    One last thing...
New Stargate villain Robert Carlyle would do Porno, but he'd never go commando in the desert, discovers Daniel Martin

    EXCERPT:
Hello Robert. Why on earth did you sign up for Stargate Universe?
I did two films, one called I Know You Know and one called Summer, which I thought were some of the most beautiful things I'd been involved in. And they were both seen by about 12 people. I just thought, "**** it, I'm not doing this any more." (1)

That doesn't really answer the question, Robert …
At first Stargate wasn't an option, but I took the call. The first thing I said was, "Are you sure you've got the right guy here?" But they said, "We're looking for someone who can make dislikable things likable." Well, I'm your man!

'Stargate: Universe' – Air, Part 3
There's no aliens, only the harsh reality of long-term survival

    EXCERPT:
Darker, grittier and with more raw and un-tempered human reactions, "Universe" features a group of human refugees travelling towards Earth. Their ship is ancient and falling to pieces and what they face is more frightening that hordes of aliens or fleets of villains – their biggest challenge is the logistics of long term survival.

Stargate Universe: Starting to get sick of imminent death

Will you please just get on with it already?

We get it. They’re in space. It’s dark. It’s a big freaking void.

But I’m so sick of the “Stargate Universe” crew facing imminent death at every foreseeable turn.

Can we start watching the show now? Please?

We’re three weeks and four episodes in, and they’re already recording the “Dear Home, If we die out there…” messages. They didn’t get to that until the end of the first season of “Atlantis.” Although we knew they would go there, because Brad Wright and company stopped writing new show ideas sometime around 2001.

TV Glut is killing your favorite shows

Fox's Fringe is suffering in the ratings for its second season. But is that because of the show itself, or does it have more to do with the night it's broadcast on?
          ………………..

Thursday isn't the only night this is happening; Friday sees Stargate Universe air at the same time as Dollhouse, with the younger-skewing, but still geek-friendly Star Wars: The Clone Wars showing on Cartoon Network. So what's the answer? Moving shows around, timeslot-wise? Investing in more DVRs or watching them online? Or dropping shows because nobody can watch everything...?

Stargate Universe is starting to remind me of Firefly

EXCERPT: Four episodes into Stargate Universe, and I'm starting to get hooked. I like that this week's episode, "Darkness," took place mainly on the ancient ship Destiny, which looks ultra-cool flying through space. The whole thing has a Firefly feel to it.

I'm also starting to get a better feel for the storyline and characters, thanks in part to their little bio recordings engineered by Eli. Most of the crew are in their 20s or 30s, and most would rather be anywhere but there.

Only Compare 'Stargate: Universe' To Good Shows
PLUS: Actors of the new Syfy series say they're excited to be a part of an ensemble cast

EXCERPT: So yep, this is simply the two questions that I got in for Airlock Alpha, and if you look closely at the beginning of the video, you can see me getting the crap scared out of me when the exhaust pressure is released from the spinning Stargate. Who knows, maybe if we can get the video fixed a little better, it might end up on "America's Funniest Home Videos," although it was filmed in Canada, so hopefully the have an equivalent of the show there.

All Alone In The Night: Stargate Universe

Aboard a spaceship as vast and beautiful as it is broken, a Stargate explodes into life. A young man collapses through it, instantly aware, instantly combat ready, instantly terrified. Behind him, a trickle of humanity becomes a flood as civilians, soldiers and supplies are hurled through the gate out into the ship. There’s nothing orderly about their arrival, nothing civilised. These people are frightened, on the run and completely out of their depth. These are our heroes, a group of men and women completely unprepared for the situation they’re in and their relationships are sketched in this opening scene with real elegance. Eli Wallace is captivated by everything around him whilst Camille Wray looks on in shock, unsure of how she fits in this new environment. Behind them, Tamara Johansen sticks to her training, helping tend the wounds she can whilst Chloe Armstrong lets her badly wounded father lean on her even as she pushes against him. Behind them, Ron Greer keeps people moving, keeps them on their feet. At the other end of the ragged column, Matthew Scott, the first man through, does the same. Above them, Doctor Nicholas Rush looks down on the shocked, frightened group with something between satisfation and resignation. He isn’t frightened at all.

            continues:

              SGU Darkness reviewed

EXCERPT: As per my new system I have given this review the title “Out of the frying pan, into the Sun“
Firstly just let me say Yay! Peter DeLuise and leave it at that
              Now, onto everything else…
Its my feeling that, as good and as different as the pacing of SGU is, its also going to be the biggest hurdle for fans to contend with, personally I like it but I still have to remind myself of that and I have to wonder what this episode would be like viewed through the eyes of somebody who doesn’t remind themselves of that.

Stargate Universe: Meet the new SG crew

The newest Stargate series opens with a scene and soundtrack more reminiscent of the beloved Battlestar Galactica redo than any previous SG offering. We see a large ship traveling alone through space. Cut to the interior, where moody music accompanies our journey down dark, empty corridors to... a gateroom.
(Whew. Really thought the DVR had captured an old BSG there, instead of the requested SGU.)

It's time for Darkness, as Stargate Universe continues to impress...

The wonderful visual style just gets better too, with a close pass around a gas giant providing an incredible visual stimulus for both the characters and the viewers at home. The cliffhanger, too, provides an excellent final image and an impressive cliff to hang from for a week.

Again, I am highly impressed with this week's instalment, and am impatiently awaiting the arrival of episode five, which should, hopefully, prove to be as remarkable as this week's, if not more so.

