                        EXCERPT:

The first and most important fact about SGU is that it is truly accessible to anyone. If you've never seen an episode of Stargate before, that's ok! Believe it or not, there is actually a crash course guide to the Stargate aboard the U.S.S General Hammond which is narrated by someone all Stargate fans love and know. Stargate Universe gives television viewers a fresh start to, no pun intended, the universe that is Stargate, without having to know about a single character from either series. Having said that, if you are a Stargate fan, you will instantly be sucked into this new creation by Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright. Along with all of the new faces, fans will quickly see some old faces like Jack O'Neill, Col. Carter and the beloved Daniel Jackson...oh and let's not forget about Walter.

Bringing an edgier, grittier and, for an outer space show at least, a more "realistic" take on the series, "SGU" follows a mix of soldiers, scientists and everyday Joe's who are forced to escape in a Stargate during an attack on their base. Unfortunately, they end up on an ancient ship on the other end of the universe unable to return to Earth and with resources dwindling.

In this exclusive clip, Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle of "Trainspotting") finds himself at odds with
