I'd have to go with the shield. It doesn't seem as likely to over heat.Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering-Yoda

Church: Nope, no matter how bad they seem, they can't be any better, and they can't be any worse, because that's the way things f***ing are, and you better get used to it Nancy. Quit-yer-b****ing.

Maybe a special arrangement that doesn't reintegrate the matter stream at the event horizon, but instead stores it to a buffer and scans it. If aliens, darts, bombs etc. come through, it deletes the pattern, if SGC/Atlantis personell come through, it reintegrates them at the event horizon.

Originally posted by NaonakDefinitely the shield from Atlantis' gate. It's an energy field, so will pretty much stop anything (unless it's one of those weird speed things, like some Goa'uld shields). It looks pretty strong too.
The iris has been in trouble loads:- It got destroyed by the black hole ('A Matter of Time'), although a black hole would probably screw with a shield too
- Nearly got destroyed by Sokar's particle weapon ('Serpent's Song')
- Radiation can leak through ('Chain Reaction')
The particle weapon would have no effect on a forcefield, and radiation can't leak through.

I bet that wouldn't have been possbible with an iris
Splat much?
As for power concerns, the shield could probably draw power directly off the gate.
