EXCERPT: This is what has taken Carlyle, in his 48th year, to Canada. Well, for the moment, anyway. He moved to Vancouver at the start of this year to film Stargate Universe, the latest spin-off from the franchise in which he plays lead scientist Dr Rush. In many ways it's a departure for Carlyle, away from his native Glasgow into the world of sci-fi and Canadian beach life. Following last year's 24: Redemption, a special addition to the series, and a previous stint playing Hitler in a mini-series for CBS, he is doing more television. The quality has increased, he points out, to the extent that there is no distinction anymore between film and TV, and he is in esteemed company with other Brits such as Tim Roth, Kevin McKidd and Hugh Laurie crossing the pond. Dr Rush, in any case, is as complex and Machievellian as any of the characters Carlyle has inhabited over the years. "Good, I like that," he says with a grin. "That'll do me."
He is missing Scotland ("the rainy days and the attitude"), as well as his wife, Anastasia, a make-up artist he met on the set of Cracker, and their three children, but he's not crying about it. "It was the right time for me to go," he says. "I had to do something different. I was getting bored with the problems in our industry. All those projects constantly falling apart. I couldn't be doing with it anymore." He starts talking about the anticipated film set in Edinburgh, The Meat Trade, which he is now convinced is never going to get off the ground. "I'll be 105 before it's f***ing made," he growls. "You've got Irvine Welsh writing the script, Antonia Bird directing, myself, Colin Firth, Samantha Morton acting… a lot of boxes ticked. So, you've got to think, what's the f***ing problem here?"
