    Robert Carlyle

    The Scotsman
    http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/feat...yle.5661538.jp

    September 18 2009

EXCERPT: This is what has taken Carlyle, in his 48th year, to Canada. Well, for the moment, anyway. He moved to Vancouver at the start of this year to film Stargate Universe, the latest spin-off from the franchise in which he plays lead scientist Dr Rush. In many ways it's a departure for Carlyle, away from his native Glasgow into the world of sci-fi and Canadian beach life. Following last year's 24: Redemption, a special addition to the series, and a previous stint playing Hitler in a mini-series for CBS, he is doing more television. The quality has increased, he points out, to the extent that there is no distinction anymore between film and TV, and he is in esteemed company with other Brits such as Tim Roth, Kevin McKidd and Hugh Laurie crossing the pond. Dr Rush, in any case, is as complex and Machievellian as any of the characters Carlyle has inhabited over the years. "Good, I like that," he says with a grin. "That'll do me."

He is missing Scotland ("the rainy days and the attitude"), as well as his wife, Anastasia, a make-up artist he met on the set of Cracker, and their three children, but he's not crying about it. "It was the right time for me to go," he says. "I had to do something different. I was getting bored with the problems in our industry. All those projects constantly falling apart. I couldn't be doing with it anymore." He starts talking about the anticipated film set in Edinburgh, The Meat Trade, which he is now convinced is never going to get off the ground. "I'll be 105 before it's f***ing made," he growls. "You've got Irvine Welsh writing the script, Antonia Bird directing, myself, Colin Firth, Samantha Morton acting… a lot of boxes ticked. So, you've got to think, what's the f***ing problem here?"

Looking forward to him and his character.

STARGATE UNIVERSE A multinational exploration team is marooned in a distant corner of the universe and trouble ensues. Robert Carlyle (“Trainspotting”) stars. SYFY, Oct. 2 at 9 p.m.

Not enough shows to your liking? It's not like the cable networks are taking the fall off. The creepy murder mystery "Epitafios" returns for a second season tonight at 10 on HBO Latino. BET's unscripted "First In" (Sept. 30 at 10 p.m.) follows a group of heroic paramedics. Syfy expands with "Stargate: Universe," starting Oct. 2 at 9 p.m.

Had it not been for "Stargate: Universe" and "V," I would have said that the science-fiction genre was dead in the water. Both "Universe" and "V" are exceptions to this rule. Firstly, "Universe" is a product of Syfy (even the SciFi Channel has shed its association with sci-fi as a genre, opting for a newer, kewler name that we had already been using for a decade). And secondly, "V" is an established brand that has been re-envisioned in a very "Battlestar Galactica" kind of way. But here's the clincher: Both of these shows could be considered mainstream.

Big Damn Ads (from consultant John Scalzi)

                EXCERPT:

My friend Doselle Young sent along this picture of a big-ass Stargate: Universe ad on the side of an LA hotel, and over the last couple of days I’ve seen double-sided ads for SG:U in both Rolling Stone and Wired. And I’m thinking, damn, I wish every project I worked on was this well advertised. On the other hand, not every project I do employs hundreds and costs millions of dollars to put together, or is going to be seen by millions of people on a weekly basis, so that may be a contributing factor here.

                  TV TONIGHT: SGU

                  EXCERPT:

First a disclaimer. Yes I like Sci Fi. No, I’m not versed on the various incarnations of Stargate, so don’t go looking for me to compare this latest spin-off with its predecessors. I will leave that for fans to do. Truth be told, I’m more Kurt Russell than Richard Dean Anderson…

Interesting. That gave me an idea how they are gonna open up the premiere and it is gonna leave many who haven't read any spoilers for the show and so on with a, "WTF!?" on there face.

There are no regrets. Thank you Brad Wright and everyone else for SGU,
and the amazing Stargate franchise in general.