                  Stargate Universe: Darkness

I’m still not sure how I feel about the show overall. I sort of want to get to know the characters better, but I’m beginning to feel like the crisis-of-the-week may start to wear thin after a while. Last week it was no air. This week it is no power. Next week looks like no power plus collision course with a star (which we know won’t happen, so it is just a question of how they get out of it). I think the week after that is titled ‘Water,’ so you can guess what the crisis is going to be. Maybe I’m just having a hard time adjusting from “adventure show” to “survival show.” In general, I’m completely fine with the survival theme, I’m just not sure it is working for me in the Stargate ‘verse. Yet. I probably just need more time for the characters to grow on me. I’m certainly not ready to stop watching.

Did Stargate Universe's Women Get Lost In The Wrong Universe?

The men of Stargate Universe have been busy punching, exploring and saving lives using complicated math. Meanwhile the womenfolk have cried, drank, got naked, and been used up sexually. Is SGU getting a little sexist? Fans certainly think so.

Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan pointed out this weekend all the unhappy SGU fans at Television Without Pity saying that SGU is getting fairly sexist with their female characters...

The message board is flooded with negative opinions about the practically mute female cast aboard the Destiny. Ming-Na's much-hyped openly lesbian character has all but said three words along with equally quiet T.J., while the hapless Senator's daughter wanders about the ship never far from the crook of a protective man's arm, even though she totes doesn't need it.

To be honest I agree and disagree. The men themselves, while getting a lot more screen time are horribly stereotyped. There's the quiet stern one, the nerd, the hot adventurous white guy, angry black guy, and the jock. Do we really want the women getting more screen time, if they will only be subjected to this type of stereotyping?

The actor talks about the SyFy Channel series that he's on now, MOONLIGHT and UGLY BETTY (which he used to be on)

iF: Are you prepared to spend the next five years of your life doing STARGATE UNIVERSE?

BLUE: If the fans will have us, I’d absolutely love to. I mean, it’s unfortunate that I have such a wonderful life [laughs]. The UGLY BETTY cast and crew were amazing, and then I walked into this situation, where they’re just as amazing. We all get along off-set too. When I’m doing a scene with Robert Carlyle, the world melts away and we are these characters and it’s wonderful. And then to have the creative team behind you, who puts up with my pestering as a fan of sci-fi and as a fan of the shows. I go, "You know, I don’t know how that would work, because if the Stargate does this, and then if I’m dialing like that …" And they’re open to it. They want to make this show as good as anything else.

Lou Diamond Phillips: Well actually, yeah, that's always a motivating factor especially when you have four daughters, you know. Every day they continue to grow, its kind of crazy. But not only had the franchise been so successful in the past, it really was a well oiled machine and hoping that they would carry on the torch and create another success. Before I even read the script, knowing that Robert Carlyle was already attached, I mean just really made a huge difference to me. I automatically knew that -- he's a man of such taste and such talent that if he liked it, then I was probably going to find something to like in it as well. My character, Col. Telford, is not on the page a lot in some of the earlier episodes, but it was conversations with Brad Wright and Robert Cooper [the creators] that let me know that Telford certainly had a future on the show and he would have an impact on the inter-personal dynamics on the characters. So I took a bit of a leap of faith, found out my old buddy Ming-Na
was going to be in it, and just realized that they really were looking to do a totally re-imagined, rebirth of of the Stargate franchise.

                            Stargate: The Next Generation

                            P 30-31

Excerpt: Universe might veer away from its predecessors, but the producers have not forgotten their devoted fans. “very familiar faces are coming back,” Wright promises, including the beloved Gen. Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson).

There are no apologies, however, for the new shows’ more intense character interaction. “If people are looking for a sci-fi procedural, this isn’t it,” Wright says. “We’re focusing on characters and relationships under duress. If some don’t want to see that, that’s fine. I hope there are enough hpeople who are liking what we’re doing.”

TV Squad: Set Visit: Stargate Universe ups ante for veteran franchise

EXCERPT: Wright led the tour himself, guiding the assembled media through the extremely detailed and atmospheric set. He said acquiring the budget necessary to build what would become the Destiny (the first space vessel known to house a star-cruising Stargate) was his and Cooper's first priority.

"We wanted to focus on one production and give all of our attention and resources to it," Wright said. "Before we even pitched the concept to MGM, we made sure they would give us the resources to do what we wanted to accomplish."

The show Wright and Cooper envisioned would be bigger, more ambitious and more challenging than any previous Stargate production. The cast would be bigger and would include veteran stars of film and television, including Robert Carlyle, Ming Na and Lou Diamond Phillips. And the production values would be a step beyond the other Stargate shows shot at Bridge Studios.

Is Stargate Universe Sexist? The Cast Says 'No'
                                Oct 21 2009

EXCERPTurprisingly though, detractors of the show have managed to level some criticisms that, regardless of their validity, have begun to resonate through the blogosphere. Most prominently is the view that Stargate Universe suffers from sexism where its female characters are concerned. According to some people, Stargate Universe has a shortage of interesting characters, particularly of the female gender.

I don’t know what aspect of this criticism bothers me more, the fact that it is pretty baseless, Stargate’s ladies are some tough cookies in my book, or the fact that the criticism has arisen from the kvetching on forums like TWOP and been flipped into the public consciousness by entertainment columnists whose own negative opinions on Stargate Universe have turned out to be sorely outnumbered.
