Spacecraft must move by throwing reaction mass (in the case of the ion drive, streams of particles, and solar sails and the like don't require the reaction mass to be stored on the spacecraft itself) in the direction opposite to the one they want to move in, and since momentum is conserved, the spacecraft experiences an equal and opposite impulse.

One of the reasons I love the idea of the 'space elevator' is because it could allow you to launch craft with a minimum of onboard fuel. Essentially, the tether of the elevator could be used to 'sling-shot' craft from the Earth, and the onboard systems of the craft could simply give it direction without using so much fuel to gain speed. Of course there is still angular momentum to deal with depending on the direction your going in, but still it is better than having to go from a relative stand still. Having more fuel to use, gives you more options. Of course the beauty of Ion drives is that you don't have to carry a lot of chemical fuel around. Even so, a space elevator allows you to construct a larger ship in orbit than we could ever launch from the Earth itself. The elevator would greatly reduce the costs to build large craft that currently are prohibited because of the limitations of rocketry. The elevator is the ultimate re-usable mechanism for going back and forth to space without the extreme costs inherent to rocketry. Of course if we could ever come up with a decent anti-gravity technology it might not be necessary. Until then...

Hello friends..!

I just wanted to tell you all that I may not be on for a while. I'm getting ready to do a major move across the country. I'm leaving North Carolina and moving to Missouri. I don't know how long it will be before I can be regularly back online, so I just wanted to let everyone know why I'll be missing. I've been busy lately also, which is why I haven't been on lately. As soon as I can, I'll be a regular back here folks..! I just have to get settled in Missouri first before I can. That means find a new job, and a new place to live. If anyone is wondering, the main reason I'm moving is to be near my family. I basically got tired of living by myself in this town. Blood calls to blood as they say...

Hello, it's so sad that this thread has died, I really liked it, but staying with the universe and dimensions stuff has anyone seen or heard of the 10 dimension idea, from what I understand, the 11 thing is they are inter woven. While this 10 dimension idea they have them staked one atop another. So say, if you wanted to move from one timeline to another, you could fold yourself, 3rd dimension being, thru the 7th dimension and move to a timeline where you are a billionaire, sort of like that quintonuim mirror thingy. Also anyone have any ideas about how someone would be able to move up thru the dimensions to higher plane of existence. For example, moving up to the 7th dimension and be able to move to different timelines. Would it even be possible for us normal humans to do that? Also are ascended ancients still stuck in the 3rd dimension or are they also higher dimensional beings?

Thanks tagger..! When I get a regular net access again, I'll try and revive this thread. Right now, I'm sort of in limbo having just moved to a new state. Can somebody tell me in which episode they spoke about the planet's SGC codename system? P3x111, P3X444 etc. P = planet, S = system, M = moon? If I remember well the supercomputers counted the space coordinates of stargates again from the Abydos database and they used a mathematical program. Can somebody help me, where can I find references? I thought at first that it was in Enemy within or The Nox, but I found nothing useful.

First of all hello to everyone, this is the first time i enter this forum and i like it. Now, let's get to the point. Have you ever wondered how fast a Daedalus class cruiser really is? Well, i've calculated its cruising speed knowing that it takes it three weeks to reach Pegasus (I didn't counted the use of a ZPM or other advanced power source; just the good ol' hyperdrive that the Asgard gaved to us in season 8). Gen. Landry said that the distance between Pegasus and Earth is 3 million light years ( i don't remember exactly in which episode). So, using the simple formula speed=distance/time => a Daedalus class cruiser has a cruising speed of 56 114 256 300 000 000 km/h, translated in light years => it can travel at approximately 5931 times the speed of light. Of course, it took me a while to calculate it, but i assure you it's accurate. And to be even more accurate, it's actually 5931.4082604519214804111787244357 faster than the speed of light. Of course, that is if it would travel in our universe, which isn't the case. I don't know how things are going in subspace.

I've finally settled in here in Missouri, about an hour south of St. Louis. I've finally got my internet access back, and hopefully, I can get back in the swing of things as I once did. For anyone reading this, particularly new members to this subforum, I would like to suggest that you check this thread out before making a new thread. There are many topics that have been covered repeatedly in many threads which are essentially duplicates. Also, the 'Search' function is a VERY great tool to use. If you find a thread that you believe deserves to be added to the list already in place, then please leave a post here, or send me a PM to let me know, and I'll try to add it to the list.

I'm going to try and start back working on this thread again, seeing as I've been away for quite some time and unable to do so. I think the new member might find many of the Threads already listed here informative and entertaining, rather than creating new threads which uneccesarily cover the same topics. As members who have been here a while can tell you, there have been some rather 'epic' thread discussions with great detail and much involved discussion on many topics. Some of these threads include pictures and drawings to help make a point, as well as some complicated explanations to stimulate the brain cells.

Again, any ideas are welcome.

It is because that even with subspace communications, it takes a long time for a signal to travel that far (roughly 3 million light years). The Ancients DID have communications tech that could work at those sort of distances in real time, but they certainly weren't the normal 'dial' the phone type thing. Those little 'telepathic' stone things were one example of this. There would probably be other examples, but we haven't seen any that I know of.

oh, but what about background radiation, prety sure subspace is filled with it, would that have anyhting to do with it?
