Stargate Universe: What Worked, What Didn't

      · And right there, that first moment beautifully demonstrates my biggest problem with the series. SGU both succeeds and fails at trying to gritty up Stargate. Its team of producers, crew and writers are the best of the best today, when it comes to creating a light-hearted series that embraces the fun of space travel. Stargate shied away from the ugly and real, such as permanent death and complicated characters. Heck, these creators even excelled at making a Stargate CSI episode, one of my personal favs. But even though the people who make the Gate are exceedingly clever, taking on darkness seemed to fall a bit out of their reach from time to time with this new series. And since it's such a dirty new pill we have to swallow, the flaws stick out. Especially on the heels of one of the more successful dark space operas, BSG. There were a few "just doesn't fit right" moments, like that ominous Carlyle moment. And while they didn't make me dislike the series, his general crazy then quiet, crazy then crazier demeanor through out rubbed me the wrong way as a viewer.

      · All in all, it's a great step forward for Gaters everywhere. It was mostly captivating, interesting and well done. There are a few annoying wrinkles but what pilot doesn't have those? This was an important step that the Stargate franchise needed to take, and it seems like they are handling it with care without losing the clever parts from the original that we loved. Stargate always asked for a lot of give with the audience, by saying things like, "Hey it's a magical cave alright?" so things like the magic stones and the forcefields that leak in some areas but not others, come with the territory. We're ready for the darker SGU, and I'm more than happy to let this team guide us through it. Especially since they seem to be as much in the dark as we are. We'll get through it together.

Hot on the heels of the explosive SGU premiere, INNERSPACE took off with a special, one-hour episode featuring SGU star, Canadian actor Louis Ferreira. Not so sure it was worth the wait. It took the thrid time watching before I began liking any of it. It doesn;t have the personality of the previous two Star Gate shows. I hope the rest are better then the first. It was more like watching Battle Star Galactica, which wasn't worth the film.

              From E Online:

Marina in Brooklyn, N.Y.: I loved Stargate Universe! Do you have any info on what's to come?
Sadly, after the blockbuster premiere, we hear that the next installment is fairly weak on plot and visibly less expensive than the pilot. That's not to say that Stargate Universe is not going to be a great addition to the Syfy lineup long-term, but there's a minor dip in the road.

Four Sci-Fi Shows (And One Film) That Stargate:Universe Is Borrowing From

Obviously, SyFy's latest series Stargate:Universe owes its existence to a the success of the original Stargate film, a pair of TV spin-offs (SG-1 and Atlantis) and a couple of direct-to-DVD films (The Ark of Truth and Continuum). Maybe not so much the animated series (Stargate Infinity). But after watching the double-episode Universe pilot, it quickly became apparent that those weren't all the shows the creators were consciously or subconsciously riffing. Here's a quick rundown of some other obvious and not-so-obvious sci-fi touchstones found in the series premiere…

Is this Stargate for people who don't like Stargate – or Stargate for people who do?

EXCERPT: And so we'll see a move away from the weekly adventure format towards slower, multi-series arcs, with characters who are apparently less black and white: flawed, complicated and more human than hero. It also sports Robert Carlyle – the latest British actor running away, he claims, from the ailing British film industry – as some kind of tortured scientist. Whether Carlyle, a brilliant character actor with a bundle of heavy dramas under his belt, can throw himself into the genre wholeheartedly remains to be seen. He certainly looked bored and grumpy at the comic con panel I went to.

Exclusive: Robert Carlyle on Stargate Universe

EXCERPT: CinemaSpy: Now, being that he is that much of lone wolf, do you think that there is a danger that the audience may have a difficult time empathizing with him?

Robert Carlyle: Do you know, to be honest, I think the answer is probably yes. I think it probably will. But that is again one of the reasons I took the role. I love that. I don't like it if it's easy for me. I don't like it if it's made easy for the audience to like or dislike a character. You always want to pin characters on some kind of believability. And this man is box of tricks; you're never quite sure which way he's going to go.

                        SGU Pilot Review

EXCERPT: The makers of Universe are unmistakable Battlestar fans. The show has many tributes to the Cylon show, from the cinematic style and the use of terms like "FTL" drives. Even Robert Carlyle's villain character is clearly Gaius Baltar-like. For anyone bummed that there's been no Battlestar in a while, Universe can easily be your fix. In the pilot episode, you're introduced to many characters with very divergent motives, some of which are less than noble, and this brings up intrigue to be addressed in later episodes (you're also introduced to Happy Gilmore villain Christopher "Shooter McGavin" McDonald, nice).

EXCERPT: The Toronto Star spoke with Carlyle on the phone from Vancouver, where the show is filming.
Q: You seem to have an affinity for portraying intense characters. Is that what attracted you to Dr. Rush?
A: I do get drawn to these outside-the-box type characters. People that don't really fit in, that have their own kind of world going on in their head the whole time. I enjoy characters like that, I enjoy playing people like that and Rush is certainly like that. A very difficult character to like. A challenge for the audience to even like this guy ... I love that.

Q: SGU differs from the previous Stargate series; it deals more with some deep, personal moral issues. Do you think it will appeal to the same fans?
A: There are parallels. You have to give a nod to SG-1 and Atlantis, because they really created this whole world and they've done some incredible stuff along the way. We are very conscious of not treading on that. It's still Stargate. It's still got the Stargate theme and they still go off to alien worlds. It's just done in a more life-or-death type of way, literally for them.

EXCERPT: Ferreira is impressed with the decision of co-creators Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper to switch things up with the new show.

"I was a fan of SG-1, and I was a fan of the idea that they wanted to change the show, or evolve it, maybe would be the right word. It's grittier and edgier. There is no reason for them to change a format that works, so it's very ballsy, for lack of a better word, for them to go in a different direction and get someone like Robert Carlyle to be the lead. I was very impressed with that execution."

Pat Stacey finds that, in times of hardship, thrilling TV is crucial (Sky 1)

EXCERPT: Some people in America are labelling Stargate Universe "Stargate for people who don't like Stargate". Me, I loved the original series, Stargate SG-1, as well as the 1994 film on which it was based, though I never got into the spin-off, Stargate Atlantis.
Don't know about Stargate Universe yet; this two-hour, double-episode opener, shown just four days after its screening in the US, was a long slog at times. I do know, however, what it reminds me of: Lost in Space.
Not Lost set in space, even if the first hour, with its multitude of characters and frequent flashbacks (can't any new US series tell a story in a straight line any more?) did bear resemblances to JJ Abrams' interminable puzzle.
No, I mean the actual Lost in Space: the 1960s series from my childhood that basically took the Swiss Family Robinson and marooned them on a strange planet. The Robinsons' lives were continually imperilled by the untrustworthy Dr Zachary Smith, who started the series as an out-and-out bad guy but quickly mutated into a cowardly comic-relief character.

Escape through the stargate opens up a new universe of peril

One of the problems with Stargate Atlantis from the very beginning was its setting: for humanity's daring and dangerous first mission to an unknown galaxy, the expedition members are set up in the Ancients' version of Grand Hotel. There they encounter an extremely deadly nemesis race which is, however, asleep (at first), and most of the tension related to the Wraith came from piecemeal encounters and the background fear that eventually they'll all get together and become an actual threat to Atlantis.