FusedFilm - TV Review: Stargate Universe

Twelve years ago Showtime and MGM saw fit to bring Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin’s Stargate film to the small-screen as a procedural space adventure complete with action and humor that lasted 10 seasons with a spin-off series for 5 seasons. The Stargate franchise has been a bread and butter series for MGM and the Syfy channel so naturally when the idea for third installment came up everyone began to wonder what the long running series could come up with next.

Stargate Universe has brought a new and fresh look to the long running franchise and has used a relatively new style to carry it: dark sci-fi. Many will want to compare this new series, because of that style, to other successful shows like Battlestar Galactica. However, where Galactica seemed to be depressing and too pessimistic in its goal for deep passionate drama, SGU may have been able to achieve something better, that middle ground.

                        continues:

Stargate Universe is “dark scifi” - rumors say it’s even better than BSG (video)

The most anticipated new scifi series this season is Stargate Universe. The premier is a two-hour movie event on the SyFy channel on October 2 at 9 p.m. As Battlestar Galactica was my all-time favorite series, the fact that this one is touted as BSG-style, only better, has me wanting to see what all the fuss is about.

(rest is excerpts from other reviews, so review of reviews??

                          +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

                          http://www.tvaholic.com/

                          8 new shows worth watching

Stargate Universe (Syfy) - While we’re on the topic of new shows that left me wanting to see more immediately, we have this one. Fortunately, I was able to watch the second episode that will follow the week after the two-hour premiere episode. Unfortunately, that means I’ll have to wait until October 23rd to see the next new episode. It stars Robert Carlyle (24: Redemption, The Full Monty), David Blue (Ugly Betty, Moonlight), Alaina Huffman (Smallville, Painkiller Jane), and Ming-Na (Vanished, ER).
                          ....

I used to watch Stargate SG-1 back when it started on Showtime, but lost track of it as it moved to its new home on the Sci Fi Channel. I’ve never really got into Stargate Atlantis, as it always came off too much on the silly/cheesy side for me. So, when I saw the promos for this new incarnation of the series, I was hopeful, cause it looked to be a bit more on the serious side. Not that there isn’t any humor, cause there is. But, after watching the first three hours of the series, I can say that this is the first Stargate series on Syfy that I actually plan on watching.

There are also interesting characters like Carlyle’s Dr. Rush. If you watched Battlestar Galactica, he is a little like Dr. Baltar, except it is less clear what or why he might do something.

Stargate Universe Set to Rock the World!

WormholeRiders is pleased, proud, and thrilled for the opportunity to review Stargate Universe for SyFy. This review is the first of three (3) SGU reviews WormholeRiders will publish, with two more Stargate Universe reviews, from our senior editors RadioStar and Play It Grand. The next SGU review will be posted on or before Monday, September 28. Our third review will be published right before the Stargate Universe premiere on October 2 on SyFy.

Importantly, this reporter’s review will be from two distinct perspectives, one objective, and one of a rather subjective nature.

Gateworld: Darren and David's First Impressions

A few people have asked us for our full review of Stargate Universe, seeing as how the press kit arrived a few days ago (story). While we work on the complete review, we thought we should share some informal first impressions of the new series right away.

Interview with Alaina Huffman at Cinemapsy

                                http://www.cinemaspy.com/article.php?id=3199

                                EXCERPT:

CinemaSpy: You've been shooting for a few months, what are your impressions. Are you feeling good about what's going on?

Alaina Huffman: We have the best producers. They are right there on the same lot as us, which is more than you can say for a lot of shows, they come by the stage all the time, and they're always telling us, "We saw the latest cut and your performance was great and the scripts are great and the show is coming along." It's wonderful to hear that. I think all of us feel really blessed to be here. The scripts that are coming out keep getting better and better and the story lines and characters are really rounding out and filling out.

CinemaSpy: What aspirations do you have for the series?

Alaina Huffman: I hope we go a few years. That's always nice, to have a job for a few years. I think we're a little spoiled. I don't know anybody else who can go to Comic -Con with a first show that doesn't air for months and pack 5,000 people in a room. It's amazing, and Brad [Wright] and Robert [Cooper], I'm so impressed with them I thought they were phenomenal in handling the panel.
