Q. Stargate SG-1 just concluded its series of ten amazing seasons, and although you only appeared in two of its episodes, they were quite pivotal and replay often on the Sci Fi Channel. Are you still often recognized for that role?

SF: "Not really. I tend to look quite different in every role I play and that was a long time ago. People don’t recognize me from that. They actually recognize me more for some ridiculous set of commercials I did 3-4 years ago! I also have curly hair in real life and no one recognizes me from TV and Film until I open my mouth."

Bruce Dawson (who played the Captain in the Stargate Atlantis episode "Aurora") plays Flash Gordon's father in the pilot of FLASH GORDON (which is also available for sale on DVD at Circuit City (or Best Buy) already!).

Unfortunately IMDB is a bit behind on guest cast, but since the show is made in Vancouver and if you like it, you might spot SG cast on it. Otherwise, tape and speedsearch

Just a quick note. Ads for Michael Shanks' MEGASNAKE flick (AUgust 25th) have begun airing. They're very short, so far. I thought I heard MS scream, but can't be sure. It went by too fast.

Stan Brooks gets into series

Once Upon a Time Productions will produce Telepic producer, company switching gears

Prolific telepic producer Stan Brooks is getting into the series biz.
Brooks and his Once Upon a Time Prods. banner have set up several scripted skeins.

Brooks, whose AMC mini "Broken Trail" is up for a leading 16 Emmy noms this year, said he's dabbled with the idea of series before but had previously been too focused on longform to make a serious push into the form. Realities of the telepic biz, as well as a stepped-up role for head of production Damian Ganczewski, convinced him it was time to make his move.

"You don't have to be a genius to know that the TV movie business is a roller coaster, and we're at the lowest point of the ride," Brooks said.

One project is a half-hour take on the Del Shores feature film "Sordid Lives" at Logo. Delta Burke, Olivia Newton-John, Beau Bridges and Leslie Jordan are in talks to reprise their roles from the pic for TV.

"Lives" is the story of a small trailer park in Texas and the women who live there. "It's 'Steel Magnolias' from the wickedest gay perspective," Brooks said.

While casting is not yet locked, "Del has spoken to all of the (film's stars), and they all want to do the series," he said.

Tenpercentery then came to Brooks with the idea of producing "Sordid Lives" as a series, with Shores writing all 13 episodes and exec producing with Brooks.

"It needed creative financing and production models, and we were able to come up with a plan that would let it be very cost-effective for Logo and put as much money on the screen as possible," Brooks said.

Toward that end, Brooks said Shores has written all the episodes of season one in advance, allowing the skein to be produced like a miniseries.

I’m hoping this is the right place for this news! I came across a new book, Sci-Fi Baby Names by Robert Schnakenberg, and guess whose names made its 500 Out-of-this-World Baby Names list!

Just sayin’, thought it was a hoot to see our fave characters’ names out there to name your progeny after! The book has many well know references (BSG, Farscape, Star Wars, etc) and some lesser known (Green Slime, Liquid Sky, Starcrash, etc). It’s a fun book with obviously goofy names as well as some regular and nicely exotic ones. Too bad for Jack, John, Elizabeth, Daniel and Teal’c. All but Teal’c were listed but not regarding Stargate. But hey, they're the most popular names on the planet anyway!

Vancouver's Jason Bryden attacks show biz on all fronts, doing live comedy and TV while writing for stage and screen.

Merv Griffin's recent obit in Time magazine described him as someone who "perfected an authentic, unironic, people-friendly manner that was seemingly impervious to the winds of change". If you think that marks him as the last of a breed, you've obviously never seen It's Good to Know People, a regular live comedy show at Hennessey Dining Lounge on West Broadway. It's so sincere, it's positively alternative.

Hosted by Jason Bryden as Bev PoCock and David Milchard as Chris Wes–"two insipid, broken, suburban, emasculated dudes", according to Bryden–the evening is like a live tribute to those PM Magazine–style shows that were all the rage in the 1980s. Only these feel-good MCs are in touch with their feminine side and believe men should be able to cuddle the way women do.

"It's kinda like Larry Sanders with a banal, people-positive bent to it," Bryden says in conversation with the Georgia Straight. "An eerie, earnest look into a local cable talk show."

Milchard and Bryden–who was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award last year for his work on IGTKP–developed the headband-sporting, pastel-clad, constantly grinning characters to see if they could do comedy without poking fun at anyone. Highlights include sing-alongs to Bev and Chris's spookily cheery folk tunes and, of course, the annual testicular-exam Easter show, when audience members get two chocolate eggs to practise on. The 35-year-old actor is a man on the move, doing just about everything show business has to offer. While racking up acting credits in TV series ranging from Terminal City to Battlestar Galactica and Stargate SG-1, Bryden has authored a play titled The Dissemblers, a comedy about our city's condo-and-Chardonnay pretences, to be produced next May by Vancouver's Touchstone Theatre and to feature Sasa Brown, Medina Hahn, and Michael Rinaldi. That's on top of an already-optioned screenplay called The History of Computers and a development deal with the Comedy Network. He's even found time to put together a novel, after vowing to write a page a day for a year.
