Grey Gardens

(Movie -- HBO, Sat. April 18, 8 p.m.)

How could a ravishing young debutante and her life-of-every-party mother -- relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, no less -- become crazy cat ladies, occupying a dilapidated 28-room East Hampton mansion? "Grey Gardens," an HBO movie inspired by the eponymous documentary shot in 1973, doesn't fully answer that question -- indeed, there's a rather sizable hole in the story -- but nevertheless has a fabulous time contemplating it, showcasing marvelous performances by Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. It's a must-see for those fascinated by the lore of the U.S.' modern Camelot, as well as another sure to be lavishly adorned movie for the pay channel.

Director-producer Michael Sucsy (who also co-wrote with Patricia Rozema) is such a devotee of the original documentary that he spends chunks of the movie grainily recreating scenes from it, while turning the filmmakers (Arye Gross, Justin Louis) into minor characters ...

On the island continent of Mirabilis, in a faraway time, the most coveted element is bloodsteel, a sorcery grade ore that imparts potent magical abilities to anyone who is able to draw it from the earth. The desire for untold wealth and power has drawn much of Mirabilis' vast and disparate populace-humans, elves, dwarves and goblins-to the old port mining town of Black Roc Keep. It has also enticed the evil Dragon Eye (Mark Gibbon) and his ruthless cadre of Brood soldiers, who'll stop at nothing to possess the ore for the purpose of total world domination. Enlisted to save Mirabilis from this lethal insurgency is the venerable sorcerer elf Tesselink (Christopher Lloyd), who has been given a vital directive by the Oracle of the land. He must find the legendary magical Crucible, which is the source of bloodsteel.



To execute this perilous quest, Tesselink gathers an unlikely band of freedom fighters: two humans, Serragoth (David James Elliott), the sworn enemy of the Brood, and Adric (Christopher Jacot), a charming con-man; the imposing goblin Ber-Lak (Dru Viergever); and lastly, the beautiful and fearless warrior elf, Perfidia (Natassia Malthe). Together, this motley, but supremely talented, Knights of Bloodsteel, embark on their dangerous mission. They must fight against the Brood - the dreaded assassins and soldiers of Dragon Eye who are led by the deadly goblin Azenhawke (Gardiner Millar) and his ruthless lieutenant Swope (Peter Bryant). And if that is not enough, Dragon Eye has also unleashed lethal dragons and other horrendous creatures to find the source of the bloodsteel and to obliterate anything that stands in his way.



The future of Mirabilis is in the hands of four brave knights and their courage is tested in ways they could never have imagined.

Knights of Bloodsteel is produced by Reunion Pictures (Lisa Richardson, Matthew O'Connor, Tom Rowe) with RHI Entertainment, (Robert Halmi, Sr. and Robert Halmi, Jr.) distributing the project internationally. Emmy-nominated Sam Egan (Sanctuary, Jeremiah, The Outer Limits) wrote the script.

What a difference 10 months makes.

Last spring, Toronto decorator Paul Semkuley was working full-time for Gluckstein Design, one of the country's most prominent interior design firms.

As 2009 kicked off, however, the global economy was in free fall, homes in Toronto were no longer the objects of bidding wars and Semkuley, who had been employed by Gluckstein for more than two years, was suddenly out of a job.

"It was a total surprise when I was laid off," says the 42-year-old, who got his pink slip in January.

But Semkuley and others in his beleaguered business aren't crying over their colour chips. Rather, they're getting busy redesigning their careers.

... This kind of reciprocal deal-making is characteristic of the new design landscape, where every industry advantage is exploited. In the case of Wendy Russell of Vancouver, yet another comes into play: name recognition.

An occasional actor (Robson Arms, Stargate SG-1) and the host of She's Crafty, a TV show on the Fine Living Network, Russell has acquired a devoted following in the crafting world through her television work and frequent appearances at design fairs, including this weekend's Metro Home Show (http://www.metrohomeshow.com) in Toronto.

But if there is an industry that is even less predictable than design these days, it's the media. So while Russell hopes to build on the success of her TV show, whose 23-episode run concludes this spring, she is also building a flourishing backup career as a home stager and organizing expert under the name Style Cat, Inc.

"I did the set designs for my show, so it was a logical progression into home staging and a totally fun one," she says, adding that, like Semkuley, she charges an initial flat fee ($150 for two hours) and then proceeds from there.

Because the real-estate market in Vancouver is so soft right now, however, "a lot of home stagers - including me - had to move into organizing or restyling because a lot of homes aren't being listed."

That was fine with her, as she loves nothing more than imposing order on a dishevelled room, office or closet, says Russell, who underwent training with Professional Organizers in Canada (http://www.organizersincanada.com) to add to her cred.

"You can really make an impact on a person's life," she says. "There's a lot of shame involved with bringing someone in to organize your home, but the POC is trying to change that. You bring a maid or a nanny in to help you, so why not a professional organizer?"
